Deciding on a monitor for me
Hi everyone. I'm hoping to upgrade my monitor for my PC. I know everyone has their own needs and preferences, so I was hoping you guys could help me based on what I'm looking for.
The most important thing is PC gaming; RPGs, MMOs, strategy games and some FPS are what I play. My biggest preferences are screen size, contrast and color, in that order. I don't really worry too much about refresh rate or viewing angle since my eyes don't really catch on to higher frame rates and I sit rather closely to my monitor (2-3 feet). I'm also open to using a TV. My budget is about $350, max $500.
Oh, and my current monitor is the Samsung XL2370. Its nice, but I'd like a bigger size and better color.
The ones I have found are:
Asus VS278Q-P
or if a tv:
Samsung UN32F5500AFXZA
If you guys have any ideas or other suggestions, I'd be grateful. Thanks!

these are the same LG panels that in apple cinema displays, dell ultrasharps, etc, as in from the exact same factory. They just have a few less input options, and worse stands. But they're the best computer monitors you can get right now.
Battle.net
True, it just gives me pause that they still list it as an LED backlight when it's a different model. Review says it takes time to warm up and puts out noticeable heat now. Also apparently the new version has an antiglare coating when the old one was glossy, and has wide gamut color now (could be good or bad).
I just got the monoprice one
it is really goddang good
The casing is actually pretty good, and the stand is apparently greatly improved upon what it used to be before they changed things up. Which they did, a few months ago. This thing is thin and looks amazing, no dead pixels anywhere. The DVI and VGA input only is a bit of a bummer, but the price is really hard to argue with.
The only downside is that there is some minor what looks like light bleed in a couple of corners on a black screen, but if there are any colors present at all you can't see it. (though maybe I'm wondering if that is RMA-able)
EVEN with that though, this thing still looks great and I would absolutely recommend it to anyone
Oh well. Still crazy cheap
I like the monoprice one - are any of their IPS models good in case I want to go for something bigger?
Also, I'm trying to use this monitor for console gaming as well, if possible. Would IPS be good for that also? The main reason I was considering a TV also was because my history with console gaming on monitors has been very negative, while PC gaming on TVs, for my eyes, has been perfectly fine.

oh, also something I just learned, this 27" Dell Ultrasharp IPS monitor is only $584 right now.
So, you could spend a litle more for knowledge that your panel is definitely going to be the best quality, and some other stuff.
Apparently going higher than 27" for a computer monitor just gets way more expensive for not enough benifit, as well.
edit: now almost wishing I had seen that Dell one sooner, but even with that discount it is still about 200 bucks I can buy other things with
viewing angles
I have horrible posture and slouch like you would not believe at my desk. feet up on the desk. monitor up on a stand. So, way off angle.
With my old monitor, stuff was always super dark. Now, I can see everything clearly and with accurate colors from ALL OF THE ANGLES
Mine gets here on Tuesday!
If you also want to use a console on the monitor, your going to need something with a decent scaler built in, so not sure how well the monoprice model works on that. it does say it accepts a few different resolutions, so you might be ok, but I would do some checking around to see how well it's worked for others.
And it's not the panel type that would lead to you having a bad past with console gaming on pc monitors, as the lcd's in either a tv or a monitor are the same. It's the internal scalers and other video processing equipment that a TV has that monitors generally don't need.
If you want hdmi you want that Dell one I linked.
Well I wouldn't worry about inputs that much, hdmi<->dvi adapaters are $2.50
In short, so far I'm loving the crap out of this monitor! No dead pixels and it worked great for a gaming session last night.
Sat down to try out borderlands 2 at 1440p and it looked great and half an hour disappeared pretty fast
HDMI 1.4 can drive 4k2k (ultraHD) at 30hz, so I imagine 1440p (which is under 1/3 the pixels) can be driven over HDMI. I think the issue is most of those korean monitor manufacturers either don't bother to use controllers that know how to deal with 1440p resolutions coming from HDMI or they're specifically omitting higher resolutions from their controllers for some particular reason (like extra latency or something that someone who has more technical knowledge of this stuff could probably have a guess at)
I didn't bother buying a 27" korean IPS that had an HDMI port, but as far as I know most of the korean monitors will allow you to output unscaled 1080p and deal with black boxes but not add any more input latency.
