Setting up a Game Server

I was planning to make a Game On thread in the G&T forum for Dystopia (which is this awsome Half-Life mod, you should check it out, I'm making a Game On about it). I have a first post planed out but I was wondering if it would be a good idea to have a PA server ready to go.

This may be a really stupid question but what is involved in setting up a dedicated game server.

Thank you for your time.

Well if it's half life you have a few options avaliable to you. The easiest way to do it is to set it up on Windows. One of the "games" on steam is the half life dedicated server. You pretty much just have to "play" the dedicated server. The problem with HL2 servers is that they are fairly bandwidth intensive. I ran a CS:S server for a bit, and with 800kbps up I could handle 12-14 people.

If you plan on playing on hosting the server from the same machine you are playing from you'd better have a dual core machine and a decent amount of ram. Otherwise you need a reasonably (mine was running on an A64 3200+) beefy machine because of all the physics calculations that go on.
