How real is Astral Projection? CAN YOU DIE?

I use to think Astral Projection was bogus, but I've been reading up a lot about it lately and I'm not so sure anymore.

Some say its basically all mental, like a really vivid lucid dream. Other theories purport that we are in a holographic universe and what we call "astral travel" is actually our conscious peeking through wavefronts just a little bit. Whatever the real explanation is though is irrelevant; people really seem to be convinced they are having these astral projections. I can't imagine that so many people would lie about their experiences for no real benefit.

I've wanted to try astral projection, but I'm afraid of the idea of being killed utterly while doing it. Supposedly some people get dragged into lower planes and killed there by negative entities, or they get lost some where and never make it back to their body to wake up. Seeing as how it's possible a person can think themselves to death or into a coma I don't find that impossible.

Has anyone here ever tried this? Seen what it's like? Is it worth it? Is it all bullshit?

UFO abductees? People who make up outrageous shit for attention or to make themselves feel special and diferent, or just better than those mundanes who keep their eyes closed. The human capacity for self delusion is strong. There are people who advocate long enclosure in an isolation tank to calm the body and let the mind open up to the astral world... kind of ignoring the fact that prolonged sensory deprivation kind of makes yourbrain wig out in the abscense o all the data it's usually processing.

Anyway, one way or another I gurantee that 'astral projection' will not be what kills you.

As long as a githyanki doesn't sever the silver cord, you should be fine.

When people tell you astral projection (or other hocus-pocus stuff) is real / they have experienced it, they are one of a few things:

    1. Delusional
    2. Lying

It's possible to have very vivid lucid dreams that make it seem like something is real. Our brain can do some tricky stuff - like creating memories on the fly based on new input, or believing pretty much anything it wants to. That's not magic, it's just our brain - believing that your lucid dream was TRULY an out of body experience is a delusion. People can be very convinced of delusions.

People also lie about stuff for attention, money, etc. That covers another big branch of the whole 'astral horoscope fortune teller' mumbo-jumbo. Not just that, but people will knowingly lie and say they experienced something they didn't to fit in. It's well documented in psychology how social pressure can affect people.

If you ever wonder if any of this stuff is real, or people have magic powers, just look at the prizes for evidence of the paranormal and see how many have been claimed.

Also, when it comes to Bigfoot / UFO's / etc, this XKCD sums it up nicely.

    Settled

EDIT - No, you won't die because of astral projection. There is a non-zero chance you will die, but there is always a non-zero chance you will die at any / every point in time you are alive. Has nothing to do with magic.

Make sure you don't try astral projection in a room with a ceiling fan.
