Music Software - Freeware alternatives to FL Studio

Hi all,

was wondering if anyone knows of some half decent freeware alternatives to FL Studio that I can use for basic music creation? Just basically want something to mess around in, nothing overly serious.

    Reaper is good, and free-ish. It rolls into nagware after a trial period.

    Is GarageBand still free? Requires a Mac I think. If you are computer savvy you can install Linux multimedia suite on a ubuntu box. It's like he best cross between pro tools and fl studio with all of the intuitiveness of flying your own spaceship, and by that I mean it's confusing. If you are at all serious though, watch some videos and get a midi keyboard and have a great time with Linux multimedia suite.
