General strategy question. My character is pretty good at killin' stuff, less good at lore checks.

I'm thinking that I should focus on killing as many monsters as possible. That way it keeps Arkham clearer for you guys to move around, plus lets me start building up monster trophies - I understand that these are useful for something somehow.

Make sense? First game so this might just be a strategy that sounds good but will be awful.

Yeah, killing monsters is definitely McGlen's role. He has terrible luck, low Sanity, and starts with no clue tokens so he is not that good at venturing into OWs.

If you keep the monster limit in check, that would be great! Monster trophies can be spent at several locations to receive rewards such as Blessings and becoming Deputized.

Hmmm, hang out at STL to use my spiffy new membership, or go off to grab a 6th clue token? Any suggestions?

Also that is one nasty environment... thankfully it doesn't do much this early in the game.

It's your choice really, but I think that you could try an Inner Sanctum encounter for this turn... you might get some neat stuff!

How do we make this environment problem go away?

Just wait for another environment mythos

Fuck this place, R'lyeh is a dump.

    Move Lore/Luck to 4/0

    Cast Find Gate. Sanity -1.
Hell, yeah. Best Wizard. 3 Successes.

So I pop back out in the Unnameable. Can't even close the gate, don't have enough skills.
I don't have to try and murder the witch, but can I?

Okay now that's sorted, can we come up with some way to keep @Daemonis on a shorter leash?

  • ChrysisChrysis Registered User regular
Actually, I potentially can close the gate. With voice of ra, my 1 clue token and Mandys reroll the wiki says 58% chance of success. Worth it?

    Sure, go for it!

    ARKHAM ENCOUNERS:
The Order of the Silver Twilight casts a banishment spell in their monthly ceremony. Mandy Thompson has a chance to take a part. Spend 1 Sanity to make a Luck (-1) check. If you pass, claim any one monster on the board as a trophy. If you fail, nothing happens. @PsychoLarry1 to make the check

Monterey Jack has to pass a Fight (-1) check to intimidate a policeman or he rousts you from the park. Move to the street. @mi-go hunter to make the check

Michael McGlen may pay $3 fee to gain access to the private library. If you refuse, move to the street. If you pay, make a Luck (-1) check. If you pass, you learn an ancient spell from a dusty ledger. Draw 1 Spell. If you fail, you doze off and enter The Dreamlands. Have an encounter there, then immediately return here. @Tayrun to decide if he want to pay or not

It was not a good idea for Harvey Walters to walk in Woods. A gate and a monster appear there! It's a gate to Yuggoth guarded by Cultist. Harvey is drawn to Yuggoth and delayed

Assisting a professor in his research, Sister Mary finds a valuable Spell (Wither). Draw 1 Spell. However, you must make a Fight (-1) check or some sticky-fingered student steals one of your items. Lose 1 Item of your choice. @Snowdown to make the check

Dexter Drake may attempt to close the gate. @Chrysis to try

    Doom track: 3/12

  • ChrysisChrysis Registered User regular
Alright. Now that we're at 3 open gates this is definitely worth a crack at. I'm going to assume (sorry) that PsychoLarry assents to Mandy's reroll being used here, assuming it is needed. Actually, I got my interpretation wrong (I think)
So step 1: Casting Voice of Ra. Lore 4, -1 Difficulty. Pay 1 Sanity, 3 Sanity remaining.
    Two hits, a good start.

Step 2: Try to close gate. Lore 4, +1 Voice, -3 Difficulty = 2 dice, needing 2 successes.
    Done.

Damn, Drake is on fire today. Gate to Ry'leh closed like it ain't no thang. Still got my Clue Token (and most of my Sanity!) as well.

  • DaemonisDaemonis Registered User regular
@Chrysis, Voice of Ra can be cast in Upkeep phase only. Find another way to close the gate, the Wizard on Fire :)

  • DaemonisDaemonis Registered User regular
Ok, reread your post... Why you said you had needed 2 successes?

  • ChrysisChrysis Registered User regular
Ok, I didn't spot the Upkeep Phase part on the wiki. Swap Voice of Ra for a Clue Token and we're all good.

Yog-Sothoth makes the difficulty of gate closing one harder. Difficulty when it refers to tests is number of successes, ergo two successes needed.

To her surprise, Sister Mary channels Bruce Lee as she slaps the sticky-fingered student's hand away from her leather messenger bag before backhanding him squarely across the face. After a quick look of shock, the bewildered student bolts and she decides to let him go, a stern "Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death" to follow him wherever he goes.

My plan was that I'd generally head towards and fight the most dangerous monster on the board, but if they're on a gate then as I understand things, after I fought them I'd be pulled through, and apparently I suck at dealing with gates.

Should I go after the monsters that aren't on gates then?

  • DaemonisDaemonis Registered User regular
I think Harvey Walters should have an encounter in the OW.
    If you insist :)
    OW ENCOUNTERS:
On the other side the gate is also guarded. A horrible monster appears! It's Ghoul. @jdarksun to decide if Harvey Walters fights or evades

Yes, clearing the streets is probably the best way to go. If there's nothing to kill, you can still go gate hopping if you have enough clues, no need to restrict yourself to monster killing duty only.

What's the commonly accepted definition of "enough"? Six inches?
