Also: I'm sick of people bitches about blue shells. I've seen like two articles in random places on the internet whining about them. If you have any items at all in the game, you need the blue shell too. In a game with items that hit other players and cause them to go slower, you need something that will always hit the top dude. The reason for this is that once you get any distance away from the pack, you're at a huge advantage by virtue of not being subject to the entire rest of the arsenal the other players are packing. To say "well I'm in front because I race better" is not completely true. You got in front by racing better, sure, but after you got a bit of distance you can race like shit and stay there because you're not taking hits from all the rest of the items in the game (except lightning which is bullshit and should be removed).

the blue shell is way less disruptive in this game than previous games, i've taken hits and not even been close to losing the lead

the lightning item is annoying and borderline broken... mostly because of the way it weens racers back to full size sequentially, can ruin your ramps, and also blanks your item slot

the blue shell annoys me a little because dodging it is impossible without the horn, which you are not very likely to have

i liked how it worked in double dash, where if you timed it juuuuust right you could drift-boost out of its way. it was a difficult enough thing to pull off that you would still get hit most of the time, but it gave you a chance to defend your lead

taking second place because someone smacked you with a blue shell right before you crossed the finish line is annoying because you played as well as you possibly could have and still lost through no fault of your own

Might need enough coins plus a dash boost plus a mushroom or something. Timing may be tight too. (Also if it is like 7 you have to be using a 150cc kart but I am assuming you are anyway.)

Also can you dodge lightning bolts by hopping or is that just something from a fever dream I had?

i dunno how it works in this one but i think in some older mario kart if you were in hitstun from another item when a lightning bolt went off then it wouldn't affect you

the lightning bolt is a lot more fair though since it hits every body equally. it's guaranteed to give the user a big leg up but it's not very likely to fuck the leader of the pack out of first place, unless they were already in danger of losing their position

If its like in 7 than the time you are shrunk is based on what position you are in, with 1st place being shrunk the longest, but the durations are all pretty similar. I like the lightning bolt in general because it makes every drops their item and mixes stuff up.

Only bit I don't like is how if you are flying it makes you fall into bottomless pits. If you pay attention to the items everyone has sometimes you can bait out the lightning bolt before a jump but people usually just use them right when they get them anyway.

I was playing Mario Kart 64 on VC a while back with Joseph, and we were doing Wario Stadium.

That fucker got like three lightning bolts in one round and cost me at least half a lap because he used it as I made the jump off the ramp.

And then got it two more times and forced me to basically stop at the ramp each time to avoid losing that much distance over and over.

Lightning at least doesn't usually change your position in the race very much. The blue shell though just maliciously fucks over the player in first, which doesn't even benefit the person who fired it. And if the guy in 1st is so far ahead that nobody can even see him, it probably won't be enough - it's relatively close races where it changes the game.

lightning is best used in 7 when people are in the air over a pit

though the recovery time from falling is much faster in 8

That's true. They should make it so blue shell only comes up if you're a certain distance away from the pack, because yeah, it is pretty bullshit when you're barely ahead and they start flying at you.

Do blue shells in 8 fly at ground level along the track?

Because in 7 they do and thus can potentially disrupt multiple racers between you and first place, plus the first place guy should endeavor to catch as many other people as he can in the explosion.

I'm fine with blue shells for the most part, barring the inevitable blue shell --> red shell --> lightning --> 8th place when you're two feet from the finish line, but that's just Mario Kart.

I reckon blue shells should be limited to boxes in risky/slow places, like the one on top of the rock in Mario Kart 64, instead of a guaranteed 50 blue shells per race.

That's ridiculous. People already bitch "blue shells don't help the person that gets them!" Having to intentionally slow yourself down / potentially fuck yourself over further to get one just compounds that issue, and turns it explicitly into trolling.

They help the person that gets it since blue shells travel in a low path that can hit other drivers while on its way to first place. Mario Kart 64 had item boxes that only gave out blue shells in certain places, but then again blue shells still appeared in the normal item boxes.

Blue shells aren't that bad in 8 though.

I don't think slowing down really helps. I've dropped back to second when i saw the warning pop up and I still got hit.
