We win!
Game stats, for those who care about that kind of thing:
And final troop stats:
Key to abilities: Sniper abilities
HS: Headshot - Fire a shot with +30% critical chance and extra damage on critical hits based on the tech level of the sniper rifle. 2 turn cooldown.
SS: Squadsight - Allows firing at targets in any ally's sight radius. The targets still need to be in the line of sight for the sniper, but out of his range of sight.
Gs: Gunslinger - Confers 2 bonus damage with pistols.
DS: Disabling Shot - Disables the target's weapon; weapon can be fixed using a reload action.
BS: Battle Scanner - Throw an item which grants extended visibility for 2 turns; 2 uses per mission.
Op: Opportunist - Removes the sniper rifle's aim penalty on overwatch shots and allows them to cause critical hits.
Ex: Executioner - +10 aim against targets with <50% health
LP: Low Profile - Half cover functions as full cover.
ITZ: In The Zone - Killing a flanked or out-of-cover enemy does not use up an action.
Heavy abilities
FR: Fire Rocket - Fire a rocket that does 6 damage. This ability cannot be used after moving, nor more than once per mission.
HT: Holo-targeting - Shooting at or suppressing enemies also confers a +10 Aim to any allies' attacks on those enemies.
BS: Bullet Swarm - Firing the primary weapon as the first action no longer ends the turn.
SR: Shredder Rocket - Fire a rocket that causes all enemies hit to take +33% damage from all sources for the next 4 turns. The rocket's blast is weaker than a standard rocket's.
Su: Suppression - Fires a shot which impairs the targets aim and grants a reaction shot if the target moves.
RR: Rapid Reaction - Confers a second reaction shot, if on Overwatch and the first reaction shot is a hit.
HA: Heat Ammo - +100% bonus damage against robotic enemies.
DZ: Danger Zone - Increase area of effect of all rocket attacks and Suppression by two tiles.
Gr: Grenadier - Allows two grenades to be carried in one inventory slot.
WtS: Will to Survive - Normal damage taken is reduced by 2, if in cover and not flanked.
M: Mayhem - Increased damage to AoE and suppression attacks.
Assault abilities
RG: Run & Gun - Allows firing or Overwatch after Dashing on the turn Run & Gun is activated. 2 turn cooldown.
Ag: Aggression - Confers +10% critical chance per enemy in sight (max +30%).
TS: Tactical Sense - Confers +5 Defense per enemy in sight (max +20).
LR: Lightning Reflexes - The first reaction shot taken against this soldier each turn automatically misses.
CP: Close and Personal - +30% critical chance against adjacent targets.
RF: Rapid Fire - Take two shots against a single target in quick succession. Each shot carries a -15 penalty to Aim.
Fl: Flush - Fire a shot that forces the target to move; high chance to hit but reduced damage.
CCS: Close Combat Specialist - Grants an automatic reaction shot against any enemy which closes to within 4 tiles, without the need for Overwatch.
EC: Extra Conditioning - Grants bonus health dependent on the type of armour equipped.
Res: Resilience - Confers immunity to critical hits.
KI - Killer Instinct - Activating Run & Gun confers +50% critical damage for that turn.
Support abilities
SG: Smoke Grenade - Deploy a smoke grenade once per mission. The smoke confers +20 defense to all units, not just allies, and lasts during the enemy turn.
Sp: Aprinter - Allows the support to move 3 additional tiles.
FM: Field Medic - Carry 3 medkits instead of 1.
Rv: Revive - Return critically injured soldiers to 33% health instead of just preventing their death.
CD: Combat Drugs - +20 will and +10% crit chance for those in the cloud of a smoke grenade
DS: Dense Smoke - Smoke Grenades have increased area of effect and confer an extra +20 defense boost.
DP: Deep Pockets - Grants the soldier an additional inventory slot.
Psi Abilities
MF: Mind Fray - Basic psi attack. Does 5 damage and gives penalties to the targets aim, will and mobility. Lasts two turns; robotic units are immune.
Ins: Psi Inspiration - Removes Mind Fray and panic from all allies within 3 tiles, and strengthens their will by +30 for 2 turns.
MC: Mind Control - Allows the psionic to control an enemy unit for 3 turns; does not affect robots or inorganics
Some random stats:
This LP contains 2,621 screenshots.
Most improved aim - Maj. Eleven, 43 points in 6 ranks
Least improved aim - Col. Label, 6 points in 7 ranks
Most improved will - Col. Label, 40 points in 7 ranks
Least improved will - Sgt. Fearghaill, 3 points in 3 ranks
Best kill/mission ratio - Maj. Murderbot (pretty appropriately), 3.5 kills/mission
Col. Rankenphile remains the only soldier to have performed a team kill (in this reality), murdering Dongs Galore. And here's something I thought of today that amused me - when Dongs first signed up he complained about being a Nigerian and asked to be switched, so I remade his soldier as an American. The Nigerian soldier was then remade as Trippy. Dongs was murdered by Rank, Trippy survived to make the final kill of the war. RACISM DOESN'T PAY, DONGS.
Okay, I'm done. Thank you all for reading and getting involved, it's been fun despite being a lot more work than I anticipated. Sorry for the big delays in the middle, I probably wouldn't have completed the campaign if I hadn't been doing it as an LP so cheers for your patience. XCOM is a rad game, though I think it becomes far too easy once you get plasma and titan armour. That last mission was waaaaay too easy! I'm looking forward to playing again with the Enemy Within expansion, but I think I'm going to take a break first and play some other stuff.
Thanks again. Hope you enjoyed it!

So, uh...
We won. Aaand, I am never making Colonel. No big deal. Richard Winters didn't either.
So, war's over. Got to make plans for what's to come.
There was a black hole exploding with psychic radiation in the upper atmosphere. Combine that with, well, everything else, I figure that, even with the win, Civilization as we know it's probably going to start falling about soon.
Well, at least retirement won't be dull.
Have gun, will travel reads the card of the man, a knight in titan armor in a savage land.
Oh my goodness, is it finally time for me to make good?
Sign ups begin immediately. Unless I receive a specific request not to include them, individuals who signed up to play but never joined the team will be the first new meat; casualties from the bottom of the roster will also be recruited up-front. It would be helpful, however, if you should fit either of these descriptions, that you speak up about it in here.
Edit: Excellent work, Commander Smoferd. You've done the Earth and its denizens proud.

it was a consistently great read/mustache-fulfillment experience

Thanks for an awesome LP Smof, it looked like a tonne of work! I'm glad you made it through to the end, and hey, only a few people died along the way so that's a bonus.

also interested. there are still some spots on my body that aren't riddled with plasma burns and bullet holes.
Oh, yes please! "Not fit for duty," my patooty! I can fight!
Sorry I never ended up using you! It wasn't intentional. I felt pretty bad when I looked at the final troop stats and realised you hadn't been out on a single mission.
I bet you have the shiniest boots.

If it makes you feel any better, you can imagine Fox as a little rookie sitting on the bench, pleading for his shot into the big leagues.
"C'mon, Coach! Put me in! I'm ready, I know I am!"

Ha ha, no worries. It was a good read and thoroughly enjoyable.
I do not think I knew that zombified civilians were a thing.
My frantic yells of "NO STOP BAD NO NO NO NO NO" as it shambled towards poor Sergeant Leah 'Rhino' Thompson, who had moved close to the seemingly wounded civilian in the hopes of effecting a rescue, were thankfully heard by the game which stopped short of actually attacking her.

Aww. You're still trying to save civvies.
That's adorable.
More seriously, if there's ever an XCOM tv show, I need that scene. Only without the stopping short bit.

In my game Russia was the only European country to stay in after all the others quit, despite being the only country to go the entire game without ever getting a satellite.
