You may have heard of Minecraft, a little hit from a man called Notch that made
millions of dollars. Notch invested some of this money into his own company, named Mojang, and they're about to launch their second big project into the world.
Welcome to Scrolls
So what is Scrolls? Its one of these fancy online trading card games, only its not designed to pick up your wallet and messily devour it. Open beta starts tomorrow using the same model as Minecraft (buy in and you'll get full access to every new update, including the full game when its officially released).
A rough guide to what is included in the beta can be found
here. So, how does the game work?
When you buy scrolls, you'll get to choose one of three starter decks. This deck will form the basis of your collection, with further scrolls being bought with ingame gold. A small selection of scrolls (6 random scrolls per week, per player) can also be bought with real money, but the gold needed to buy these weekly 6 scrolls in game can be earned in 2 to 3 victories, sharply limiting any advantage gained from using the cash shop.
You throw 50 cards (up to 3 of each) into a deck and run off to duel other players. You'll fight on a board that looks like this:
Summoning creatures, flinging spells, that sort of thing. Its nice and turn based, and I'd say it was remarkably stress free.
You'll pick one of three resources to build your deck around, though splashing other colours is possible. You have:
Order: A military resource, based around formations of humanities best. Order players will set themselves up behind a spiky shield wall, deploying lots of troops to gradually steamroll opponents. Their creatures often buff each other, and their spells often impact movement of friends or foes.
Growth: A wilder resource, based around growing individual creatures. Growth is packed with wolves, vikings and enchantments to make the smallest creatures pack a nasty punch as the game goes on.
Energy: Energy is full of engineers, golems and robots. Energy is a bit more controlling, throwing around spells to directly destroy your opponents creatures and mighty bits of artillery to dominate the board. You will hate their mortars, even if you're the one using them.
Decay: Coming a bit after beta, decay is going to involve... death and stuff? They haven't really said much.
So, if you want a new and cheaper trading card game, give scrolls a go!

Everyone should try it.
Also, I dunno how the hell this is going to succeed with the glut of free online TCGs that have been coming from every corner of the internet lately. I guess it has the whole Mojang name recognition, but will a TCG attract that OCD lego-loving crowd?

I don't think I'm s'posed to talk about it yet.

I think they're banking on name recognition and also the whole tactical board game kinda element to separate it from the rest of the pack
It is kinda pricey for what it is, though

If the beta price is $20, I can only assume that it'll be at least $30 after the beta ends
Which would be on the upper end of a reasonable price point even if a) there weren't so many current and upcoming competitors in the genre already, and b) the game wasn't apparently structured around microtransactions on top of the cost of the base game itself
I have the sneaking suspicion that Mojang are looking at the pricing model for Minecraft and assuming from there that they can charge whatever they want and people will buy it because it's a Mojang game, not realizing that nobody really cares about Mojang, only about Minecraft.
Anyway, I've been drooling over Scrolls for a while, I can't wait to get home tonight and try it out. Notch hired a lot of smart and talented people and I'm eager to see what they turned out here.
I think I'll wait for actual Hearthstone, myself. I've always like Blizzard.
we also talk about other random shit and clown upon each other
Cost is a big issue here. I believe its justified because it sharply limits the amount of microtransactions in game. It takes... an hour or so to get an equal number of cards to those available weekly from the store? You cannot buy booster packs with real cash, and completing a single player challenge will net you between 3-5 scrolls. The pendulum is pretty far away from the microtransaction side of things. Hearthstone and others of its ilk, from what I know, will let there be a vastly bigger gap between players with cash and players without.
Now, I'd like it without any microtransactions, but the nature of card games is the constant introduction of new cards, and I believe that's why they want there to be some way to get income from players in game to fuel further development.
Thank you for single handedly justifying a lawsuit.
Your friend,
BETHESDA
I'm pretty sure Bethesda and them have already had legal conversations about the name, as I recall
Something that came out when Tycho revealed he was doing some writing for Scrolls I thought
Yeah, Bethesda vs Notch was where Notch tried to get them to settle over a Quake 3 tourney after Bethesda accused Mojang of copyright infringement because "Scrolls" could be confused with "Elder Scrolls".
Purchasing was kind of a shitshow, but I figured it out (log in at Mojang, then come back to scrolls.com/buy, refresh until the store loads, buy damn game) and I am now "Imperfect" in-game.
Of couse, I'm at work right now, so I won't be on until tonight, but whatevs.

ill pay

That's the joke.
I might not even have enough money.
Is it any fun?
This is "Released", but will still have the full team working on it to add new features for an extended period of time.
Very easy to unlock stuff with in-game currency and not spend cash. Unless you want to buy full decks, which still aren't to bad to get in-game.
For $20 it was totally worth it.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'm such a sucker for these kind of games, I hope it will be fun. It sure looks awesome though.
Oh, I know that. But I can wait.
THANKS OBAMA
I keep getting "connection lost " errors while playing, even though I'm not losing my Internet connection.
