(Temporary) free (old) game: Alien Shooter!

So, there's this site that gives away a new game every day. 95% of the time, it's all pretty much crap. Today, they're giving us fun crap. http://game.giveawayoftheday.com/alien-shooter/

The game is Alien Shooter. Think, like, your average Diablo clone. With guns. In the future. Also, Zerg. I've been having fun with it for the past half hour.

Each level consists of two parts. First, an endless journey through the darkened reaserch complex to flip the lightswitch. For some reason, all the star-trek doors start working when the lights come on. Behind one of those doors is a freaking massive horde of aliens. The second part of your quest is to kill each and every single one of the aliens and beam out, leaving a trail of red (or green. family friendly!) blood in your wake.

That pretty much sums everything up right there. Guy with a big gun against a straight line of pathfinding-impared zerglings. Behold the amazing desk-chair physics.

Yeah, only like 7 and a half hours left to download before the offer expires. The install seems to be free of badware. Have fun.

Sweet, I love this style of game. Thanks for posting this. I'll have to check out this giveaway site more often. And yeah, a new Crusader game would be amazing.

People would probably just complain that it ripped off Halo and Diablo though...ugh.

I just passed this up this morning when I got email. I'm glad you posted it or I would have never given it a second thought.

not bad for a mindless shooter.

Yeah, I've had quite a few "Crap, it's the flood!" and "Onoes, Zerg rush!" moments. The solution to these impossible situations with 5000 red beasties coming at you in a hallway seems to be purely "Buy a bigger gun."
Not that that's bad or anything.

I'm going to look the gift horse in the mouth. You have to download and install the game within the "giveaway" period - 1 day. So no future installations, and clearly the installer is "phoning home" to check the date. And (being as I'm suspicious of free things) I wonder what other info is it sending? The terms and conditions mentioned in the install process do not appear to actually exist on the site (at least not in anyplace I can find). They say it's adware/spyware free, but nothing seems to hold them to that. That's a little scary.

So free game = Yay. Strings attached = Boo.

So how is this related to Alien Shooter:Vengeance? AS:V looked pretty cool, and this does look like the same kinda thing. Is this just a powered down older version?

AS:V's sort of like a reimagining, I think. Makes me wonder if it'll get expansion packs as well.

So what's to stop people from getting "creative" once they've got it installed? Not that I advocate such, of course.

This is probably the most fun I've ever had playing a free game. Although the "No updates" probably means they've put some game-fucking bug they'll fix in a week...meaning you either buy it, or you're screwed.

the non-game side of the giveaway of the day is pretty sweet a lot of days... probably. I've downloaded a lot of stuff, but haven't used anything yet, because it's usually specific-case stuff.

This is surprisingly fun. I think I like it more than AS:V, for some reason. Not much difference in the graphics, though the AS:V animations are a lot smoother.

Meh. The little cannon fodder lizards just don't have that awesome something that makes the spider things from Vengeance so - well, awesome. That and the lack of the so-obscene-it-must-be-a-parody gibbing. Still fun, though.

I've wanted to buy it for awhile..but no stores around me have even heard of it..and the last update they gave on the digital download version was "We'll also be announcing Alien Shooter: Vengeance's availability as a digital download in the coming weeks. I tried this game once from a link from Crimsonland (which I will go on record saying is the best thing man has ever made) but it blue screen crashed my computer when I installed it. It looked very similar to Crimsonland minus the 2D awsomesauce

...so why didn't you just snag it from Amazon or something? That's, like, ten days at worst by freebie-mail.

Hmm. This could lead to some interesting discussion. ::Heads off to the freeform forum::

Alien Shooter: Vengeance was really hard to find when it was first released, but I've noticed it's gotten easier. Many Gamestop's carry the game (check their website to see if any stores near you do) & I noticed that my local Circuit City had a couple in stock when I was there yesterday buying a DVD.

AS:V is also known as Alien Shooter 2 so it's the sequel to this free game. I haven't tried the first game, but AS:V is a lot of fun in a mostly mindless blow up everything in sight way. I haven't played it as much as I'd like (got distracted with stuff like Castlevania on XBLA, the Titan Quest expansion, and now Guitar Hero 360), but I have a 5 day weekend starting tomorrow so I'll probably work on the Story mode (finished the Survival Mode on Normal already).

AS: Vengeance really gives you that feeling of incredible power to an extent that few games I've played have matched. Among other things, if you max out the rocket launcher line of weapons in Survival Mode, the final weapon it gives you is a Nuclear Warhead Launcher that destroys all normal enemies instantly without injuring you, seriously damages mini-bosses & the final boss, has an area of effect larger than the screen, and has a rate of fire of about once every 5 seconds. Oh and ammo is not a problem. And the really fun thing is that you practically need that weapon at that point in the game due to the crazy number of monsters that show up at that point.
