Yeah; Vulkan, the painted thanator(s), gal vorbak, the inferno gun/gigantor powersword variant knight, all pretty amazing.
And the triaros armoured conveyor… is there a vehicle that is more warhammer?

You never see IG players talking about using mortars. (The same with heavy bolters, an iconic weapon of 40K.)
A few editions ago, my dream was to make an all guess range list, with mortars as ranging units for dropping the Griffin and Basilisk shots on target.
I may change my list posted previously to replace the heavy bolters with autocannons.
EDIT: But I feel like the HQ and troops, which add up to about 520 points, unless I start substituting meltas or plasma guns for grenade launchers, makes for a good core. Does it seem like a CCS, 2 PCS and 4 IS's are enough?

I'm so torn on what I want to do with my guard. I'm worried that 2 platoons just isn't going to be enough, especially since they are all without transport. I think I've got enough juicier targets to draw fire but I'm concerned.
You never see heavy bolters because they usually ridiculously over costed for what you get compared to weapons with similar costs, missile launcher and it were same cost in the only SM dex for example. Same with plasma pistols (which the old ig book got right at 10 pts, why you only ever saw them taken on IG guys & special characters from other books that had them by default). Same with infantry carried heavy flamers befor the new IG book (at 20pts fuck no, 10pts it's a good option).
IG mortars are actually really nice weapons (great snipers actually) & limit the problems of heavy weapon teams (don't need line of sight). Cheap, useful, but same problem as above made worse since IG units are so cheap I could take them, or I could drop a couple points some where else and add another tank or a squad with plasmas.

I've never understood why GW still prices plasma pistols like pistols can shoot twice

We could fill a forum with speculation as to why GW does any of the things it does.

Or we could sum it all up in one character which takes up a lot less server space: $
Like making a totally awesome new model kits, then having idiotic rules for the things so no one buys them?
No... we could still fill a forum as to why GW does the things they do, because if they wanted to just make money, then they've certainly gone in more than one opposite directions.

I want to know why the only way to get Chaos Cultists outside of the "filler" five man pack is to go to the secondary market and buy Dark Venegeance Cultists.
Also, I'm totally going to do two 21-man Nurgle Cult units, backed up by a couple 7-man Plague Marine squads and a FDP. Might throw in a few Heralds and some Plaguebearers as allies. Screw it, I think it will be fun and fluffy. Now I just need to figure out how the hell to get it put together and painted before some cool event to take it to and get blown off the table by a bunch of Helldrakes or Knights.

I really wish I could use mortars. They seem like a pretty iconic Valhallan weapon. In fact, in the first article Gav Thorpe wrote about the Valhallans, it mentions using mortars and almost sounds like when you bought the squad, it came with a flamer and mortar automatically.
@echo - I've got a set of grav guns from spellcrow, shipping took forever, but the models were pretty solid. Not the best aftermarket bitz I've bought, but good enough.

so uh, i've got a GW store in cleveland that's running tournaments
i'd like to spend under $200 and get oh about 500 points i can whip out and just splatter nerds.
guide me, battle brothers.
everything i know about 40k i know because of dawn of war 2
Wait until a few weeks after the next edition (May 24th). Due to GW's talents, a single poorly worded sentence may change the balance of the whole game.
Currently Tau are the top army.
Yeah, mostly Taudar, I guess. Ain't no way you're getting a 500pt combo army for $200 though.
I guess Eldar and Tau are roughly tied? I keep hearing different opinions, but Tau have been worse for me.
Yeah, its basically an updated vraks renegades army list from years ago. So, mutant rabble, chaos commissars, khorne ogryns, and a few charismatic marines stirring the pot, if it's anything like the old lists.
What's the current wisdom on building Tau missile-bastard suits? I'm not seeing any point in giving them plasma rifles instead of the SMS, but maybe I'm missing something. How about giving them a seeker missile for some fire support when they don't have something immediately in front of them?
If you didn't want to get smacked with 'em, you shouldn't have given them to me.

I counted up how many models I need for my 520 point troops and HQ list. It turns out I'm not too far from having a painted army. I'll still probably paint some more to replace the older, not-as-well painted models, but just to get painted models on the field, I only need to paint about 11 more troopers, my company commander, 2 lieutenants, 3 sergeants, 5 voxcasters, 5 grenade launchers, 1 Chimera turret, and about 4 autocannon teams. That's still a bit of work, don't get me wrong. But it's not having to paint all the models in my possession. And I could get around 500 points done, and my HQ and troops choices out of the way.
I still need to find and buy one more Valhallan voxcaster mini though. It would suck to have almost all of them, but the one. I'm also counting it already as one I need to paint. Are the voxcasters really worth it? Orr would I be better spending those points elsewhere? That's around 30 points.

My tau experience indicates that there are very few situations where taking SMS is a bad choice.
-Prescience is still primaris, but is now 2 warp charges. Also, eerybody but orks can get divination.
-sanctic powers are basically the GK powers, with a few extra goodies, like a Str D vortex blast.
-oodles of small tweaks, that I have to compare from the old book. lots of witchfires got better, and a lot of powers just got more streamlined.
-Forboding states "ballistic skill 1" for overwatch, so I think that whole -2 BS was bunk.
-scriers gaze now also lets you redraw a tactical objective card. sorta cool. (I'm assuming in addition to the one you'd normally be able to redraw at the start of the turn)
-force weapons are now activated in the psychic phase, like any other power. Instead of after wounding something. So plan ahead?
-some new telekine powers: levitate (unit moves 12 inches) and a Str10 Ap1 barrage large blast.
-iron arm gives a flat +3 to strength, toughness, and has smash. Warpspeed is likewise +3 to init and attacks.
-life leech can restore wounds to nearby units, not just the caster.
-no more puppet master :C now there's shrouding, which just gives... shrouding.
-halucination got waaaaay less stupid. It's now: pinning test/ -1 WS, BS, I, /the entire unit beats up the unit's sergeant

I wonder if the re-introduction of the psychic phase will lead to another Dark Millenium in the vein of fantasy's Storm of Magic.

I'm not used to playing armies this fragile.

Guess I'll have to wait on the upcoming lost and damned army list thats supposed to be showing up soon.
500 pts? Do you know a lot of people that play at that level, because it's unusually low for pick up games.
Is that supposed to be a Traitor Guard supplement, essentially? Because I could totally see that.
