This is a thread for the discusion of taking photographs and cameras.

I am taking a photography class this semester, and as such I have decided that it's time to upgrade my digicam. Currently I have a Canon Powershot A60 which is only two megapixels, although it has a wide range of manually adjustable features.

I am thinking about getting the Canon Powershot S3 IS as an upgrade. Anyone have any other suggestions? I'm looking for something in the $300 to $400 range, so not quite SLR level (I can borrow my moms if I want to use an SLR).

    Save up an extra couple hundred and buy a Rebel SLR (or XtI.... never have i been closer to losing my job then when I found 2 of these sitting on a pallet in an unmarked box)

    I mean the S3 is nice and all, but I wish I'd had the cash at the time for the low-end Rebel for my trip, but oh well.

    also here's some photos take with my camera with the auto settings. I actually just ordered the lens adapter and hood set. Which is cool because then I can use 58mm lenses and whatnot.

    yea if youre spending more than $300 on a camera that wont fit into the change pocket of your pants then you should get a proper slr

    The only camera I have is an old 35mm that I can't afford film for (fuck being broke)

    or my parent's old sony digital that takes pictures at like 640x480

    one of the only issues I've had with mine is it sometimes has trouble figuring out what to focus on in Macro Mode, but I might just need to fiddle with the settings a bit more.

    Well last I checked SLR's are around $600 at the minimum. The camera I'm getting is a birthday present from my parents and grandmother so the ceiling is set at $400.

    Yes this might be the best idea. Hmm... This shall be brought up in discusion tomorrow...

    Unfortunatly I'v got a speeding ticket I have to pay for (plus traffic school ugh). Hmm must look at my finances.

    I'll keep an eye out on my deal sites for any good prices. From time to time Dell has a really great deals on cameras. In fact I think the Powershot S3 is around $239

    I think the S3 is an excellent camera to learn on. Shooting with an SLR won't make your pictures better, and until you learn how to make a camera do what you want it to do it'll just be a waste of money.

    i have an old canon a75 i am planning on running it into the ground in europe this fall since much better cameras run about 200 dollars now. i'd love to pick up a slr but i anticipate being robbed at some point during the two months backpacking so i'm only bringing things i am cool with dudes stealing.
