[M&M3e] Blast Off! - Chapter 1: Turtling

edited November 2013 in Critical Failures
Welcome to the year 2099!

The year is 2099. The place is New Amsterdam, located on the Titan moon orbiting Jupiter. Home of the United Aliance of Planets (UAP).

Thanks to the creation of the FTL Drive, mankind has reached to out to the stars. Out there they found a universe teaming with life, thriving civilizations, and terrible dangers. And who volunteered to be the first to brave space? Why the heroes, of course! Men and women gifted with abilities beyond those of average citizens. Working together they forged new alliances with alien species, terraformed uninhabited planets, and offered the greatest examples mankind had to offer. Where heroes become the greatest example Earth has to offer, villians have become it's most reviled. A handful of truly diabolical villians have even subjugated entire civilizations and planets under thier tyrannical will.

While exploration of the universe is still on high priority, it has since slowed to crawl as the UAP has become bloated with new species from across the universe. These days only the absolute best and brightest heroes are sent out on interstellar explorations. Heroes today are often hired by megacorporations and governments to protect their assets and also as good press by providing public services. When two or more heroes are receive sponsorship from the same client, they often form a team to better coordinate their efforts. The youngest heroes still dream of reaching for the stars, while the elder statesmen are satisfied doing good works. Entry into the exploration program is tough and you'll have to prove yourself worthy of representing your civilization among the stars.

Blast Off! is a retro-futuristic campaign using the Mutants and Masterminds 3e ruleset, which has a SRD available for reference. It will feature the standard superhero action-adventure and drama along side retro-future themes and images. Characters will being the game as fledging heroes or veterans looking to make thier mark and join the ranks of heroes choosen to represent Earth for the intergalactic exploration program. Do you have what it takes to present the best of humanity?

What is Retro-Futurism?

Per wikipedia:
Retro-futurism (adjective retro-futuristic or retro-future) is a trend in the creative arts showing the influence of depictions of the future produced prior to about 1960.[1] Characterized by a blend of old-fashioned "retro" styles with futuristic technology, retro-futurism explores the themes of tension between past and future, and between the alienating and empowering effects of technology. Primarily reflected in artistic creations and modified technologies that realize the imagined artifacts of its parallel reality, retro-futurism has also manifested in the worlds of fashion, architecture, design, music, literature, film, and video games.

Retro-futurism calls back to the age of innocence, before the era of pessimistic visions of the future like Bladerunner or The Matrix. It is a backlash against the dismal imagery and mood of modern science fiction, trading dreary trenchcoats and dank hallways for colorful rockets and gleaming skyscrapers. This is the future as envision by the WWII generation - filled with hope, wonder, and excitement - re-envisioned by the new generation, embedded a deep sense of nostalgia and keen eye towards self-awareness. Think science fiction stretching back from the era of Jules Verne to Fritz Lang's Metropolis all the way to Buck Rogers, but with a sense of irony.

Comic books have had a strong hand in this vision of this future, from Marvel's The Fantastic Four to DC's Legion of Superheroes. Kirby's legacy in particular has had a strong impact on the visuals of retro-futurism. Examples of the genre in modern comics include Mister X by Toronto-base Vortex, Dean Motter's Vertigo title Terminal City and Warren Ellis's Wildstorm project Plantery. Kurt Buseik's Astro City and Alex Ross's Kingdom Come also share many of the visual elements and themes of the retro-futurism genre, as does the Batman: The Animated Series and the DC animated universe that followed.

Character Submission Guidelines

* I am looking for three-to-five brave individuals eager to explore space in shiny rocketships.
* All characters submitted must be standard Power Level 10.
* You may create a unique alien race to play, but I will need details regarding their society, values, biology, etc. I don't need an almanac, just some minor details will do.
* Please provide a backgrund for your hero. What is his or her origin story? Does he or she have an archenemy?
* Feel free to embellish your background and add to the existing world. I'm a big fan of player agency. It's a big universe out there and I want you to contribute.
* Please answer the following question:
1) How long has your character been in New Amsterdam and why is he or she there?
2) If you played in "And Justice for All . . . ", does your character have any relations to those previous heroes?
3) Does your character have the sponsorship of a megacorp or government?

I will probably leave submissions up for at least a week while I do some more worldbuilding.

Rolls and Out of Character Dialogue

All rolls for this game will be done using Geth and must be posted in limegreen. Out of character chatter must also be posted in limegreen and should be relegated to the bottom of any in character post. I realize this isn't always practical, so this is not a hardfirm rule but rather a general guideline. I will not be creating a seperate OOC thread though, so it's important that the limegreen'ing OOC be maintained.

Example:
This is what my character is doing!

"This is what my character is saying."

This is out of character dialogue.

Geth roll XdY+Z for what my character is doing

How often am I required to post?

Ideally I'd like to see at least a post a day, though I know this isn't always a possibility.

Our heroes...

    Prominent New Amsterdam Locations
    City Hall
The capital building for the city of New Amsterdam, were the business of local governance is attented to. Mayor Sheffield's office and the offices of the many members of city council are located here. In the building next door to City Hall is the Court House.

    The Cloud District
Above the city skyline are a few estates propolled and suspended by manipulating Titan's magnetic leylines, appearing to be floating on gigantic silver plates. Most of these estates are owned by the absolute richest residents of New Amsterdam, though a few are available for events such as weddings, bar mitzvahs, and retirement parties.

    Hall of Heroes
Within the lobby modeled after classical Greak architecture, with many collumns and polished granite acloves, are bronze statues of celebrating the heroes from a time before FTL travel was possible. Moving beyond the lobby is a vast museum displaying many preserved costumes and artifacts belonging to those heroes. Walking through one feels a sense of marvel and wonder. It gives the impression that this must be how the Greeks felt upon first witnessing the Pantheon.

    General Hospital
No one is quite sure if this impressive hospital's name is a joke or if the board of directors is even aware of the connoctation. The building itself stretches sixty stories tall and takes up an entire city block. The hospital sponsors a number of heroes who run a rotating staff for security and to bring in the most critical patients faster than conventional travel would allow.

    Gosling Park
Gosling Park is a near flawless recreation of New York's Central Park back on Earth. With it's ampitheatre, zoo, and many other frighteningly identical features, the park is nearly as busy as the Financial District that surrounds it. It's a favorite place for young people to go on dates and for parent's to take their children to play during the day. At night, however, the park takes on a more sinister veneer and everyone knows there are some locations you don't go near when the sun's set.

    Joe's Cafe
Styled after a 1950's dinner, the Joe's Cafe has become one of the favorite off-hour stomping grounds for young heroes. No one if quite sure why this happened, except that if you want a good cheap cup of joe or piping hot burger off the grill you can't do much better than Joe's.

    New Amsterdam Underground
New Amsterdam's metro system is the envy of the universe - efficient, cheap, and extreme fast. You can make it clear across New Amsterdam in as little as ten minutes via the metro. However a number of urban legends have cropped up surrounding the tunnels and sewer systems that criss-cross the metro lines. Everything from alligators in the sewage lines to a race of disturbing mutant cannibals have been rumored to exist in the underground.

    Police Precinct No. 135
Because of the incredible expense involved with holding such individuals, Precinct No. 135 located in the New Harlem district is the only jail capable of holding "super villains" before transfer to a more secure max security prison. Technical Industries developed the technology which effectively nullifies any extraordinary powers a prisoner may have by supressing their sources. While the system itself was donated to the precinct by Technical Industrials, it requires vast amounts of power to function thus incurring the huge expensive involved.

    Technical Industrials, LLC
Technical Industrials were the first developers of FTL travel and one of the leaders in advanced robotics. The building systems are all maintained by Maria, the A.I. developed by founder Dr Lewis. She is responsible for maintaining the elevators, air conditioning, power, communications, and many more. Maria is friendly and polite, offering assistance to anyone who appears to have gotten lost in the massive two-hundred story building. While Maria maintains the building's essential systems, the other A.I. Dr. Lewis developed, Edison, maintains both the security and entertainment functions. Edison controls a small fleet of security droids as well as the cafeteria droids, janitor bots, vending machines, etc.

    UAP Building
Home of the United Alliance of Planets, the UAP Building plays host to most of the intergalactic politics and deal brokering between civilizations, modeled after the Earth's own United Nations. The building itself is an architectural wonder, with brilliant glass wondows surrounding the exterior base which tappers up to the tip at forty stories tall. While most of the building is not open to the public, citizens are invited to come visit the public areas such as the top of the spire and the surrounding metilucolously kept park.

    Important New Amsterdam Residents
    Andrew Jonas
Media mogul and trillionaire, Andrew Jonas controls the strongest media conglomeration in the known universe. His empire is based out of New Amsterdam's New Broadcast Media (NBM) Tower, were he creates a central narrative to distribute throughout the galaxy. No matter how you receive your news from NBM, whether phonefeed, televised, holographic or even the slowly returning print media, you can expect to hear a consistent message from his enterprises.

    Mayor Jessica Sheffield
Mayor Sheffield began her term as a populist reformer come to clean up City Hall. This, however, never came to fruitition as it quickly became politics as usual in the Mayor's Office. Most New Amsterdam natives agree that Sheffield's administration has been a failure and her chances at re-election for a second four-year in the November elections are not projecting well. Her campaign headquarters, located in the Allentown middle-upper class distriction, has been working over time to improve the Mayor's image as a fighter whose efforts have been stymied by a beauracratic, corrupt city council.

    Mercury
One of the most well-regarded heroes in New Amsterdam, Mercury's signature blue and white streaks accross the city day or night. She wears a blue suit and white lightning spandex with aviator googles and a vintage bomber jacket from the Korean War. Mercury is currently sponsored by General Hospital, which gives her no end of giggles to announce, as a first respondent, arriving on the most critical accident scenes and stablizing victims before an ambulance can arrive.

    Oranguman
Venerable and practically ancient, the Oranguman has become something of an elder statesman for super villains. His genetic alterations have given him an extended lifespan, though his red fur has behind to grey around the temples and his backside. In the last thrity years, Oranguman claims to have reformed and commited himself to the defense of "poor misguided souls who deserve a fair trail," becoming a public defendent for criminals and terrorists with powers. If he is still up to nefarious schemes, the monkey-man has gotten much better at covering his own tracks. Despite his record as a criminal and terrorist, the Oranguman is well-regarded in high society and is a member of more than a few private fraternal lodges.

    The Undermensch
The Undermensch is a curious little fellow who lives in the sewers, calling himself a freedom fighter for an oppressive group of people who live below in the New Amsterdam underground. He wears rags and is covered in filth, but has an impressive talent for juryrigging horrible contraptions from debris he finds in the sewers and tunnels. He is widely consider by the hero community to be a nutter - a potentially dangerous nutter, but a nutter none-the-less.

    Dr. Zorbok
Dr. Zorbok is one of the leading researchers at Technical Industrials. As the first alien species to graduate from MIT, Zorbok has lead many projects in a variety of different fields and is well-regarded by his peers as one of the leaders in nanite technology. As an Alpha Centauran, the good doctor has blue skin and zero body hair, as well as two fleshy antenae that provide an additional spacial sense by feeling the movement of the air surrounding him

    Important Persons In the Universe
    Captain Stupendous
When the hero community looks for a role model they immediately think of Captain Stupendous. Captain Stupendous has braved dangerous world, shoke hands with new alien species as Earth's ambassador and discover more forms of life than any other hero, living or deceased. With his trusty blaster, incredible strength, and winning charm, Captain Stupendous is Earth's favorite son.

    Ouroboros
At the farthest reaches in the darkest parts of the galaxy, lies a hellish planet ruled by a seemingly eternal tyrrant named Ouroboros. Having bent and shaped the landscape and people to his vision, the planet he named after himself is perhaps only a husk of its former self. Ouroboros, through his monster treatment over many generations and millenia, has breed a monster people. More beast than man and utterly loyal to him. The galaxy fears the day when Ouroboros his lead his monsterous race across the cosmos to conquer.

    Mysteries & Legends
    The Triferreans
Spoken of only in hushed terms throughout the galaxy for fear of drawing them back from the darkness of space, many species have legends regarding a seemingly unstoppable force of conquest and extermination. The name of this nightmare force, though it varies slightly for dialogue, is always the Triffereans. If so many species have the same legend, there must be some truth tying them together. How is it possible that such a force could exist but then leave no trace throughout the galaxy? It was as though they began conquering then simply left known space, but such a thing should be impossible. Shouldn't it? The mystery of the Triffereans has been one that has puzzled anthropolgists and archealogists for decades with no concensus in site.

    Z
Z is a mysterious being who witnesses claim has been able to bend the laws of time and space. Varying in appearance Z is near universally described as some kind of trickster who delights in pranks and befuddling galactic travelers. The mystery of Z has been written off as crazed conspiracy theory by serious explorers and scientists - much like the alien encounters of the late 20th to early 21st centery.

Registering timid interest. I've never played M&M before but do have access to the books, if that won't be a problem?

    Not a problem at all.

Edit: In fact, it's not a problem even if you don't have the book since the game is on OGL and has an SRD available.

What's the difference between 2e and 3e? I've played 2e once or twice a few years ago, so I might be willing to dive back into this.

Biggest difference is a change to core stat values. There are now 8 core stats, with ranged attacks and melee attacks becoming core stats instead of being a separate value.

They also got rid of the 1-20 stat value with coupled modifier and now you just have a modifier that ranges from -5 to +20 to represent you're abilities.

I'm not sure I explained that well but they were good changes. Trimmed a lot of fat off the game.

Powers are largely unchanged from 2nd to 3rd.

Okay I need to come up with a character now...

Something other than my usual kind of choice, perhaps!

I'm interested. Just not sure what I'd play.

I have one idea that I've always liked. It stems from Prey by Michael Crichton, if anybody's read the book you probably get what I'm talking about. <- I'll be honest. this is the idea I like best. and would most interested to play.

If that doesn't work, a Flash Gordon knockoff could be fun.

That or a Robot. Robots are cool.

Edit: Or since I like playing genius characters, playing a guy who's more brawn would be fun and a change of pace. Roll that into the robot idea above for extra funtimes.

Edit: Or an alien. I could be Alienman.

Looked up Prey. I don't see any reason it wouldn't work. It's still the future even if it just looks old.

Any of those seen like fine concepts.

Motivation Thrills-The next adventure is always the best.
Phobia -Commitment. Always the lone wolf before, he tends to act on his own and never ask for help.

Brash, Reckless, Arrogant, a generous lover. These are the words Dash Janson would use to describe himself, as the words used by others are not fit to print. However, with a combination of nerves of steel and incredible ability to handle the stick (not a euphemism) Dash has become the go to pilot and hero for dangerous supply runs.

An independent contractor, Dash has no strict connection to any Megacorp, and he likes it that way. An orphan, Dash has never had a strong tie with anyone, seeing it as a weakness for others to exploit. The other children always seemed to hold him back, afraid to climb the roof, or nick some Stellar bars from the headmaster's desk. He couldn't understand why anyone would hold back when there is so much of the world to experience.

At the moment he's in New Amsterdam, in between jobs, looking for work that seems most likely to have everything go wrong. They not only paid the best, but they were always the most fun. He wants an interstellar gig, to reach to the boundaries of space. Seeing something no one else ever has, what could be better? However, those jobs were hardest to come by, with only the biggest named heroes really getting to the wild unknown. But Dash has had plenty of fun on precarious mining rigs unearthing the volatile plasma gems, or sneaking valuable med supplies through Lord Dreadicon's sector of space. He was sure there would be similar here, although being land bound for 3 days has made him itchy.

As for why Privateer? Well, partly it is the independence attached to the word, the lawless nature associated with it. Partly it is to give Dash some decompress time. While Privateer is easy to remember, simple pilot Dash isn't such a big name and can have a brew and get in a card game without it getting on the info-stream. [His brews and card games often end in fight for some reason.] Partly, it is to keep the heat off between missions. He learned this the hard way, running a short cut through pirate infested space. His ship was boarded by Horricrux Mange, and his crew had a firefight to keep the pirates from taking control. Prying the jet off an escape pod, Dash had the bright idea of turning himself into a projectile, pushing the dread pirate through a nearby airlock and breaking the siege. However, Mange was a species that could survive in a vacuum, and has since sworn revenge on Dash. As his next three shipments had been hit by pirates even in relatively civil areas, work started to dry up. So Dash called in a friend to whip up a persona that would throw off the attacks and get some work. So far,so good.

Privateer dresses in a Crimson, double breasted suit, with a black domino mask. Standing 5' 9" and 155 lbs, he's average build with a strong chin and jet black hair. His jet is the size of a standard backpack and extraordinarily light weight, and his handy blaster is always at his side. Dash tends toward simple earth tones.

Kyle stands 83rd in line for the Crown of Hope, but the Royal Family of Hope has long maintained that as good as any bodyguard can be, it's best for any potential heirs to be able to protect themselves. Sadly their attempts to add exotic powers to the bloodline has been rather hit or miss. This has lead to some members of the nobility having exotic powers and others left mundane. Exotic Nobility is expected to live a life of military service in one of the various warrior orders. Kyle has spent his life trying to figure out how to avoid that. He doesn't want to be a warrior. He'd wants to travel and see the stars. For now he's been sent to New Amsterdam in hopes that exposure to the cosmopolitan capital will make him get over the wanderlust he seems to express. So far he's learned that simply seeing New Amsterdam for six months isn't enough. There is a big, wide galaxy out there.

Full Name with titles: K'ylmartholma Makokman Stonera the III, Third Duke of Stone, Fifth Duke of Aloma, Hereditary Warrior of Silence, Defender of the Crown, Speaker of the Great Heartstone, Viscount of the Pass, and Keeper of the Fool of Darkness.

    Weight: 340 lbs
    Age: 25
    Skin Color: Midnight Blue
    Hair Color: Green
Race: Virtuian (In the grand Science Fiction tradition they are basically Humans but with blue body paint applied.)

He can usually be found wearing white jumpsuit with a green stripe down the middle. Fins run along the arm of each jumpsuit, intended to make flying easier for him. He can come off as a mixture of pompous and hayseed. He's a member of hereditary nobility with all of the privilege that comes with it. But Virtuia is a bit of a rural backwater by UFP standards. Tech level isn't radically behind but behind cutting edge.

Let me know if I've wandered away from what you were looking for.

Professoraptor is a dinosaur of unknown genus, frozen in ice around 300 million years ago. Due to the infusion of spooky cosmic rays from space into the ice the creature was not only perfectly preserved, but also underwent a radical transformation of the brain which enhanced its feeble reptilian intelligence by many orders of magnitude.

In the modern day the thawed out Professoraptor uses its prodigious capabilities mostly on borderline nefarious Super Science machinations, using self-engineered robotic exoskeletal gauntlets to compensate for having opposable thumbless hands. What it used to build the gauntlets is a mystery to all but Professoraptor.

As a side project, Professoraptor likes to don a selection of its devastating Super Science devices and hit New Amsterdam to fight some crime. The feelings and emotions of a cold-blooded creature such as Professoraptor make it hard to fathom the motivations for such do-goodery, but whatever the case many of the citizens of New Amsterdam are glad to have it working against the villains, rather than with them.

The personality of the Professoraptor is erratic at best. While it definitely throws its lot in with the heroes on the side of good, its ridiculously high levels of intelligence coupled with its unfathomable reptilian thought processes create a difficult (at best) dinosaur to work with.

Presently, Professoraptor finds itself pursuing a potential job opportunity at prospective employer Technical Industrials, LLC. Hoping to gain extensive usage of the Megacorp's state of the art facilities the mutant dinosaur is heading to their imposing 200 story to submit its, rather inane, resume for candidacy.

If at all possible I'd like to keep the Sciencycle, but I can take or leave the lab depending on whether Mikey (how do you link names with spaces in them, I've never been able to work it out :P) sees it appropriate to have a hardened lab on a spaceship. Also I'm thinking Professoraptor will get sponsorship from Technical Industrials, LLC if/when he begins working for them. Finally, here's a quick thing I drew of Professoraptor cos I like drawing dinosaurs (I have no scanner).

EDIT: Got rid of the lab and boosted my defenses a little

Again, I'm new to 3e, so tell me if I went over the power limits or what-have-you. Basically, he punches people into submission while being pretty much unkillable.

Paul Bartlett, the man who jumped out of an airlock to save a dying girl's kitten. The man who held open a collapsing mine shaft to save the Underground Orphanage, causing him to be trapped a mile under ground for three weeks. The man who was left for dead on the Martian hellscape, naked, for six months, only to make his way back to his captors to teach them the meaning of acceptance and forgiveness.

Truly, Paul Bartlett would be the greatest hero of his time... if only it weren't all scripted.

A cunning and conniving business man and entertainer, Bartlett was the pioneer of reality television. He captivated every household for nearly a decade of chart-topping shows like "Planet Swap", "Real Housewives of Mars", and "Make a Wish... In Space". He was considered a mogul, philanthropist, humanitarian and an extra-terrestrialarian; he had everything a man could want and more. That changed, however, when his integrity was called in to question. The charity he was championing was found to be diverting funds from their Martian-aid program to an asteroid mining operation, causing a complete boycott on Bartlett's name and products. Bartlett eventually had his name cleared (he wasn't actually aware of the double-dealing), but the damage had been done; his name was tarnished, his contracts were cut, and he was forced to sell the rights to his shows at bottom-dollar.

That was then, but this is now. In an attempt to resurrect his own brand, Bartlett is trying to get a Hero gig to capture the hearts and minds of little children (the most lucrative demographic) everywhere in the universe. Maybe even help some people out, if they're not too far out of the way. Or if it'll make a good syndication.

Physically, Bartlett is thirty-something white man with buzzed brown hair; he's tall, and only slightly muscular. In reality, Paul has barely aged a day for every year he's been alive and can lift small buildings. Paul has always gone to lengths to keep his powers hidden somewhat, in order to make his heroic feats all the more heroic. Only his camera crew actually knows that Paul lost eight fingers, a foot, and actually died saving that kitten; all the viewers at home saw was clever editing.

Oh my god you guys are making it as difficult as possible for me to only choose five players. That's four incredible submissions so far. With knowning destroyah87 and Solar, both still having outstanding submissions, this is going to be tough.

A washed-up reality tv star? A blue space prince? A hubris-filled Buck Rogers? A freaking science raptor? Oh god!

I probably won't have something up until tomorrow evening.

Tonight is hanging out with my Thursday rpg group and I can't stat out a character at work obviously.

Depending on how long I have to sit, I could try to have something sooner, but Friday is the better bet.

    BACKGROUND
Sara Kagemiya grew up in the lap of luxury. A spoiled kid who wanted for nothing, she marinated her brilliant mind in Japanese pop culture from the end of the prior century. When Hiro Kagemiya died in a shuttle malfunction on a business trip Sara was left with an entire MegaCorporation in her lap and no idea how to run it.

Luckily she won the genetic lottery. Pretty, smart, and utterly saturated with drive and energy, Sara took hold of KageCorp and drove it to the stars, seeking new sources of energy to drive the latest in modern robotic technology. KageCorp profits soared and the young CEO was the talk of the town. Everyone marveled at her ability and accomplishments.

Her life was, in a word... BORING! What's the point of being stupid rich if you can't put it to some REAL use? Seeing the potential for excitement and real adventure, Sara put her mind to work to make REAL change. For one year sequestered away in thirteen different top secret labs are the component technologies that would comprise Project Toku...

    APPEARANCE
Sara is singular and unmistakable, tall and beautiful and brilliant. She dresses in the height of fashion in many styles dating all the way back to the end of the 20th century. She prefers to keep her hair styled in a cute bleached blonde bob usually tipped in some fantastic mix of rainbow colors.

Ultimaranger is the epitome of cool: all sleek form fitting armor in silvery pink, accented with blue, purple and red.

Ok, so I actually have two submissions I'm working on. One is an idea I had from the start, the other is an idea that struck me this week and won't leave. So without further ado...

I'm working on the stats for both Gleep only, I'll have to leave them unfinished tonight probably. Here's what I've got so far.
    Gestalt
    Background
The being known as Gestalt is the result of a terrible lab accident. Dr. Sanders was a brilliant nano-roboticist working with self-repairing, self-replicating, formable nanites. The idea was to create something that could be reconfigured into any form as needed and be repaired by feeding more energy or matter into it. The applications would have been limitless, from home furniture to space exploration. But a loss of containment and programming malfunction resulted in Dr. Sanders being consumed and absorbed by the nanites. The terrible accident resulted in the birth of an artificial intelligence from the resultant fusion of human brain and nanite programming. Taking the name Gestalt, this new being is still discovering its abilities and limitations. Though it has all of Dr. Sanders memories and much of his personality, it has chosen to not identify itself as Dr. Sanders. Instead, it's chosen to build a new life, separate and distinct from the Doc's.

    Appearance
The form he uses as a default is based roughly on the human form. His body is a vague humanoid form and completely black, the skin looking something like carbon fiber or a hard rubber. His face has the same shape as a human, but no mouth, and only the shape of ears or a nose. The glowing yellow eyes-shaped lights are only there to keep his form from looking too spooky. Well, it's a start.

His most natural form is a roiling mass of nanites that looks like graphite dust. As each individual nanite is able to move under its own power, he can take any form ranging from solid through through gas. He's able to reconfigure his structure at will, to be stronger than a gorilla one minute or flying like an eagle the next.

    Gleep
    Background
Gleep is an alien. Did I mention they have no bones, skin, or anything recognizable as an organ? To human biology, they're like giant amoebas. It's also important to note that they're not sentient. What little is known about them suggests that they bumble along the water's surface or floor until they bump into something edible or something edible bumps into them. It's been claimed there's nothing they can't eat and one of the games for people stationed on the wet dark planet where they are found is to put that claim to the test. So far, the amoeboids have eaten everything thrown at them.

But back to Gleep. Gleep isn't like any other amoeboid. For one, he's sentient. Nobody, not even Gleep, really knows how he gained sentience. His first memory is of looking at the sunrise and admiring the colors. From then on, he spent most days exploring the planet and eating anything that crosses his path. Though in truth, his life was pretty boring. The boredom ended the day he was taken as a sample by a routine scientific survey. Shipped off planet for further study, Gleep was poked and prodded and deemed an utterly normal representative member of his species. Still, no reason to waste a good experimental subject, the scientists continued experimenting on the puddle. That is, until intern took it in her head that Gleep might be more then he seemed. She worked to prove that Gleep was in-fact intelligent and possibly even sentient.

Through trial and error, she learned that Gleep was sentient and he learned that, unique as he was among his own kind, he wasn't alone. There were other thinking creatures in the universe, which was bigger then he could imagine.

Currently, he's on New Amsterdam to be exposed to new cultures and species. For a puddle of slime, he is an enormously curious creature. Given this and his drive to find or create children like himself, joining the intergalactic exploration program was a no-brainer.

    Appearance
In his normal form, he looks like a puddle of snot. A moving puddle of snot. And he wonders why normal humans find this unnerving? When piloting his synth-suit he looks like a grey robot laced with green tubes of liquid. In reality, the green tubes are Gleep himself and he's controlling the humanoid machine by flexing and contracting himself. And yes, the solid-color green eyes are what you think they are too.

The suit gives him the ability to fly as well as boosting his speed and strength greatly.

Stats (Needs a bit of tweaking. And I may have miscalculated some of the points. I'll look these over again tonight.): Tweaking done. And it gives me more points while still allowing for some fun stuff.
Motivation: Building a Legacy: As the only one of his kind, Gleep is concerned about the future. If he doesn't find a way to breed, procreate or otherwise multiply, his race dies with him.
Complications: Powersuit: The humanoid suit is what gives him access to increased speed and strength and lets him fly. If he can’t get inside it, Gleep is just a puddle of goo.
One of a Kind: As far as he knows, Gleep is unique. Every other member of his species is non-sentient goop.

    Abilities (72 points):
    Strength 1, Stamina 2, Agility 5, Dexterity 10, Fighting 10, Intellect 2, Awareness 5, Presence 1

    Initiative: 9

    Defenses (7 points):
    Dodge 10, Fortitude 4, Parry 10, Toughness 5, Will 5

    Skills (3 points):
    Insight 2(+7), Perception 4(+9)

    Advantages (9 points):
Accurate Attack, Defensive Attack, Defensive Roll 3, Fast Grab, Grabbing Finesse, Improved Hold, Improved Initiative 1

    Powers (59 points):
    Immunity (Suffocation, Starvation, Thirst)
Senses: Vision (Darkvision, Infravision, low-light vision, ultravision, radius)
    Touch (Acute, Analytical, Tracking)
    Feature (Iron Stomach)
Alternate Form: Liquid (36 total points + 1)
Suffocation 6 (ranged, progressive Affliction, resisted by Fort)
Alternate Effect: Snare 8 (ranged, cumulative affliction, extra condition, resisted by Dodge, Limited Degree)
    Elongation 3
    Insubstantial 1
    Swimming 4
Humanoid Synthform (Dynamic array. 36 total points)
Alternate Effect (Dynamic, Removable Flaw): Enhanced Trait Strength 10
Alternate Effect (Dynamic, Removable Flaw): Speed: 5
Alternate Effect (Dynamic, Removable Flaw): Flight: 10

Having thought about this more, yeah, I like Gleep way more. I've got a first run at the stats. Just have a few things I'm not happy with and want to tweek.

Also changed the backstory just a bit to be more interesting.

Looks cool Destroyah, but why does Gleep have a language if its the only one with any sentience? I mean, its really cool to be the only one of its kinds, but seems the only culture it has is the culture of the researchers that it has met. Like I made Deciduous to have basic knowledge but just be really stiff since it was all implanted. But Gleep basically has only spoken with humans its whole life, right? So it would actually be pretty human mentally.

Zeke, I actually removed that in the most recent build of the stats.

But probably that didn't get reflected in what I posted. (I have a page of stats on Google Docs and a version that I made in an Excel spreadsheet and the version I posted here.) I'll sit down tonight and do a check against the Excel doc because that'd be the most accurate version. :)

It's not that big of a thing. I removed it (at least, I'm pretty sure I did, like I said, I'll check) mostly because I needed that point elsewhere. It's probably one I'd like to add back in later on.
Then it could be explained as Gleep working on creating his own language, cause that'd amuse me.

And yes it would be a very goopy dialect. :)

Well yeah, I was just trying to help, sorry if I came off nit pickey.

Just interesting to think. The guy was stuck in a pool for unknown years as the only creature aware of itself, then suddenly these aliens drop out of the sky and let you know thinking is actually common.

Maybe its first "language" was releasing enzymes that the scientists responded too. Maybe it can't even burble without the suit.

Its a really cool concept, and I was curious which direction you wanted to go with it. No doubt Gleep with be a lot of fun to work with.

hmm, I actually hadn't much though about Gleep having much sentience before being gathered, maybe the inkling of it. I'd figured it was something that really developed after being taken away from his home-world.

But having had sentience before then and coming to understand that the big clomping things poking and prodding you are thinking beings just like you would be great too. Actually, yeah. Let's go with that, I like that better. :)
It'd also very neatly explain why he may not act all that human sometimes, though he's obviously a sentient being.

And I think he can talk alright when out of the suit. He takes in air and then expels it while contracting the opening to make sounds. Or could talk by pushing a tendril of himself into an ear canal and vibrating directly against the ear drum. :P

And I was inspired a bit by Deciduous, though I do have ideas of a different direction I want to take.

Though the primary inspiration was picturing Gleep as a bad special effect like from a 50's movie. "Blob from Beyond the Stars!" kinda thing.

Edit: I do love the idea of secretions as the opening of communications or playing a part in that process. I'm gonna steal that, if you don't mind. :D

Steal please. I stole that idea from the Lazers and Feelings game that was up for a while.

And to let you know, if Gleep tries to do that ear canal thing to Privateer, Gleep might get shot. Just saying, might want to keep the goo to yourself.

I'd half expect it. I only suggested it just because the visual was so wrong. :D

EDIT: Yeah, I'd removed the point for the Language advantage to get Accurate Attack instead. Stats above are updated to be correct.

So I altered slightly and expanded Gleeps background above. Zekebeau gave me the idea that Gleep's been sentient for far longer then I'd initially stated, which I very much like. Also expanded on why he's signed up with the exploration program and on New Amsterdam.

Nothing ground-shattering, but it was something that I wanted to add explicitly instead of leaving it unsaid. :)
