I'm sympathetic to the problem that audio (and voice acting in particular) is the most difficult thing to create in your basement, but those videos would have been a thousand times better if it had been more than mashing together random voice clips from the game.
I agree, but the intended audience already knows exactly what those characters sound like. IMHO, it's jarring to hear someone else voicing them unless they're especially good sound-alikes. I actually prefer it when there's no voicing at all and the storytelling is all visual.

I thought they were mashed together quite well, myself.
I promise that recording voice dialogue is not the most difficult thing. I find SFM much harder than working with audio. I've got maybe $250 worth of gear (it could be done cheaper), so that's really the only hurdle for it.
Getting the right voice for the characters would be impossible, though.
I hope Valve just hires the guy who does the VSH mode dialogue for Saxton Hale if they ever want to use him for a video, otherwise it will seem so very off.
I thought the video did a good job with what they had, though. But god damn did that turn dark fast.

I prefer to think it's pretty artistically amazing that they were able to take pre-existing sound clips and mish-mash them into a pretty natural sounding/feeling narrative.
I always hoped there is a small team in Valve dedicated to creating 100% perfect accent vocaloids of the TF2 characters.
if it were possible to create a vocaloid-type sound system that sounded like an actual human they probably would have made one like that already, rather than the autotuned digital-sounding ones we have right now. But I'm sure someone somewhere is working on it.

If they could do this, they would make $Texas selling that tech to tons of companies.
Normally I would be with you on that, but Valve has the resources to pull it off if it's possible.
Oh yeah? What piece of technology exists that Valve developed in house? :rotate:
Valve is a good company, but almost everything they've made a business out of they've bought from someone else. Obviously they make it into something awesome, but someone else came up with the basic tech.
As for speech synthesis, it's getting better all the time but it's still really hard. No one has yet produced a human voice that sounds 100% real, and there's legions of doctorates out there working on it.

Valve resources don't necessarily have to be in house.
But ultimately this is my hope for more entertaining youtube clips and not a solid belief of what they are actually investing in.

so, any word on another mid-week honc, now that I can actually attend?
unless you are scottish resistance demo on the last point of upward, and then it is reload simulator fortress 2
so many stickies
action pose
So blurbl and maybe Kupi were running around with full uber looking for heal targets
I took a screen of this dead sniper just sitting on a rock on my way to the front
and then core shot me in the head a split-second later
and it's a stupid Bot Server, so I did some training fighting against a team of like 5 or 4 actual guys against me by myself on a team of bots that wouldn't leave spawn
and then I dueled a pyro whose Bot Medic actually followed him the fuck around and healed him for a while
and just when I was about to give up because I'm not good enough to fight a W+M1 Pyro with a healer as a Scout
Motherfucking High Five drops.

The bots that wouldn't leave spawn were idler bots, I bet.
Set up to activate the 'k' button now and then. That's the thing valve did to discourage idlers, right?
Nothing worse than being a medic about to die from fire damage, running to the health pack, Pyro takes it 2 seconds before you get there, Pyro walks away without even putting you out and you dieing from it.
Also I just want to add how masterfully designed the last point on Upward is. It's one of those constructions that seems like it should give every advantage to the defense, and yet it's absurdly hard to defend. We certainly saw this when the map was new.. people hadn't figured it out yet and fights over the last point where boring slugfests.
I spent a lot of time dead last night because I was having a bad night, so I got to watch the contest a lot. Even the layout of the crates by the health kit are perfectly angled so that red has to come out from the turtle to get people off the cart.. there is not a single good angle from the spawn area you can use to clear the cart. You're basically forced to enter the line of fire that leads outside to defend.
Compare to the last point of Dustbowl where teams can literally stand on the point and hold M1.

This should be punishable by pillory. Some sort of tarring and feathering maybe. A stern face should fill your screen and explain why what you did was wrong.

Yeah, that's very true. I can't say I ever get that frustrated trying on the final point, attacking or defending. There's always a route I can take from either way and get into the action. Rather than tight choke point one or tight choke point two.
There was that time last friday when people kept getting mad at us blowing them up with sticky bombs.
They also kept walking into our clearly visible piles of sticky bombs, in ones and twos, for ten minutes. So I didn't pay it much heed, I gotta admit.
And then the same thing happened again last night
I'll admit, there were one or two times where I was all "hey guys we should maybe not attack one at a time OH SHIT THEY'RE ALL DEAD GET ON CART" *is exploded by stickybombs*
Though I think offense pulled off a win on Upwards for both teams on both nights, even though the attacking teams got some real tunnel vision at times.

If I recall last night at all (mean feat, given how much I drank), I'm pretty sure we blues took the last point after a great pitched battle, team switched, then barely managed to defend it. I think.
I should clarify, that I rarely get frustrated with Upward. And yes, it's the one-cart long payload map that ends in the building dropping into a pit.
Side note, I thought it was funny as hell how Burbl told me that being over-tired and drinking was probably not the best time to play Spy, and then I proceeded to top our team as it. Seriously, I was so out of it last night while we were playing, it was absurd that I was even awake at that point. I woke up at 3am, drove 2 hours and dropped Khaleesi/ Mrs Crash off at the airport at 5am, drove 2 hours to make it back in time for work at 7am (with five minutes to change) and worked a full day at my (manual labor) job. Being a person who normally goes to bed at 3am, it was kind of rough.
Sooo... this HONC thing. Can anybody show up, or do you have to be in the secret club? Is it ok if I'm hilariously bad at TF2?
Yep, password is in the OP so if it happens to be up, you've got it. We get a wide variety of skill levels on the server so (most) people don't take issue with any "bad" players. If they do I'll tell them to knock it off. It can be frustrating at first to play with us, since a lot of us have been playing since the game was released, but it's actually a really good way to learn fast. I've watched plenty of new people start off on our server

Anyone can play, there is a group we use to tell each other to get on the server but also anyone can join that. It's fine if you are bad. Also if there is a password on the server it is

Yeah I suppose that too.
I have 5 of said friends working on the next version...
(Ok 4 not counting me)

Blimey. That was pretty decent.

On the other hand, I was away from my computer because I was playing Saints Row 4 so it kinda evens out.
cause I came back and the server was empty
I went to play Special Delivery
and the server emptied out

I tried to use it on honc last night and nothing happened.
Yeah I mentioned it to 'Mavers last night. It might be related to the Death Run plugin somehow.

Upward is the one with one cart, not two, right?
