[Archipelago] - Board game worth buying?

After checking out Shut Up & Sit Down's review of Archipelago (via PA TV), I'm intrigued. Has anyone played it before? Is it worth the considerable price tag? I have a small group of board gamers who can appreciate a good German design. Settlers of Catan is one of our usual favorties and I think they might like Archipelago, based on the similarities.
