Thanks for the replies guys. Yes, I realize it's an MMO. I have played it in the past. I'm including it in my ultimate FF series playthrough. Since it's an MMO and a much bigger time investment, I'll probably get it during the Summer Sale if possible and sprinkle in my play sessions in and around the other games in the series.

FFXI is weird in that they keep adding things. Like, a lot of things. Not just tiny skill changes or new dungeon/raid X, but like, 'Here we're going to add an entire subsystem wherein you can turn into a monster, kill other monsters, and learn about how awesome it is being a monster. Then take all that awesome monster knowledge and use it to raise your stats and such because fuck yeah you were just a bee for an hour, you should know how to dodge better.'

Yes, that is a thing they are adding.

As for it being a MMO: There are so many ways to boost exp/quickly level/the content isn't level synced anymore/equipment outstrips what the game was originally designed for so badly (And intentionally, mind.) now that you can rip through the game solo quite quickly. About almost a year ago I gave it a shot for a bit on a fresh character on a new account (A friends, actually.) just to see how hard it was. I fairly blew through the game and got near the end of the original storyline at about the 60 hour mark. Give or take. The bonus of course being that once you're that buff you're pretty much ready to trounce through the first couple of storylines, and going through those will level you enough to get through some of the others. So once you start kicking through actual storyline you can knock out the first four or so fairly handily.

For all I don't play as much as I'd like/want/think I should, I still love the crap out of the game.

I played FF11, got to 20ish on a red mage and unlocked subclass. Decided to level up my monk solo. Ran fucking forever to find a set of mobs I could fight pretty easily. It poisoned me with a fucking unable to heal debuff that lasted like an hour. I couldn't rest and regen or heal or anything. I quit playing after that, wasn't about to run another 30 minutes to get back to town. Goddamn, that sucked.

I tried out FFXI way back in the day and the whole forced-grouping thing to do basically anything and how fucking dickish some of the players were just killed it. Also the whole leveling down thing, I mean, really? I'd give it a try again if it was free, mind you, since I guess it's way less punch you in the nuts grindy now.

So um, is Surgeon Simulator actually any good, or is it funnier to watch than to play?

Also, it was an utterly devious move on their part, getting people to buy their game in droves at full price the day before the game goes on sale.

    Got BOTP'd.

Yeah it's definitely a product of the era in which it was released. Though they've improved stuff profoundly, particularly for lower level stuff with enemies giving a lot more xp, having wider level ranges in which they give that XP, no xp loss till level 30 and so on.

Still though, compared to pretty much any other modern MMO, XI is brutal and definitely not for everyone. For those who dig it though, there's so much goodness to be found. It still has, pretty handily, the best plot and stories of any MMO.

And two more for the new thread:

    Enjoy!
I will totally take any cards, but the ones I'm really looking to trade for right now are Endless Space - I only need two more, and one more badge craft gets me to level 20, but the bot I've been using for trading never seems to have them in its inventory :(

You guys should all get it on that Hamilton's Great Adventure giveaway. It's a fun puzzle game, and more people need to play it (and I need to finally finish the last level).

that is actually good to hear. I loved the game as well at release and for a couple years after but the wait times were rough. SE probably wiped my character long ago which is unfortunate because i had unlocked all of the jobs except blue mage which had just been released when i last played, but it could be fun to kick around again if the game goes on sale.

Surgeon Sim is a lot of fun to play as long as you realize that it's going to be an exercise in frustrating controls. You can think "oh, I can handle it better than in <whatever> video" but - no, no you can't. The controls are every bit as horrible (by design!) as they look in trailers.

It has a lot of juvenile humor to it, though. Like an achievement for giving the finger to your patient. Or losing your watch in his body. And stuff.

Good for a diversion and with enough challenges (complete X operation in Z time, or without losing more than Y amount of blood, etc) to keep you coming back. And several amusing easter eggs to find.

I think the "most played game" thing kicks in if you haven't played enough other games in the last two weeks or so.

This is particularly embarrassing if you've bought an MMO through Steam; every time I turn my steam sig on it shows 500 hours of Rift.

    Early thoughts on Borderlands 2.

Fun so far, obviously I enjoyed the first, I like shooting mans and collecting loots. There's an awful lot of memes and stuff though, it's like I'm playing the front page of reddit at times. The menus are just awful. Someone had to make a conscious decision to have them be worse than the BL1 ones. Why would you do that. Maybe if I play with a controller they'll be better, but then the gunplay will be awful, so I dunno what they were thinking there.

Eww, they kept the XP loss? Fuck that.

Only level 30+, and pretty much every zone has a book you can get a reraise from assuming you've done any amount of fields/grounds of valor pages (and you will), so exploring isn't as dangerous as it once was. It's not as bad as it sounds, you really shouldn't be dying that much if you're in a good party/alliance...if you're leveling in Abyssea there's things you can unlock fairly easily to reduce xp loss in Abyssea to virtually nil when you die.

All of the things you're saying make me tempted to try it. Yet I also like shiney graphics. I realise it's a bit off topic but would you mind explaining why people seem so lukewarm/mild on XIV and adore FF XI still?

Well, XIV 1.0 was shit. SE has admitted it was complete shit. It barely qualified as a game, and while XI isn't everyones bag, it is inarguably a content rich game that is fully fleshed out, fully featured, and well regarded despite its age. XIV released on the coattails of XI, and threw it all away. It had little, to no, actual 'content' at launch, broken systems, a terrible engine that required a redonkulous PC and little to no care taken in the design of the game from the way it looked, to what there was to do. People got burned, because it looked pretty and they put their trust in SE to not sell them a turd. Even when the game was in beta, it had a lot of defenders, because people couldn't believe that there wasn't more content than there was in beta. "It's just beta, there'll be more content in launch"; then it launched and nope.

XI had established a lot of things that they could have cribbed, and aside from some visual cues on race design, it took virtually nothing. And by the time XIV came out, there were so many MMO's that were readily accessible and even if they were garbage, they tended to at least have things to do, and play in a way that was generally universal (WoW-like anyway) for the genre. XIV took none of that. So yeah, it took nothing from its predecessor and took nothing from the vast array of other MMO's out there. And what it ended up as was nothing. YoshiP took over a few months after launch and started turning it around, implementing some decent content, and features; but it was all built upon a broken engine, and a shitty server system. It was announced shortly after he took over that the game was going to be relaunched entirely; but they used the remainder of the 1.0 days as a testbed for different features and other things. By the time 1.0 ended last November it was actually a decently playable game. Nothing most people would want to pay for, but it had content and wasn't complete and total shit like it was at launch. YoshiP and his team did so much with so little that it gave everyone paying attention a ton of faith and respect for him; and made SE give him the reigns and the checkbook to do it right.

Now, XIV is a different game entirely. It looks great, plays great, has a ton of content and had the game launched in the state A Realm Reborn is now, it would have been a runaway hit, no questions. I mean, not a 'wow-killer', if that term even means anything anymore; but a game that SE could have banked on for years to be a ready source of cash like XI has been. SE probably would have moved to phase out XI already had this happened; but as it stands now, even if ARR is a success, XI is also here to stay; the target players are too different, they're too different types of games now. XI is surely the more hardcore, and XIV is now a readily accessible MMO that cribs most of the best features of other modern MMO's and does it in a cohesive way that doesn't feel jarring or forced.

ARR is a genuinely great game, and I hope that people who took it in the ass with 1.0 give it a shot; virtually everyone who has raves about it. I think a decade from now it will too be well regarded like XI is, but it will never be the blockbuster it could have been simply because of people being burned once and moving on. But it will still end up being a constant cash flow for SE; the game is too good to not maintain a decent population for the years to come.

Keep in mind though, when FFXI launched, at least in the West, it was its own sort of clusterfuck. Even though it was a product of its time it was still more obtuse than other games like Everquest or Asherons Call. It had an unwieldy control scheme that was based around the Playstation 2 and not the PC (where it launched first), and a UI that was wonky as hell. A lot of people bought it expecting something it wasn't, and because it was so brutal, so uninviting (unless you were really willing to invest), it had an arguably disastrous launch like XIV did. However XI had the advantage of being an actual playable game. :P What got it its reputation was unending support by SE (even to this day, as others and myself have pointed out, is still regularly getting whole new content) and a dedicated community of players who dove in head first.

Anyway here is the FFXIV thread, it's pretty active since the game is in beta and it has ended up being quite excellent

And here is the FFXI thread, that is totally inactive except now and then when there's a few of us playing :P
