After reading the Goodbye PSO thread, I had a question for you guys.
Does anyone know of any cell phone models that allow themselves to be "dialed" by another device? By that I mean, do any of them allow you to use their wireless signal with another phone?
My goal would be to be able to use my Dreamcast and my Saturn Netlink over a cellular connection that I would already have, as opposed to paying extra every month for a home phone line. Im in the market for a new cellphone some time in the next couple of weeks.
Would that even work? Would the DC even dial if it didn't register the right voltage that it would normally get from a regular wall-mounted phone jack? I've heard of people using cell phones as wireless modems for PCs before, but never for consoles.
Any help would be appreciated. I really don't know shit about how phones work other than I talk into one end and you hear me out of the other. I know this could go in H/A, but tech related threads usually do better here in G&T.
You need a dedicated cellular modem to do this. You can't transmit the audio data through a cellular connection like it was a normal phone line because the compression applied throws a lot of data away. There are some phones that can work as a dial-up modem, usually with some sort of peripheral, but it's really slow, even by dial-up standards.
EDIT: Apparently my phone (Motorola C139) has a built in modem, but I've no idea how I'd go about using it.
So my only realistic option is to get a home phone line? Dial up networking only seems to work well on the DC when it's running through a windows 98 machine, and even then it's a bitch to get running with Q3, so it looks like I'm gonna have to get a separate landline.
Yeah, there are still a few games online, but I've been reading about cellular modems and it looks like even though the speed is pretty high compared to conventional dial-up, the latency is ridiculous, which defeats the purpose.
Do you have highspeed internet and a modem in your current desktop\laptop? You can act as your own ISP and use your broadband speed to provide internet access to your Dreamcast. I did this many years ago and still have the device I built to get the Dreamcast connected to the PC with the modems. I'll see if I can find the specs to the thing online, I'm sure there still out there just haven't looked in a while.

It's for Windows98 but I know it worked for XP when I tried it.
I've had a real hard time getting it up and running on XP. I plan to pick up an old machine and run Windows 98 on it anyway, since I want to start running a dedicated Q3 server again.
On a side note, the DC's modem upload speed is capped at 33kbps. Since essentially you're uploading data to the DC when you're using ICS on a broadband PC, then you're limited to 33kbps for DC gaming when you set it up like that. Still much better than your average dial-up ISP, though.
And having the home phone line means I could use the NetLink as well.
Sort of ... the web browser of course still works, shitty as it is. PSO ... well there's a free rogue server set up some where by some guys who reverse engineered it. Sega allows them to run it because they only support the Dreamcast version, which Sega doesn't support. (so no free PSO for us gamecube owners)

Hmm, no. I played on a free server many years ago and Gamecube was supported. Hell it was like 2005 when I did it. They had the server so that you could download it as well and play but that only supported PC and DC. But the server that was running online supported all 3.

You could try using VMWare to run a Win98 Virtual Machine on your XP rig. I have one set up solely for playing XCOM.

That actually seems like a good idea. I'm gonna try getting my old iBook G3 to be a dial-in server and try getting my dreamcast setup to go online tonight.

Fuck.
Also, thanks.
