Hi guys - I just tried the game for the first time at my FLGS. OMG, it's so much fun! There aren't, numerically speaking, many things to do, but each decision is vitally important. For me it offers the most psychological play experience i've seen in a board game.

I love that the combat dice system offers depth and also avoids book-keeping and rules tracking that would happen if every unit had separately tracked guns, missiles, etc.

    Now to start buying everything...

Heavy Laser Cannons. Keep two B-Wings near the back of your forces. When you're close enough to engage, have them both angle diagonally inward so they can overlap fields of fire.

Ibtisam is pretty awesome with HLC and PTL.

Fire Control System - after you attack, get a free target lock! - is pretty cool, too.

And yes, I know the Imperial Aces pack is coming out. That will allow me to have four interceptors.

Thats a nice looking starter collection! It will be very cool if each fighter gets its own Aces pack. Gotta catch em all.

I'd also like to see some funkier missiles in one of the expansions to give Bombers and A-wings a small boost. In lore A-wings are supposed to have fantastic short range sensor jamming and even have the ability to fire in the rear arc. Ah if only. They are by far my favourite ship after Interceptors.

  • DarkPrimusDarkPrimus Registered User regular
Being able to fire in a rear arc is just what the A-Wing could use to make it more appealing. I really like how maneuverable it is but other than the ability to go fast it doesn't have a lot of hit points and doesn't shoot/dodge as well as the other ships, comparable to cost.

  • Gabriel_PittGabriel_Pitt Stepped in it Registered User regular
Where did the 'firing in the rear arc' thing come from, cause that was something they couldn't do in 92 or so when the first x-wing sim came out.

If I'm gonna go all the way...
It sports a pair of pivoting laser cannons on each wingtip.

Though I thought it only allowed them to aim up and down by 45 degrees, which would not have an effect on a 2d field like this game, and not a full 180.

Yeah. The A-wing's lasers are better represented by some advanced targeting shit in the forward arc, not by basically being a turret.

Perhaps what the A-wing needs is the kind of card that the FFG forums is currently suggesting for the TIE Advanced: 0pt title that adds a System Upgrade slot. A-wing with Sensor Jammer would be really nice, and both ship models could do a lot more with Advanced Sensors.

I just bought (and repainted) an A-wing and used it to good effect in its first game in three ways: running into the enemy ships and messing up their formations, dropping 4 damage from Cluster Missiles to take down a Bounty Hunter, and being the target of the last enemy ship while Han took him out. They're fragile but they've got the maneuverability to get where they need to be.

The Title card allowing systems upgrades for the A-wing would be fantastic. It would still be as fragile as an asthmatic Tie but with the tools to do any job with the right upgrades. I love them even with all their flaws.

As to the 'firing backwards' thing, it's mentioned in some of WEG early Star Wars RPG books and also the DK Star Wars cross sections book (2007). There may be other sources but my Star Wars knowledge is less than stellar. This from the DK book.
The ship is fitted with two laser cannons, fixed to unique swivel mounts that enable the cannons to fire in a 60 degree arc above and below horizontal. In addition, these mounts allow the lasers to be pivoted to fire behind the ship while it is still racing forward. More than on TIE pilot has met an unexpected fate after dropping onto an A-wings tail with the impression that the ship was a sitting target

Not turret fire as such, more a 90 degree fire arc to the rear with it's primary 2 dice weapons. Overpowered at current costs?

I enjoy that they had fun in that video but they butchered enough rules to bug me.

GG, have you checked your local gaming store to see if they have a night where they play this?

My LGS has told me they have got some of FFG's X-Wing Game Night kits. I am really excited, because (based on how the stuff has been selling) I will be able to meet a bunch of new people who I can then be able to arrange more matches with in the future. I love playing with the friends I am playing with right now, but I know that more people = more strategies and builds = more experience = better players all around.

  • AthenorAthenor Battle Hardened Optimist The Skies of HiigaraRegistered User regular
Awesome! X-wing seems to have died down around here. Not sure why... then again, I didn't get into the local X-wing scene as hard as the LCGs. I'm trying.. really trying.. to get some sort of organized play started, but my local store isn't putting up posters or helping with promotion.

I have thought of it. There is a perfect place in town that used to be a Christian book store that if I had the money I would buy in a heart beat. But I have no money, no credit, and no way of building my dream.

Thanks. I'm particularly fond of how the Y-wings turned out after drybrushing a grey basecoat and washing with Citadel Nuln Oil. I feel the Y-wing really deserves a some color variety to bring out the details, more than what's provided by 'tan with yellow stripes'.

I'm thinking of picking up another A-wing soon to take a more refined crack at the prototype color scheme.

I saw that cool stuff inc has A wings and TIE-I's on their daily sale today. Dunno if they still have stock, but nearly half off is a good price I'd think.

    My new Imperial list!
    Krassis Trelix — Firespray-31 36
    Heavy Laser Cannon 7

    Omicron Group Pilot — Lambda-Class Shuttle 21
    Gunner 5
    Darth Vader 3

    "Backstabber" — TIE Fighter 16

Academy Pilot — TIE Fighter 12

Strat is to position the Lambda and Firespray on opposite sides of the map and have them move to focus fire from long-range while the TIEs run interference. Either the opponent deals with the TIEs first and gets chewed up at range 3 by the big 'uns or they try to dash in to hit them and the TIEs chew on their butts. Biggest problem is the Lambda's lack of maneuverability, but as it's meant to slowly kill itself to inflict maximum damage I can accept that, plus putting an Engine upgrade on it means I couldn't run the second TIE.

And a Rebel list that I haven't gotten to try yet because I need more A-Wings:
    Roark Garnet — HWK-290 19
    Ion Cannon Turret 5
    Nien Nunb 1

    Green Squadron Pilot — A-Wing 19
    Swarm Tactics 2
    Concussion Missiles 4

    Green Squadron Pilot — A-Wing 19
    Swarm Tactics 2
    Concussion Missiles 4

    Green Squadron Pilot — A-Wing 19
    Swarm Tactics 2
    Concussion Missiles 4

Roark sits back and gives one of the A-Wings 12 Pilot Skill, and then they all spread the love amongst each other. They blow their missiles and hopefully kill some targets and then use their superior maneuverability to get into flanking shots at Range 1, still shooting before anyone else. Roark is the lynchpin to the whole build obviously, but since he can sit back at Range 3 for his ability it's not quite a glass jaw.
