Ghost Recon: Online
Ghost_Recon_Online_F2P_Logo.jpg

What is GRO?
Ghost Recon Online is a F2P third person shooter for PC by Ubisoft. It is set in the Ghost Recon universe and is currently in the open beta stage of testing. It is a tactical affair which heavily favors team and objective based play over simple running and gunning. Each of the classes have some ‘future soldier’ technology options and just about every item, from weapons and armor to your class’ special items, are highly upgradable and customizable.

Gameplay
As I said earlier, GRO is a more tactical online murder simulator than most of the other offerings available (such as CoD and, Bf3) because of its use of a cover system, and it’s difficult to capture objective points. Each game and map type are based off of capturable objectives, similar to the Battlefield franchise.

Game Types and Maps
(Shamelessly Stolen from the GRO wikia)

Conquest
Conquest is an objective-based tug-of-war style game mode. There are five capture zones (objectives) spread around the maps in a linear fashion. These objectives are labeled alphabetically (A through E) starting on one side of the map and moving towards the other. The objective of the game mode is to take as many objectives as possible, with the final goal to be total control of all the objectives. There are two ways to win a Conquest game mode; take all of the objectives, or hold the majority of objectives (at least three) when the match timer expires.
When a Conquest round begins, the opposing teams start on either side of the central objective (objective C). As teams take objectives the spawn points for each team[1] move to keep the objective centered between them. For example, when point D is contested, one team spawns near point E and the other near point C.

Onslaught
Onslaught is an attack and defend game mode with two rounds, with each team gets the opportunity to attack and defend. In the existing Onslaught maps for Open Beta, there are three objective points. Attackers achieve victory by taking all three objectives. Defenders achieve victory by preventing the attackers from taking all of the objectives until the round timer expires.
The attacking team needs to take two initial objectives (A and B) in order to unlock the final objective (objective C) for capture. Once the attacking team takes the first two objectives, their spawn point is moved closer to the final objective. The defender spawn point is then moved back behind the final objective.
This game mode is similar to the "Rush" mode from Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3. However, instead of multiple sets of two objective points, there is only one initial double-objective and then a final single objective.

Holdout
Holdout is a new game mode introduced in the Triton Pack. This is the only game mode for Balaklava Sub-Pen.
Holdout involves only one control/capture point on the map, and each team has only one spawn location. The objective is to hold the point until the round ends. Each time the point is taken, 45 seconds are added to the clock. There are three rounds for each match.

Cover based
ghostrecononline2012081.jpg
(taken from a google img search)
The cover system works with just about every flat surface on each of the maps, and utilizing cover provides huge benefits besides reducing the chance of having your brain turned to a pink, pulpy spew. As soon as you take cover, a set of bonuses appears next to your internet serial killer’s character model. Most cover provides sizable bonuses to accuracy and stability while noticeably reducing recoil. The character animations, from running slides, to dolphin dives, are beautiful and silky smooth so you shouldn’t have much trouble getting used to moving around freely between acts of great violence. It also makes you feel like a bad enough dude to save the president when you sprint, slide into cover, and pop up to headshot some poor sod who was three days from shipping home.

Class system

Assault.png
Assault

Have you ever wanted to strap an exoskeleton to the outside of your lower body and six inches of steel with a tiny viewing port to your back just so you could charge like a damn rhino into some camper’s safe little nest, and then beat that day tripper to death while (optional) maniacally laughing? Yes? Assault is for you.
Conversely, have you ever wanted to strap a tiny satellite dish to your back that will, at your bidding, nonchalantly peek out from behind your super safe luxury deluxe cover and melt your foe’s faces with microwaves? Yeah, Assaults do that, too.
The assault can be played as a hyper-aggressive iron-clad gazelle, a cautious mid/long range pusher, or a mix of the two.

Weaponry: Assaults use (surprise, surprise) Assault rifles or shotguns as their primary weapons.

ARs can be capable short to long range weapons depending on their stats. ARs pack higher calibre rounds, which means they don’t lose much of their damage potential at range.

Shotguns are shotguns.

Gadgets: Assaults can use the Blitz or HEAT.

Blitz is a sheet of metal with a silly little window that you use to watch your enemies shit themselves as you smack them around with a sheet of metal. Basically, once you activate the ability you gain a massive movement speed boost for a short period of time and every time that you run into an enemy during that time, you shield smash them. While your shield is deployed, you are safe from most frontal damage and you also make a very satisfying stomping noise as you stride over your prostrate foes.

HEAT is a little satellite dish strapped to an arm, strapped to a battery, strapped to a psychopath. When you activate the HEAT ability, your tiny satellite dish pops up out of cover and proceeds to turn everything downrange into a very accurate recreation of the Chernobyl incident. Enemies exposed to HEAT burn for damage over time, and are suppressed to the point where they can not sprint and can not fire their weapons. Also, the burn damage increases the longer that the enemy is exposed to HEAT, meaning you can melt people if they don’t find sufficient cover or can not avoid staring into the tiny sun strapped to your back.

Recon.png
Recon

Recons are sneaky devils. They can choose between hanging out behind some cover pinging your oracle to instantly reveal the enemies in front of you and playing Words with Friends as you wait to implode another unwitting assault’s skull, or as an active camo wearing, bullet hose toting, be-hooded badass that outflanks enemy front lines and then makes them pay dearly for not noticing that smudge that shuffled past a moment ago. You can also play a mix of the two roles.

Weaponry: Recons use Sniper rifles or Submachine guns.

Sniper rifles feel good in this game, and can do some devastating damage if handled properly.

Submachine guns feel like taking John Candy in a Krispy Kreme. Sheer joy! They vomit rounds downrange, but suffer from low calibre munitions (they lose damage at range) and are often difficult to control on full auto.

Gadgets: Recons use Oracle and Cloak.

The Oracle provides you and your team mates with a wireframe red outline of every enemy in front of the Recon at the time of the pulse. It sees through cover and, depending on how much juice you let it use, can see very far ahead of you. Campers beware!

The Cloak is the same tried and true sneaky fellow gadget that it is in many other games. It disguises you best when immobile and will stop working if you start shooting from standing or if you sprint (I think.)

Specialist.png
Specialist

Weaponry: Supports pack Light Machine Guns or Shotguns

LMGs are excellent at long to mid range standoffs and creating huge swaths of map that are simply inaccessible to the enemy because of their suppressive power. Once in cover, with a bipod, you can use some of the higher end LMGs to deliver a precision spray of hot death at anything foolish enough to peek at your domain.

Shotguns are still shotguns.

Gadgets: Supports use Blackout and Aegis.

Blackout is a backpack mounted EMP that, once charged, makes all of your foes within the radius cringe and winge, while attempting to shield themselves from the immensity of your awesome. All enemies abilities within the area are rendered useless for a short duration.

Aegis, once charged, creates a protective bubble that prevents all incoming damage to you and teammates within the radius. It redirects the frantic shots of your enemies as you trot forward with two or three of your closest friends slaughtering those unshielded masses silly enough not to break and run at the sight of you.

Level System
GRO features a 1-30 leveling system. Each class levels independently of the other, so a level 30 assault may only have a level 1 sniper. As you level up your class you unlock more powerful weapons, more specialized armor, and better versions of your support abilities and items. Levels are gained by completing matches, and you level up fairly quickly.

Clans

Clans are shootey guilds. Join the PsB (instructions below) to join my shootey guild. The clan system in GRO allows for custom made clan vs clan matches and challenges, which is pretty neat.

Fireteams

Fireteams are shootey parties. You join a fireteam and you and your buddies will automatically be matchmade together. You also get daily fireteam missions (shootey quests.)

How ‘free’ is free?
Everything that affects the gameplay is available for purchase with rp, the in game currency that you earn (in generous amounts) at the end of each round. That said, there are regular releases of item packs and special edition weaponry that can not be bought in a bundle pack with rp, but can be purchased individually.
The current rp system is very generous, with anywhere from 50-250 rp being generated throughout a round, and bonuses being given upon the completion of a match.
If you're looking to pay some cash money to bling up the battlefield, feel free. The bundles of special items are, relatively speaking, good deals. Pay to win, GRO is not but if you decide to shell out some cash you can unlock entire gear sets a lot faster than you might have if you had worked to grind out the rp. Ghost coins are, however, overpriced in my opinion.

The Down Sides

Here there be Brazillians
As with many free to play titles, the community can be god-awful. It is not uncommon to have to mute squadmates. Muting, which is a quick and easy action in the menu tree, guts a large part of the premise of the game play; coordinated teamwork. If you're on a team of 8, and 2 of your team members don't speak a word of English or are simply disinterested in playing the same game as the rest of you, you're in for a rough erectile uppercut from even a passable opponent.

Red is good... Right?
The server systems are usually overloaded or seem to have trouble maintaining a low ping with just about everyone. Most matches will feature all 16 players with red pings next to their names. The lag that it creates, though occasionally infuriating, is generally not noticeable and does not seem to affect the outcome of matches or rounds.

Hats. Everyone needs hats.
With one exception for every class, headgear can not be purchased with in rp, and must be bought using the laughably expensive ghost coins. On the bright side, though, headgear is statless and has no bearing on gameplay.

I used to play a bit of this.

There's a smidge of pay to win in certain higher level guns being available early only for paying customers. Plus high level inserts can give bullshit stats and cost a fair chunk of change to maintain.

Here's what I wrote to @Drovek in a PM when it came up sometime ago:
    GRO's possible P2W elements are:
Magnum Ammo (straight 20% damage boost to your bullets)
Grenades cost (pitiful amounts) of in-game currency
Armour and higher level devices have 'slots' into which you put limited durability stat boosts.
Higher level guns look like they cost a fuck ton but also look KIND OF balanced to not be too extreme an upgrade.

Pretty much all of that is speculative though because it'd come down to how much in-game currency you can get. So far I've being fine (haven't being buying Magnum Ammo because fuck that noise) and haven't noticed anyone with an obvious advantage. The fact that I've being getting tons of the in-game cash due to the leveling up bonus's though mean I honestly can't comment on how easy it'd be to maintain all your shit.

It's certainly damn fun though. The 3 classes are:

Recon: Horrendously over played non team helping sons of bitches
    Sniper/SMG for weapons
Oracle: An energy based scan that reveals enemy locations in a cone forwards of the sniper.
Cloak: fucking useless non team helping ability that if you run while using a sniper in the back lines makes you a bad person. Fun to use with an SMG though

    Passives are either:
    Detect enemies sprinting near you
    Detect enemies shooting near you

    Specialist: more daka
    LMG/Shotgun
Aegis: charge shield, let go, have 8m orb over you that protects your team from bullets. Can be countered by stuff though (including you know, just running INSIDE the orb and shooting the fucker).
Black out: drains opponents device energy and stops them from attacking for a few seconds in an AOE around the support. A lot of support players run shotgun/black out and fuck stuff up.

    Passives are:
Faster device regen for team mates near by
Regenerating ammo for team mates near by (better than you'd think)

    Assault: PUSH UP THE LINE
    Assault Rifle/Shotgun
Blitz: get a shield that protects you 100% from frontal attack and charge dudes, knocking them over for easy clean up from you or your team.
Heat: FUCKING MICROWAVE CANNON. This is the best ability. You pop it and it disables you shooting in return for raying the entire area infront of you with heat rays which:

    1) slow enemy movement

    2) suppress enemies and make them incapable of shooting if they're too close

    3) deal small amounts of damage that increases rapidly if the enemy is not cowering like a baby girl.

Also you can use it from cover, without exposing yourself.

This device single handedly locks flanks down and is a FUCKING MICROWAVE CANNON. Hence why I play assault:

    Passives are:

Nearby team mates gain faster HP regen (pretty important as HP regen is about 1Hp/s out of potentially 175 (depends on class) HP and it only regens in cover)
Nearby team mates gain a percentage damage reduction.

I'd recommend it honestly. As I said I can't comment on if it's horrifically pay to win later on or not but for now it's great fun and the guns are really satisfying (though if you're using the assault rifles/an LMG get used to pulse firing/switching to semi auto a lot).

Seriously guys. MOTHER FUCKING MICROWAVE CANNON.

Everyone should play assault when learning the game. It's versatile and super effective.

If you become a recon sniper full time you're probably a bad person in this game. You do so very little for the team.

Will re-download it tonight and find out my ubi-nametag thingymajig so we can get some PA stuff going.

I will jump back into it when I build a PC but I think Specialist is better for new players. Force field and an lmg are really useful.

As an assault you need to unlock the 30 rounds "extended" magazine. That's annoying.

Arch! I'm Marlow4686 from bf3! I can't play on my 360 anymore because I moved back to Korea, so hurry up and build that PC! As for the 30 round 'extended' mags, I don't think it's that bad of an investment. They only cost around 900rp iirc, and the only weapon that I've enjoyed playing with that really needed the extra rounds terribly so far has been the Sar-21c which came with a default of 30 rounds already.

I used to use the AS Val or the second rifle you get with no extended mags and was usually top 3/top assault in rounds.

Honestly on the second rifle I had much better results at most ranges using a single shot. It's REALLY worth remembering that health regens slow as fuck in this game. Getting hit by a bullet is a BIG deal so one carefully aimed shot that hits is far better than blowing your chance at a kill because you went full auto and blew your clip away.

    Regarding specialist vs assault:

Aegis is really neat but has several nuances to using it really effectively that can make it a pain and LMG's make the class less mobile than assaults.

Just you know, don't be *that* guy with a recon sniper and cloak on. Snipers are strong because oracle can be a big deal when used well and snipers near gibbing a dudes health is a big deal for pushes. The last thing a sniper needs to give two shits about is being shot at, no one is going to kill you at that range except another sniper, NO ONE.

Oh Gawd yes this a million times this. I've found that I have the most fun when I play a recon with an smg and oracle. I pulse it as I work my way from cover to cover on the way up to the front line, and try to use it to identify easy prey (pinned or lazy foes) or to find a hole in their defense that'll allow me to turn a flank and cause havoc. Oracle is also a powerful psychological tool that can, and often does, make most of the enemy team duck back behind cover or think twice about running up a hallway for fear of the dreaded 'whizspak' of a sniper headshot. They see the 'detected by oracle' message and freeze for a moment or two, which is often just enough time for you to get the drop on them.

    Basically it's like so:

    SMG with Cloak: Flanking dude

SMG with Oracles: squishy assault that gives intel

Sniper with Oracles: battlefield control (only have one of these per team preferably)

Sniper with cloak: Fucking useless waste of space.

I don't freeze when I get oracle'd, but I do play defensive for a few seconds.

heat lets you singlehandedly lock down an entire flank/section of the map with no personal risk to yourself.

It also hard counters any aegis pushes.

    Heat is fucking insane.

Yeah, the reason I started to run heat over gigantic back shield was I wanted the ability to knock people out of or flat out kill Aegis pushes. I love that you can (slowly) advance with it on. It is absolutely disgusting what two heat users can do to an objective if they set up on opposite flanks and use it at the same time. Instant advance!

I'll add you once I get back online sometime tonight, prob around 9:00am EST. I'm 13 hours ahead of the East coast, so my work and play hours are a bit odd.

Yeah, it should be pretty easy to sign up for the US server. You just need to set the GRO website to North America and follow the download link. Personally I have been playing on the US servers, but if it looks like the Euro server is going to be more popular, I'll just start over. I'm only lvl 16 on my Assault, and 10 on the other two and I haven't bought anything with real bux, so it wouldn't be too terribly much of a hardship for me.

I downloaded the US client in, and have been playing from South Korea (best Korea), so there shouldn't be a region lock. You never know, though.

I had been playing this as Bladecruiser on the US server, if anyone sees me on, feel free to FT with me. I don't play much cause of a sound bug that cripples my system occasionally but I still get on for a match or two before it dies.

Nice! I'll send you an invite to the clan as well. I had a problem with the sound bug as well. I dealt with it by fiddling with my graphics card settings for the application. It was set to power saver for some bizzare reason. I set it to 'high quality,' and (I have an Nvidea optimus) turned off the 'high power/low power' switching options as well. I've also heard rumbles that manually finding the echo sound files in your installation and removing them has helped some folks.

Awesome, Xaquin! I'll invite you to the VERY EMPTY clan today! I also have a bunch of redeem codes that will give folks a few boatloads of RP, Grenades and inserts. I'll work on posting them today or tomorrow.

Unable to invite invalid player? I tried to add you to my friends list and it told me that there is no such player. I hope you downloaded the NA version!

I'll have to look up my name in this game but I've been playing this for a while and it's fun.

Also, this game has an option that needs to exist in all third person shooters. The ability to switch which shoulder the camera looks over.

    So useful.

It's useful and has real implications in the gameplay! The same button works to help you switch which side of horizontal cover you want to peek out from.

I honestly think this is my favorite part of this game at this point. Every third person shooter needs this, and it boggles the mind how this is the first one I've played that has it.

Yup, still without a new PC. :)

I saw this on jackfrags channel. A new map is on the way.

I wonder if Ubi will put this on consoles. The Wii U version dissapeared.

EDIT: I think new map is from Future Soldier. It was on the Khyber Strike DLC.

Do people still play this? If so what server? Because this'd be a blast with PA guys.

Me, Evma, Vedic and someone whose PA name I'm not sure of just spent a few hours on this.

I unpacked some silly T6 LMG part way through and had gleeful joy.

One of the patches broke the game on my machine. I literally can't play with it lagging to a Powerpoint Slideshow over the course of a match. It's been recognized as an issue on the forums, finally, so maybe it'll get fixed sometime in the near future. It's a good game, just... I literally can't play it.

Since this is out on Steam soon, a heads up:

The game uses a god awful horrible .NET installer/launcher which actually installs itself to obscure folders names along the lines of C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Apps\2.0\9X0XJ1Y7.T96\ QJ589TEA.PXY\laun...app_59711684aa47878d_0001.0022 _833b8f081ed3c4d0. This can create problems for your firewall settings and the way you launch the game (for example, me and a number of other users must constantly use the install file to launch it, rather than go via the normal shortcut, otherwise we get connection errors). The game also goes through a ridiculous cycle (also probably because of .NET) of validating itself online before it launches, which can take up to a minute (and this is before patching), and hilariously launching a COMMAND LINE PROMPT when the game starts! Haven't seen that in over 15 years...

Oh, and before the game was on Steam, you'd think that it would use Uplay to download and patch, right? Wrong! You had to go to their website and download the correct installer for your region (or not be able to play with your friends), and only patch via that (further proof that Uplay sucks so hard that even Ubisoft doesn't want to use it... only trouble is that the GRO launcher sucks even more).

Once in the game, you immediately encounter F2P vomit all over the menus, with shopping options everywhere. WARNING: If you buy a weapon with one profession, you cannot use it with another profession, even though they know how to use it! Yes, you must purchase the same weapon multiple times if you want to switch professions (yay for the lock-in that creates... you'll love it when you end up in a match with 60% snipers on your team). You also cannot save up money to buy a more expensive weapon. You have to purchase one weapon in every "tier" (even though you don't want it) in order to be able to buy the one you really want to use! The shooting range is a nice try before you buy touch, though. If you don't plan to spend any money, I think someone on their official forums calculated that you need to play for hours a day for months at a time to afford decent gear, and yes, it IS pay 2 win because better gear does significantly more damage and can add significant health and armor. Oh, and the latest brilliant update from Ubisofts added armor maintenance which means that shit you buy breaks so you have to buy it again.

Another brilliant update from Ubisoft they added recently was a new ranking system... on top of their old ranking system... that's on top of levels (right now, I suspect levels are completely useless... oh, and there's a badge system with challenges as well... confused yet?). Anyway, this new ranking system penalized you if you lost, so guess what happened? Many players simply quit a match the moment their team began loosing. Have you begun to question what wonderful drunks they hired to make decisions at Ubisoft yet?

Speaking of snipers, you don't win any matches from killing people in this game, only from taking points, and with snipers being almost the most popular profession, guess what happens when you end up on a team where half of them just sits around near the spawn point camping? Match making is fully automatic, yet horribly unbalanced, even after years of development, often pitting you against a team of several expert players with your side only populated by inexperienced players.

Since match making is fully automated, you also have no control over your ping, and some matches can get pretty laggy. This is masked well by the cover system and pacing of the game, though.

Still with me? Ok, well, truth to be told, that cover system and pacing of the game... is bloody brilliant. There is nothing like it out there today. It's slow and deliberate, similar to the old SWAT 3 game. The cover system is the most flexible I've ever seen, with dynamic peeking around corners and more stances and actions than any other game (I think). The HUD also is designed so that you always know what is happening around you, and if you check on it (which is easy), you never have to get shot in the back, which is the biggest selling point for me! And you can get around most of the pay 2 win imbalance by teaming up with a friend over Teamspeak and working together.

So yes, despite all the shit Ubisoft force fed this game, I still play it, but I pray every time that someone will copy the cover system and strategic play into a regular paid title.

Eh, the repairs are 80 a match for every bit of armour regardless of tier.

Also speaking as someone whose put money into the game:

    A) the matchmaker absolutely takes into account gear. If I queue by myself I get put against people with correctly tiered stuff.

    B) I can't really think of a match I've lost because the opposition have better gear. This isn't to say the model they run isn't pay to win or complete dogshit. Just that its the sort of game where skill still trumps money.

Also the server thing is the dumbest.
