Faux-Joystick & Mouse for FPS gaming on PC

I am currently pairing a mouse with the Microsoft Strategic Commander as a keyboard replacement for FPS gaming on my PC.
While this works far better than a keyboard for me whilst gaming, there are still some annoyances that I suffer with it.
In particular, the sideways, diagonal, and rotational movement isn't as sensitive as I would like. Also, I don't want to be reliant on an unsupported 10 year old product. I'm lucky that Philip Merwarth likes it enough to write a Win7x64 driver for it, but eventually that will come to pass.
My preference would be something like the WASDIO, a failed kickstarter project. But I'm willing to entertain the use of a joystick and joystick-to-keyboard software. Or any other solution where I'm not pounding on WASD keys for movement. I've even contemplated getting a 3Dconnexion Space Navigator or the Logitech G13 even though neither doesn't seem ergonomic to me for FPS gaming.
Is there anyone out there who games on a PC with a mouse, using something other than a keyboard for their non-mouse hand?
