My Japanese PS2 recently croaked. I have a bunch of import games, no PS3, and have read that PS3 games are apparently region free and that the US and Japan are in the same Blu-ray region.
Logical conclusion: replace broken Japanese PS2 with Japanese PS3 - then I can play US PS3 games, Japanese PS3 games, my collection of import PS2 games, and Blu-ray movies in either region. US PS2 games wouldn't work but I have a working local PS2.
Seems great. My question is simply if someone knows whether or not the Japanese PS3 can get on the US Playstation store. I don't know how consoles from various regions connect to the store, if it can be changed, or what. Does anyone have any experience with this?
You can sign up for any regions PS Store from any PS3 (so a Jap PS3 can have a US account, etc). However, in order to actually buy things from the US account, you'll need to have a US credit card.
I should point out though, that if you're getting a Japanese PS3 you'll suffer from censorship that the US or Euro consoles won't. Eg, since Resistance only has one global SKU (instead of having a seperate SKU for each region), it censors the game if you play it on a Japanese PS3.
It checks what region the PS3 is from and then plays the version of Resistance according to that. So, if you put a copy of Resistance into a Japanese PS3, it'll be the censored version but if you put the same copy of Resistance into a PAL PS3, it'll be the uncensored version.
As for what it censors, I'm pretty sure it takes all the 'hero' moments out of the game. I think there might be less blood too.
chaossoldier: Yeah, plus it has a 50hz mode for people that live in PAL countries that have a shitty old tv (though if they don't even have a PAL-60 tv, they shouldn't really have a PS3).

Woah... that's really weird. Are any other games doing the same thing yet?

Not that I know of. Insomniac seem to like the approach though, so Ratchet & Clank Future will probably do the same thing as well (not that it will have anything worth censoring).

I'm pretty sure both Japan and US use NTCS format. Japan just falls into Region 2 protection.
