How are we supposed to feel about the gangsta/delivery man?

It seems like we're supposed to think he's sort of an ok dude/is a diamond in the rough because he cares about his family.

But he seems exceptionally obnoxious to me,

And why do they insist on putting kids in shows for family drama times? Who ever finds them anything but a chore? Do we identify more with the protagonist because he has a child?

He's gotta be expendable. I don't see him living very long.
This prediction seems less likely, unfortunately.

"You touch your face once every 3 minutes"

I counted, only three face touches across all characters over 65 minutes.

I also counted and I only touched my face 3 times.

    #jussayin

There were also fuck all face touches this episode.

I am starting to think the impressive spiel at the start might have been bullshit.

Some nice build-up with an interesting cast of characters developing. I'm excited to find out more about the strain and how it actually works, how the new vamps are bound to the big guy, etc. Two episodes in and the suck is minimal, hope they can keep it up!

I was disappointed at how little we got in the second episode, and I find the main character dreadfully boring except in the scenes of him dealing with his family life, but a lot of the supporting cast, plus the lore they're building up, still has me hooked.

Yeah. I expected him to bite it this episode.

I liked the new episode, it didn't have the bad scenes in the pilot that came up every so often
like the horribly conversation between the airport owner and the airport controller person when they went to the plane.
The story building continues and is getting me deeply interested in what the past is with the Abraham van Helsing Setrakian. The messenger for
    the Master
is intriguing. He hasn't done anything of note yet he steals every scene he's in.

What's disappointing is that the CNC protagonists are boring. Ef is the only one they've given any depth too, Mia Maestro is Mia Maestro
of course he's in a relationship with her. Who didn't see that coming?
and Jim Kent (Samwise Gamgee Sean Astin) who is a bit shady, these two have barely any personalities for me to care about. They're both talented actors, do something with them, show!

edit: I had to look up wikipedia to find Kent's name and can't name Mia's character off the top of my head.

So I watched the first episode.

    It was okay.
The weird info dumps the characters did (3 times iirc) was stupid an unnecessary.

I really really wished they didn't have that eyelid thing. Both scenes they used it in would have been so much better without it.

And the acting was a bit stilted in a few scenes.

But it has earned atleast the next 2-3 episode watching.

    This plot got really dumb.
I'm pretty sure carbon monoxide poisoning isn't anything like the actual state of these bodies. And the idea that anyone in the CDC or the Department of Health or whatever would just be like "fuck it, lets risk a pandemic outbreak in NYC!" is absurd.

While racing light mechs, your Urbanmech comes in second place, but only because it ran out of ammo.

Yeah, this was my biggest issue as well. It wouldn't have had any real impact on the plot if they'd listened to him and needed his expertise instead of acting all dumb. Made zero sense.

There is strong evidence of many of the higher ups being bribed/coerced such as that CDC guy who let the casket out of the airport. I don't think it is so much buying the carbon monoxide excuse themselves as it was a semi plausible explanation that they were either bought or forced into giving to buy time for the strain to get going.

So it seems like the Strain is actually like mind worms.

The draculas are mind worm boils which come together and grow a giant worm to feed themselves.

Mind worms... mind worms... where have I seen those before?...

Yeah, its totally Blackheart Industries. Which is a perfectly innocent and not evil name for a company that would work with Draculas.

I'm still wondering what the heck that executive was thinking, wanting this done as a comedy show.

Well... As it is most of the acting, dialogue and creature design is comedically bad. So....

Basically 90% of the people in this show have to be part of the vampire illuminati otherwise NOTHING makes sense. Its staggeringly bad. Like the morgue scene. What the hell. Where is the army? The quarantine? Why has nobody noticed all the missing bodies? The fact that it seems like peoples reactions to one of the most devastating viral incidents on american soil is "nah fuck it it was probably a gas leak"

Like the only interesting element of this show going in was the Vampires as a contagion angle. And they just completely ballsed up the health department/quarantine/outbreak element in a hilariously awful way.

Basically it can only be explained by a vast and boring conspiracy that conveniently can be used to fill in plot holes for the writers.

Worst of all the dialogue is atrocious, the characters who arent cardboard are universally and needlessly antagonistic and meanspirited. If you had asked me what famous director was involved in this show I would have guessed Roland Emmerich. Some characters seem to forget their personality and act weirdly different, or lose competency and expertise suddenly, only to regain it in the next sentence.

I hope the apocalypse happens soon and the vampires and their ridiculously weird and convoluted plot (which i know will be handwaved away) wipe everyone out and make a new world order.

Alternatively the twist is its not vampires and this is a Dark City show.

This weeks episode was better, if only for the opening stinger

Though the morgue continues to be a giant black hole in the plot, considering how last weeks ended...

I'll chime in once more....the books have all the exact same flaws. This isn't a case of the TV show getting it wrong, this is the exact story they wanted told in both.

Yah there's a lot that if this was like Buffy or Sleepy Hollow you'd just blow past it, but it's got a very serious tone so it's just super off

    haters gonna hate

Lots of horrory goodness in this episode, and it felt like they were properly gearing up for more shit to go down later, as opposed to the last episode which was just too slow.

I will say that if you don't like the creature effects at this point, I just don't know what to tell you. It must be a matter of taste. I also kind of retroactively enjoy that the survivors were mostly irresponsible dicks, because they're getting one hell of a comeuppance.

the problem isn't the effects or the horror, its that its far, far too obvious to the viewer what's going to happen due to the conspiracy and/or incompetence of everyone involved, and every minute not spent at that destination is just the show spinning its wheels now.

slow burn works in a book but not so great on television depending on the material.

Yeah, I mean I recognize that as an issue, but also that's just such a widespread problem with horror media in general, that as long as it is developing some forward momentum, I find I can look past it.

Yeah, it's one of those shows where you can see the gears moving behind it as you watch it.

But still, I'm enjoying it. The Walking Dead has transformed me into a zen monk when it comes to putting up with this kind of bullshit.

So you'd say it's a good adaptation of the book then?

I was hoping to give it a shot when it made its way to Netflix. Hmm.

I'm overall enjoying the show, but I get what it is. It's the cast of The Poseidon Adventure (or pick your own 70s disaster flick full of rote subplots, stiff dialogue and stock Hollywood character types filling time until the dying starts) versus the vampire apocalypse. You watch it for the scary buildup scenes, and the knowledge that things will pick up nicely once disaster starts.

I like the Russian Special Constable in Charge of Catching Rats.

Though at present his story is perhaps the most insane/inane inclusion in terms of the content they are using to establish his character and place within the story.

What's strange is that that the rat-catcher is more entertaining than the heroes.

I would watch a show focused on that rat-catcher. Just going in, terrifying kids who've been bitten, then taking out the rats.
The rest of the characters, meh, feed them to the wormpires or whatever, but Rat Man needs his own show.

But serious, what is his job supposed to be and does it have an actual analogue within the real world?

It seems like it sits between health inspector, animal control officer and loose cannon who gets results. But there are considerable inconsistencies between what I would expect of either of the first two.
