Did you ever wake up in the middle of the night, hours before the rest of the world, a cold sweat permeating your brow? Did you ever wake like that, and as you watched the sunrise though: What if Diablo and Marvel Comics did it? What would their baby be? Well Gazillion Entertainment did, and the answer is: Marvel Heroes.
What is Marvel Heroes oh handsome and cool guy?
Well Marvel heroes is a new free to play game from Gazillion Entertainment and Marvel Comics studio that lets you, yes you, behind the wheel of your favorite heroes.
Free to play? Sounds fishy. Do I need to buy extra content?
There is no need to buy it, you get a character of your choice out of a roster of 5 (The Thing, Storm, Daredevil, Scarlet Witch, and Hawkeye) at the start and another after the first area. Other characters can drop randomly and you always get one the first time you beat the final boss (Good luck, no mortal can dare take Doom) you can also buy costumes for your favorite heroes
Sounds ok, but what kind of game is it?
Well as I mentioned its kind of like Diablo, you click and kill guys and you have a skill tree and you get loot thats character specific and you kill more guys and ect... oh and theres a pretty cool crafting system in place as well
What are the heroes I can pick from in this game?
Well the Devs have said they are already working on new ones, but so far:

Scarlet Witch is a lot of fun to play and I'm interested in all the group challenges once I can do them
Also it's stuff like this that makes me sad Doom probably isn't going to be an Avengers movie villain.

Also, and this confused me because their wording is iffy. When you swap to a new character or use the npc to jump to different points in the story, you do not lose access to waypoints and story progress past then.
Concerning Endgame. Each hub (Avenger's Tower, Xavier's School, and I think the Hellicarrier) has green/red/purple consoles. You progress through them in order, and each hub's console will unlock when you finish the previous hub. The wording in game makes it sound like they are just the same thing in different places, when in fact there is a progression. The green consoles are daily missions taken from different ares of the game, ending in a boss fight (Shocker, Taskmaster, Magneto, etc). They are leveled up from their locations in the story. The first time you beat a boss each day will give you one Cosmic Shard. I don't think Shards drop from anywhere else except those first kills, but I haven't confirmed it. Red consoles are those same instances, but hard mode. They also drop shards, on a different timer. Purple consoles are group missions (Do not go in those without a full group, we tried it with three people and got smashed. Handily). Red and Purple portals require Cosmic Keys, and these drop from green dailies. There is also pvp but since nothing is balanced with it in mind, it is just silly. Plus, it costs a Cosmic Shard each time to enter, so just save those for Cards.
Level your crafter. His recipes are beyond useful. You can turn every blue you find into a purple, every purple you find for another hero into a purple for your hero. You can unbind purples from your hero to trade to other people, add affixes to your costumes, or costume cores, granting hero stat bonuses. I can't speak to vendors, but It seems a safe bet to flat out ignore leveling them. It is going to take a lot to get your crafter up to snuff, so you don't really have time to get the gear vendor up, and all that he sells seems below what you find anyways.
If your hero has a high damage single target ability, even if you aren't going to use it, level it. For the love of god, put at least a point in to it. If you drop in an instance and find your boss has Heals While Injured, you are going to want that ability. Its what got me through HWI Shocker in green and red.
Since there's only the first few chars for free, and it sounds like changing chars is a non-trivial affair, I'll probably be playing Hawkeye.

Be careful with the stash screen if you have funbucks lying around, I clicked on the unlock stash button and it used my funbucks without prompting me further

Nope! That's sure inconvenient!
But then, this whole game seems like someone wanted to make Diablo, and another person wanted to make an MMO, and so they put tape across the middle of the room and didn't cross over onto the other person's side ever
And then their request for a delay got rejected and they reluctantly banded together to mash together their stuff no matter how poorly it fit together and then shove it out the door before it was ready
I kinda like this game but it is like... two completely different half-baked games in one

though going into endgame as black panther i am wishing i rolled iron man
except i waited too long to get the iron man starter pack so...
this game was originally under development as a full-fledged MMO by Cryptic (the city of heroes dudes) and then got picked up by Gazillion

Then went over to Hell's Kitchen and encountered exactly what the Rock, Paper, Shotgun article spent the entire time bitching about. Everyone trying to kill the same things for the same questline. That was...jarring.
Still, its not a bad game. Certainly a lot of room for enhancement and refining.
This explains so much!
And yeah, I am a butt, and it is still fun

Oh! I stutter framed through the Venom event and got a costume drop! For Daredevil, even!
It was the fucking starter costume. Well, at least I can craft with it.
The thing with this is (as Dable mentions above) there are overworlds and instances. The overworlds are like this, but the instances are not at all. Oh, and like Diablo there are sidequest areas. In Hell's Kitchen I found Gabillion Entertainment where some game developers were being held by Hand ninja's. I also found a grocery store being robbed, these were both instanced things and cool
I am also lucky that one of my favourite Marvel heroes is Hawkeye
Once I realized all of the actual mission areas were instanced, my concerns about the flood of heroes in one area went away
I spent 20 bucks for extra stash tabs and costumes and such
