My boss (who is female) wants us to go as snow white and prince charming.

With the obvious twist of me being snow white and her being the prince.

Not sure where to find a snow white dress for a 6'5" guy with linebacker shoulders.

Good guesses both. I've even done one of them before! But neither is correct, I'm afraid.

    Seriously

if you have access to a tan jacket and a briefcase, you could make a Faceless mask for a few bucks

although I would leave enough material at the back to slip the entire thing over my face for a seamless look

    easy.

so apparently H&M is selling a tan corduroy suit for about $150

it's a few years late but i'm seriously tempted to do a fantastic mr. fox costume (since my locks are not nearly flowing enough to pull a full anderson)

anyone got any leads on decent fox masks?

Those masks freak me the fuck out

I remember seeing pictures of them in history class and thinking whyyyy would a doctor wear that??

They didn't know what the fuck they were doing is why.

Bubonic Plague is a infection caused by bacteria and spread by fleas. But at the time they didn't even know bacteria were a thing! There were plenty of theories about what caused the plague, but they were mostly nonsense.

The ubiquitous Plague Doctor mask was worn by plague doctors (most of whom weren't actually doctors at all and had no medical training) to protect them from what they thought was causing the infection - Miasma. Basically they believed that the sickness was coming from inhaling "Bad Air" that came from rotting flesh or sewage. Towns that had lots of people sick with the plague were obviously besieged by this rotten air which everyone was breathing to make them sick.

The long beak structure in the mask was filled with aromatics - essentially dried flowers and other nice smelling stuff. The doctors were safe from the plague because they were breathing sweet smelling air instead of the bad air.

They treated patients by bleeding them and trying to fix their humors.

The Plague Doctor mask and costume is basically like a Hazmat suit from a time when people didn't know anything.

What I always found intriguing is that the plague doctor costume was, in some ways, actually effective at preventing the doctor from being infected. They waxed the capes that covered the whole outfit, which may have made it more difficult for fleas to stay on the clothing and thus preventing the wearer from being bitten. They also examined patients with canes, keeping themselves further away and thus also potentially away from the flea-ridden bed of the plague victim.

It's a really interesting intersection of being right for the wholly wrong reason. The waxed capes especially suggest to me that people associated fleas with plague enough to develop defenses against them.

That said, for these sort-of medical advances, there were plenty of bone-headed decisions, such as the aforementioned bleeding treatment, and the idea early in the plague years of moving infected patients to towns where no infections were present in order to take advantage of the clean air there. Of course, after the plague mysteriously cropped up in those towns the practice fell from favor and quarantine became more common.

Oh good. Someone made this thread before I had to. If you guys don't mind I want to post some of my costuming for this year.

So last year I built this.
    1348326018_zps6019cfe6.jpg

This year the brothers of my sister-in-law want to Ghostbust with me so I've been collecting them the needed gear for basic uniforms. I will then distribute my PKE Meter and Ghost Trap between them so I don't have to carry it all.

I am also in the process of upgrading the lights in the wand portion of the proton pack. This is the current interior.
    1379971696_zps379b0cc2.jpg

The circuit board at the top middle is the sound board. Everything connects to that. The battery, speaker, lights, and switches. The big mess of cables currently run to all the lights and switches in the wand. They are all pretty much jury-rigged to work. All those wires are being replaced by a single ribbon cable that plugs into a nice empty socket on the sound board.

The blue box is just a mounting block for the lights on the pack.

Here is a close up of the sound board.
    1379971694_zps7380d9d6.jpg

The audio in plug at the bottom allows me to plug in my iphone into it and play music out of the pack speaker. Like the Ghostbuster's theme. One cool thing is that the sound board has a volume dial that extends out the back and through the black metal slab, called the motherboard buy GB builders as everything is attached to it. That dial controls the pack noises, but the music from my iphone has a seperate volume so I can be playing music while the pack is also making noise.

So at this point I have to rip out all the existing wires and lights from the wand.
    1379971701_zpsa5ada561.jpg

Here is the current board for the wand lights in situ. It has all been removed. The new one will be much smaller and I will hopefully have enough spare room to install a small motor to create a vibration effect.

I am also upgrading various attachment points. Where previously bolts were screwed into the resin, I've now sunk brass threaded inserts.

I love Halloween so much! The last time that I trick or treated was my senior year of high school. Me and my friends got told off by a lady about how we were too old to trick or treat and that we should be saving the candy for the little kids.

    PFFFFFFFT.

I REALLY miss dressing up for Halloween and I wish that I knew the type of people to have awesome Halloween parties. But this year I might go back to volunteering as an actor at Fright Town, which is a super awesome haunted house in Portland. You get hella cool make up and get to scare the shit out of people, which is always fun!
