Are you ready? After nine long years, are you ready for Miyamoto's garden 3 (Known as Pikmin 3 in some regions.)
OUT AUGUST 4TH BABY!
They've been waiting for you.
F.A.Q.
Why do I care?
Hey what now? Why should you care about Pikmin? Do you even like fun? Pikmin is an action/RTS hybrid in which you take control of a captain who's crash landed on
Earth an alien planet who has to command an ant-like creature called Pikmin. You destroy all of the natural wildlife to raise your new found army and collect neat doohickys and whatnot.
"Neat doohickys?" You mean Duracell batteries and smashed Dr. Pepper cans?
Not this time, instead of conveniently labeled trash you are collecting fruit for your starving home planet. However, there's a twist this time, you have to get enough fruit to feed the three captains under your control whilst bringing enough back for your people.
Three captains? Who are they?
Alph, Charlie, and Brittany.
Where's Olimar?
That's part of the mystery you goose.
What kind of Pikmin are we looking at?
Red, yellow, and blue are returning. With two new types confirmed Rock and Pink Pikmin.
Oooooh, I like new things. What do they do?
Rock Pikmin are just that, Pikmin made of rock, their function seems to be similar to Pikmin 2's Purple Pikmin;
Second we've got Pink Pikmin, who can motherfucking fly. Yeah, enough said.
Wait, weren't there more Pikmin than this?
Unfortunately, Purple and White Pikmin have been demoted to the game's Co-Op mode.
What are the controls like?
Nintendo has shown off Gamepad, Wii U Pro, and Wiimote/nunchuck, and Wiimote/nunchuck/gamepad use. The Wiimote and Nunchuck combo will work the same as it has for the New-play Pikmin titles, while the Gamepad will allow you to switch captains on the fly with your nifty map.
Say what now? Wiimote/nunchuck/gamepad?
You can utilize the map of the gamepad while also using it as a sensor bar for your Wiimote
Will there be off-screen play?
Absolutely!
Is there multiplayer this time around?
Yep! The game features Co-op challenges and Bingo battle.
Did I just hear that right?
You sure did, Bingo battle is the new competitive mode where you are given a bingo card with enemies, fruit, and marbles. It's your job to get the combination necessary for a bingo before your opponent.
What kind of online does the game support?
So far we know of an online leaderboard that tracks your number of Pikmin and your challenge mode clear time.
Is there any Miiverse integration?
Yes sir, you can use your in game
Gamepad KopPad to take screenshots in first-person to share on the Miiverse page.
I came here to talk about the Wii U's sales figures and how Nintendo is doomed.
Industry thread right here buddy.

Also Nintendo's official website for the game has some neat wallpapers to download. Why do they never have 1920x1080 versions of the wallpapers they offer for their games?
According to some on Gaf, it's roughly 12 or so hours.
This is more than Pikmin (which I 100% in six hours) and roughly the same playtime as Pikmin 2 (Which I 100% in around 12 hours)

It's really great and polished.
I don't want to say too much since discovery and exploration are part of the drawcard.
The world has new features. There's three captains to swap between. Better controls (assuming you use the WiiMote and Nunchuck). Enemy and world design is Nintendo standard (ie. Excellent).
I'll spoiler a few of the things I saw in my first 12 days:
- Animals and plants that react differently to the amount of light in the area.
- Interesting level set ups. Early on two captains are separated by a river. You need to share Pikmin across the divide so each captain can solve the puzzles on each side.
- The GamePad map is pretty useful for finding lost Pikmin.

....well, dammit. Probably the only case where the removal of advertising has made me sad. Digging up cans of shoe polish and such was just so damn charming.
The feature I'm missing most from Pikmin 2 is the bestiary mode. (Maybe I haven't found it yet).
You know the one where it would show the monsters the natural habitat, and you could throw in little carrots (not Pikmin) to see what they would do.

That said I'm sure my 2yr old daughter would love watching it as she has plush yellow 'Pickman' from Club Nintendo snuggled up in her bed at the moment.
Red pickman was banished to Mummy and Daddy's room because 'He has a scary nose'.
Pikmin don't have graves, you know.
They're called Pik Piks you know. :P
Also, I'll also be sad if there is no beastiary, as I loved reading Olimar's thoughts on the creatures. Was there one in the original? I can't remember.
I'm ok with the objects being gone. As it was every Pikmin has involved something different to collect. 1 had ship parts, 2 had objects for moolah, and 3 has fruit to feed your planet. Tell me which one is the most important. :P

I'm finding the game very 'one more day'-ish. There's always a wall to knock down, a cave to check out, a creature to beat, an item to collect.
I really love the time management aspect. I suspect the later levels will be more brutal in that regard.
The game is designed so you dont have to?
The game automatically creates a save file after every in-game 'day'. You can load any of those days if you want. Prusumably it would wipe your current progress if you did so.
I've had a few days where I've screwed up royally, lost 80 pikmin and collected virtually nothing. Replaying the day is an option, but I'd rather struggle onwards.
Me too.
I amassed a huge amount of tiny graves that day.
