[PbP] Dresden Files - setup, one more IRC session needed
Posts
From the Desk of Darth Vertroue Diplomat to the USA.
I'm good for a live session any day but Wednesday. I can do IRC but live chat is fine as I'm a slow typer. :P
It looks like 9p-11:30p Eastern on a Thursday would work for most people. (Oats, Ardent, Nitsua, GG, MegaMan001, what timezone are y'all?)
We've also had waaay more interest than I expected - 12 people, unless I miscounted, which is two full groups. I can't run two groups in the same world. I've tried it before, I got burned out. Normally, I'd ask folk to submit characters and I'd winnow that way... but characters aren't created first, the city is. Which is the collaborative thingy we're trying to plan for.
I don't have the writing chops for a Dresden PbP.
Feel free to @ me if you need another torso, though.
I kind of want to play a self-taught magic-type, so I think I can do 7 refresh with a sorcerer, I just will have to do without The Sight for now.

Power level: "Waist" (7 refresh / 25 skills) is fine with me.
Here's the first Official Question of the Game (everyone in this thread should answer) - what sorts of things do you want to interact with (or want to see being interacted with)?
DC has an enormous interfaith network that (in the real world) is focused on outreach and education about religious differences. It's headquartered out of the All Souls' (Unitarian Universalist) Church in Adams Morgan. They could easily be a network that supports True Believers or Champions of God in a game setting. I'm perfectly willing to make the church my locale (the entire area is pretty interesting from a supernatural perspective, with the Scottish Rite literally across the street from All Souls' and the Zoo just down the road).
The city itself is dedicated to the goddess Columbia, which could easily become something the characters get involved with. Maybe Columbia picks a side in the Red Court-White Council conflict. Maybe we have to convince her to expel both sides beyond the Boundary Markers of the District. Maybe she asks the group to expel both sides beyond the Boundary Markers. All sorts of Columbia-related fun to be had.
Ghosts: Cold Days showed an interesting take on ghosts that I'd like to explore more into.
I can do Skype but I much prefer IRC. Much less demanding in resources and fewer interruptions. I can probably find a Fate bot.
My character's connection to the giants of the Appalachian Mountains suggests a lot of the supernatural world that Harry's never seen, and it'd be interesting to explore more of that.
Oh, and I'm good to play whenever but Saturday 2-6, since I've got D&D D&D then.
I'm thinking about this Thursday to start working out City Stuff, or is that too little notice for folk?
Ghost are always fun to have around.

...I'm really glad there's no reliable evidence for the paranormal.
I'm eastern time. I apologize for not making that clear. I'd really like to play this with you guys, but will back out if there is still too many. This coming Thursday is perfect for me though.
Edit: as for what I would like to interact with - the Fae sounds really good to me. With all the crazy back and forth of the weather we've been experiencing on this end (I live in eastern VA, about three hours from DC, so my weather is pretty much theirs), I can imagine it coming from a struggle between winter and summer with winter being reluctant to relinquish their power which is causing the changeover to spring to take longer than usual.
Outside of that, something demonic may be interesting too. That major church was mentioned earlier and it could center around that. This odd weather just has really been on my mind, so it would be quite fun to play around with that a bit.
Also, I tend to play magic users when RP'ing and would love to do so here as well unless we get too many people wanting to be such. I tend to like fire like Harry, but like a lot more thought during my combat rather than just letting loose liken he does. Of course, the books wouldn't be as comical (or exciting, take your pick) if he was always thinking things through before doing anything.
Edit: Another thought (I'm up and can't sleep and getting thoughts out may help), I've gotten lost driving through that city every time I go through there at night (I had a gf who lived in PA during the summers) and always end up on the same road going through the same neighborhood no matter how I try to change up my route. Coming up with a reason why that would be (thinking about it now, in Dresdenverse terms, makes it creepier than it probably is) could be interesting. Maybe there is a let line there or my GPS is being affected by some magic in that area that draws me to there. All I know is that it has happened at least five different times and I can pretty much describe the street from memory along with the neighborhood I drove through.

Other than that, I've been re - reading Your World and am nearly through the city creation bit. I had forgotten how involved that is. I'm really glad that we have someone familiar with the area and I'm sure Google maps can help a great deal as well. What I found funny is that the book mentions a bunny killer in the DC (actually Fairfax, VA) area and it actually existed in the 70's. I just thought they were being funny before. I bet there are a ton of things like that in an area of that size and importance that we can work with. The image of a guy dressed in a bunny suit (or a Nevernever creature) just tickles me.
Most of the original documents detailing the land inside of the District from L'Enfant's surveys still exist.
Edit to add: while I fully agree there is probably a Marchioness, there may be a Duke or Duchess of Columbia, with the marches being Alexandria, Rock Creek, Capitol Hill, and the Anacostia. Meaning there's intra-Court conflict available as well. It is, after all, some of the most important and valuable land in an area that was apportioned specifically to enhance the area's magical qualities.
You can put in Nitsua as your handle and #dresdenPA as the channel.
Thanks. I appreciate that.
Edit: I've also been looking over some of the links provided by the Evil Hat guys on what power level really means in terms of character creation, impact on story, and what types of antagonists one could potentially face and survive. This link here (http://www.rickneal.ca/?p=594) is what I was reading. I do think that waist deep is pretty good for a starter, but DC sounds like a much rougher city than could be represented at that level. If we keep it at waist deep, then I think we should narrow it down to a certain section of the city only. It being the capital of one of the most powerful countries in the world, I have no doubt that the supernatural significance would be just as high.
As an example, that link states that people at that level are ones like Murphy at the beginning of the books whereas the next level up is where Harry is at in Storm Front as well. It could be interesting to play at that level and I have to be more brain than brawn, but I wanted to put out there what should be expected from that.
Edit 2: It seems I misread that page. Submerged (the highest level) is where Dresden is at in Storm Front. It listed Mortimer and the Alphas at the previous level along with being an apprentice Wizard or White Court Vampire. It seems some supplemental reading could be useful before we get together on Thursday.
If you're going to be playing a spellcaster you won't be up to Wizard tier yet. Even the sorcerer template is wonky for 7 refresh (no Sight).
