Everyone grab a shovel!
Hoo boy...that was...not good. I think that's going in the bundle with my Flame Red 3DS when I put it up for sale.

Yeah I'm the same way with a bunch of the projects I've backed! Just forget about them and someday it's a little Christmas.
At the time, I owned a 3DS but almost never used it (I bought it last January because I had wanted one for a while, but the perceived value was higher than the cost for me until X and Y were confirmed to be 3DS exclusive) but I figured I'd be using it more by the time it came out. I was correct.

Anyhoo, I guess my question for the 3DS thread is: for how many games does it really feel that the 3D adds something and is essential to the experience? Or is it ignored by most games and wouldn't make a difference if I turn it off?
You gotta look at it on a case by case basis I guess. When you get a new game, just turn on the 3D and see if you like it.
Basically, they sometimes purposely ignore good camera practices for 3d mario games like Mario 64 in order to show off the stereoscopic 3D.
I physically can't play anything in 3D. And the worst I've ever run into is the occasional game like Layton where I lament "This would probably look really cool in 3D..." but that's it, no game hindrance at all.
But I enjoy most of them better in 3D. Kid Icarus, A Link Between Worlds, Fire Emblem, Bravely Default, Ocarina of Time 3D, all Mario games, they're all prettier and more awesome with 3D, IMO.
Don't know much else about it though.
It might either be Shin Megami Tensei IV (of which Persona is a spinoff) or possibly Persona Q. Do either of these ring a bell?

Atlus has stuff on the 3DS.
Nintendo, where the hell is Culdcept?

If you are physically incapable of seeing the 3D effect, don't worry about it, it absolutely won't ruin any of the games at all.
If you're just averse to it, if you think holding the system still to keep it in the sweet spot will be annoying, or if it makes you a little dizzy or something, I would say to give it a try with 3D on for a good week of gaming at least. I get the feeling that a lot of people try it once, it messes with their head a little and they think it'll be like that every time, so they turn it off and keep it off. The effect was really weird to me for the first few hours of playing, it even made my head hurt a little, but my eyes adjusted after just a short while and I can leave it on full blast all the time. I really like having it on for many games. I think others have had a similar experience. If you give it a shot you may be glad you did.
has anyone played either of these so I can get a idea of which to get?
Pokemon especially. The fame rate drops noticeably in X/Y if you turn 3D on. Game Freak didn't bother to optimize it at all, and I'm frankly surprised it passed through Nintendo's QA.
I don't believe its made by the same people or released yet.
Conception II?
Other than that, I'm completely lost.

And I looked it up...hmm...it seems interesting...but it also looks to be a harem game(I can't stand harem stuff).
So...I guess I'll wait for a bit more info.
Demo for it will be on the eshop on the 25th, so that should let you know whether you want the game or not.
And there's not even 3D support when having double battles or fighting hordes.
Devil Survivor Overclocked, 3D numbers and menus, yeah.
EO IV: Not very good 3D.
Tales of the Abyss: Runs worse and looks horrible with 3D on. The worst 3D of any good game.
Code of Princess: Almost unplayable with 3D on, runs much better with it off.
Games with a tradeoff are:
MH3U: If you turn off 3D from the menu (not the slider) the game goes into 60FPS locked mode. The game looks good in 3D though.
DOA:Dimensions: Same as above, but you don't need to turn it off from the menu, the slider works fine.
Games that 3D helped tremendously:
Mario Kart 7, Star Fox 64 3D, Ocarina of Time 3D, A Link Between Worlds, Resident Evil Revelations, Kingdom Hearts:DDD, Pilotwings Resort and a bunch of others.

Been playing that recently. It's got great 3D. Despite disappointing expectations its a really fun puzzle rpg game.
EO IV has great 3D!
If you play it on an XL.
Untold Story has much better use of it.
3D for me is an added treat, for when I am sitting down to an extended session with a game and really want to get into it (also if I am home and don't need to worry about conserving the battery), but I really feel like the 3D can bring me more into a game. When I first played my friend's launch 3DS I was unconvinced, but when I got my own and sat down with Mario Kart 7 I was really won over. At it's best, I feel the 3D effect doesn't try to grab you or astound you, but gently pulls you into the game world.

You mean Etrian Odyssey Untold? Does it look like actual corridors?
But yeah, EO4 is a great game, and it's not like the depth that is there is unwelcome or anything, but if you look closely when walking around it's basically just a flat picture of the environment set back a little, with UI stuff hovering on top. The corridors aren't actually modeled to extend outward in 3D space. This may be because they used some graphical trickery to display the dungeon and it wouldn't look right in real polygonal 3D, I don't know.
My full thoughts on it are here, but the short version is that it's a good game, not a great game, and not as good as the original. If you've played through the original, and let's even just suppose that you still can, this one gives very little reason to want to play through it unless you simply want more.
It's very easy, I found, to simply complete the main quest, and would make a great game for beginners-- they can complete the main story and engage in the real challenge, that of getting everything, if they choose to.
Between it and Yoshi's Island DS, I find that while this one plays better, Yoshi's Island DS felt overall more interesting, if a bit frustrating at times. If you played the original, that's probably the better one to use as a follow-up, though neither reach the heights of the original.
Frankly, I wish we'd gotten something on the level of this, as the degree to which Yoshi's New Island borrows from the original gets downright shameful at points.

The issue is that it takes me forever to get the DS to an angle where the 3D works, and then I have about 2 minutes to enjoy it before the eye pain becomes too much.

I think the Layton games are almost audio-essential, rather than 3d-essential -- I do the same thing, but I listen for the little cue that tells you when the magnifying glass touched something interesting.
