TV sounds like everyone's breathing Helium

I don't really know anything about home theater stuff but it has electricity, therefore Mom asked me to fix it.

When people are talking (on discs or the Roku) it sounds really high pitched like they are breathing helium. Everything's running through a somewhat old Sony receiver that has like a million buttons, and I don't know how to figure out what the problem is. As far as I can tell, the rest of the soundtrack is normal, but I'm not certain about that. I honestly avoid the TV so I'm not the ideal person to tackle this issue, but here we are.

Plug the source (Roku, DVD, etc.) directly into the TV, bypassing the receiver. Sound normal? Then it's something wacky with the receiver, and since you mention only dialogue being affected, it's likely an issue with the center channel as that's where most surround tech. sends it (to keep lips in sync, etc.) As for what could cause the issue, beats me. I would suggest looking up the model of the receiver online, see what it takes to do a factory reset.

Sounds like the receiver has a karaoke feature that allows you to modify pitch. Someone probably got into that setting accidentally and cranked it up.
