I would not call FC5 nihilistic.
It's way too passionate about its themes and preaching for that.

Far Cry as a series is trapped in the gaming industry's perennial refusal to deal with actual real-world political issues directly, preferring a mix of bothsiderism, amateur philosophy, and an intense desire to be edgy while staying noncontroversial. Spec Ops get cited so much because it is the major exception, but the Far Cry franchise hasn't had anything substantial to say about the actual world since Far Cry 2.

Except with the New Dawn, we move from "doomed" to "you really should have listened to the murdercult leader".
Well, make it even more obvious thant it was.

As someone who has played Far Cry V to completion, I think you are overstating this. The cult is shown as comically evil, and all the steps to your conversion are directed as if they were scenes from a horror movie. The game is absolutely about a person who is slowly being brainwashed, but that's a different thing than suggesting the developers secretly want you believe in the tenets of their fake death cult.

The ending (and the brainwashing) are just repeated themes from the series. The execution of the writing (and the gameplay and mission design) just got sloppier as the series progressed.

Yeah... I was generally in the "positive nihilist" camp for the ending to FC5, in the sense that my takeaway was that you should still strive to do what's right even if it ultimately doesn't matter what you do.

But reading the article linked to earlier and seeing the fate of your character... man, it makes me feel really icky about the whole thing in hindsight now. I have no desire to play New Dawn anymore.

New Dawn update. I look like a low rent Winter Soldier, my saw blade launcher now launches 3 blades at once, and I can carry up to 8 murder shovels. I think the whole spoiler part is super dumb and I'm disappointed by it, but I'm also having too much fun to be bothered by it much.

New Dawn is basically a downgrade from 5 in every way. The way enemy and weapon levels work, in particular, is so bad. There are 4 levels and you basically can't damage an enemy that's 2 levels above your weapon (and a one level difference has severely reduced damage). That isn't a huge deal most of the time, but there's a mission where you lose all your weapons and then have to scrounge for new ones. However, enemies only drop level 1 weapons, no matter what level they are...

God, I've gotten so bad at stealth in these games.

I was like a ninja in 3 but in 4, I'm like a lumbering beast that manages to get one or two with my bow before I get detected and have to go "well, fuck it, guess we're doing this. I have to whip out the machineguns and shotguns".

I basically just started New Dawn yesterday and I find the myriad opinions very interesting. Personally I couldn’t disagree with you more. I think it is mechanically fantastic, much better than Far Cry 5, and I’m glad you can’t just loot some overpowered weapon from a corpse. I agree it doesn’t make “sense” for elite enemies to wield garbage weapons, but it’s better than just immediately skipping to the end of progression and it takes guesswork out for the player having to decide if they should hold on to some OP weapon forever rather than exploring the various crafting and progression options.

I honestly feel like New Dawn has nailed progression better than any of the previous Far Crys.

My opinion of the game just kept dropping as I played it. I hope you enjoy it the whole way through, but I wouldn't be surprised if a similar thing happens with you.

Edit: I should clarify that I still don't think it's a bad game. I just don't think it's worth what they're selling it for. Maybe $15-20.

I'm so much better at the stealth in the AC games. I think it's the 3rd person perspective. I kind of need the cheat of drawing the camera back a bit to see around corners and whatnot. I lose too much vital information when you zoom in too far.

the number one thing about New Dawn is the main character will use a damn blade again for normal takedowns. Mr. Cop from last game was too goody goody to blade someone, he had to break necks instead. It's not near FC3 levels of takedown variety but it's a step back in the right direction.

Also I made my character look like Father John Misty very easily, without intending to, but I feel like mentioning that is kind of pointless since the crossover between people that listen to his music and also play Far Cry AND come here is very low.

As far as.. everything else, I like most things better than I did in FC5. I love raids, the recapture/scrap system. The lack of being kidnapped. More vehicles and stuff.

Even tho Ubi did an amazing job with Assassin's Creed with how they landed on Odyssey, making a fantastic game, you guys are right in that they are basically standing still on their Far Cry formula. Also agree about the political issues. A game doesn't HAVE TO, but it shouldn't pretend to unless it is really going to. Far Cry 2 is still my favorite Far Cry, but I have a high tolerance for jank and mechanics that didn't make it through quality control. and I will go on record saying "having malaria as a gameplay mechanic was a great thing." put it on my tombstone. The immersion level of FC2 was just off the charts, it wasn't tangible all the time but there was a pressing sense of unease. The villagers, the priest, the mercenaries, the Jackal, various other plot machinations. You were also sliding around in firefights as literal fire crept everywhere (seriously, the fire in that game worked better than in any FC since for some reason), hoping your worn gun you had to grab off an enemy wasn't going to jam up on you, or you wouldn't have a malaria fit when you also needed to help your buddy out and etc. I loved all that.

    Are you the magic man?

    Finished New Dawn Friday.

Really really loved the base building, scrapping outposts, and just the general chaos of it. Some of the vehicles and weapons were just so much fun. Air dropping everywhere was amazing and the expeditions were a lot of fun.

I stopped purchasing melee upgrades when I could carry 10 shovels. I felt any more than that was excessive. Then i started upgrading the shovel to do ridiculous damage.

Also I fell in love with the double jump ability you can pick up mid game. I think it broke a few of the missions by me being able to get to places they didn’t expect.

But wow the story is dumb. There were a few times it felt like they wanted you to sympathize with the bad guys but they did such a poor job on them I just couldn’t.
I don’t regret the purchase though. My buddy and I copped the entire game and we’re still laughing over some of the silliness we caused.

Well, I finished New Dawn. The story definitely could have used some work, but in my opinion it has some of the finest if not THE finest Far Cry gameplay and progression of the entire series.

I more or less "100%ed" except for completing all of the salvage locations and the two co-op challenges, plus some of the co-op achievements. Otherwise, I'm done and I think that's more than enough. 29 hours of content is what I've clocked in.

I think it was great and well worth it. And I didn't tire of it. Well, the Expeditions started to get a bit old at one point but I did 'em anyway.

Bought this yesterday for $20 and am very much enjoying it. Getting rid of resistance points was a great move. I'm also digging the consolidated skill tree and base building though I've only made one upgrade so far. And I could be crazy but I swear it runs better than FC5.

Speaking of base building- I upgraded the Workbench one level but I couldn't tell if there was an aesthetic change, does anyone know if as you upgrade parts of the home base it actually starts looking different?

So i'm thinking of picking up New Dawn since it's half off on the uplay sale, plus the discount voucher i'd hopefully be able to use alongside that. How much would I be able to ignore the story of it and just have fun with the gameplay? I know 5's story would be too much for me to overlook but is this one's more dumb than actively terrible?

Also are there any annoying characters that constantly talk into your radio?

A pretty decent amount from what I've seen so far. I think I've only done one main story mission but I've spent several hours just running around doing Far Cry stuff. I haven't experienced any constant radio chatter and Hurk is back, so that's pretty great.

Picked up New Dawn. I wanted the base building even though I suspect they're going to kick me in the junk and take it away at the end anyway. I like the saw blade thing and the grandma sharpshooter. I took out an entire level 1 outpost by using binocs and having her snipe them. At one point we mis-communicated and she zipline'd into 4 four of them while I frantically backed her up with a steath AR from the nest. Hilarious. Outpost liberated - undetected.

The villains are meh and the story is whatever, I think the fun in these games is largely the silliness that ensues when various game systems converge. Like when I'm ready to take some bad guys out ... and then the mutated bear wanders in. There was an amazing moment last night when I shot a cage to release a rank 3 bear, and watched as it torn up a trainyard. someone set the damn thing on fire fighting it, and the last guard alive was clueless until they saw a flaming bear running at them. "Bear!" they shouted, raising their gun. And then when the bear fire mauled them, "Fire!" they shouted, burning, and then died. I mean, it was funny. Like there was a moment of panic where they couldn't figure out whether to yell "Bear!" or "Fire!" first.

Also, I finally finished the hours of darkness DLC, and can I just say for a series so focused on fps stealth, it's weird that they only perfected it for that one DLC? 4 different abilities that you get for successive stealth kills, all of which are incredible useful, so you're incentivized to keep the streak going, but you can still just shoot a rocket at something if that's what the moment calls for. That should be their stealth template going forward, IMO. It really worked for me.

Finally got around to finishing New Dawn. Honestly, I think 5 was an incomplete story and New Dawn completes it. Taken as a whole arc, I like it. The intermission is a bit of a downer (after the end of 5), but New Dawn for once avoids the "you're the monster here." and kind of has a more traditional moral at the end. The bad guys get theirs and the good guys win.

    regarding Joseph:
While it was initially concerning to have him all of a sudden be introduced as a savior figure who was right all along, by the very end he's a broken man who realizes he's only brought death and destruction in the name of God. So in that sense, his arc is not the worst to me anymore. He full realizes he's in the wrong and you get to decide how he pays for that. Still kind of a bummer about the Judge though.

So in the end, I think the end of New Dawn leaves the whole story sitting much better with me. 5 by itself is kind of atrocious, but with New Dawn as the final act I like it much better.

Also, horatio is bae and hurk is just worthless. He and the judge were the only ones I couldn't get to rank 3 because it was pulling teeth for them to get an actual kill.

Picked this up on sale, been having a blast. I like the weapon system in 5 better but this is fun for a short romp.
I don't want to accidentally finish the game while I am nook and crannying. I have upgraded prosperity once and there was plot happenings. If I don't upgrade prosperity will that keep the game from finishing? I know you can do stuff after completing the main plot but I tend to lose motivation after the plot is done. So will not upgrading prosperity further keep the plot from ending?

There is no plot event triggered by going from 2 to 3.

I don't yet know if rank 3 is required for the story. I wanted the best guns because I hate bullet sponges so I got to rank 3 before ever setting foot in New Eden.

Finished the game. There is no accidentally finishing it, you have to do main quest after main quest to get there.

I'm really glad that I did most of the open world stuff and got the best weapons before doing the main quest because boy howdy that was some hot garbage I'm glad I could blitz through.

Worst villains in any Far Cry? Maybe. At least the ending and end state of the world is good.

I scavenged an outpost and retook it no problem. I scavenged it again and everyone had a helmet and or a rocket launcher. I tried stealthing in and it worked until I was discovered. Then it was over very quickly. Not in my favor. Lots of fun though. Had to leave the game due to real life so I've been plotting how I'm going to retake it when I get to play again. I guess that means its a good game as it has taken some of my head space.

I forgot armor piercing ammo was a thing until near the end. That made things a lot easier dang.

  • soylenthsoylenth Portland, ORRegistered User regular
although the armor piercing rounds seem to negate the silencer on my supposed stealth sniper. Every time I'd use one to take out a helmeted guard it was like an alarm bell.

  • Lavender GoomsLavender Gooms Tiny Bat Registered User regular
I wouldn't be surprised that, with the way stealth seems to work, in the microsecond between the bullet hitting the helmet and then impacting with his head there's a clang or shout or something that alerts everything in five miles.

Crud I too forgot about ammo types. I tried crafting some and it keeps saying "Full" but nothing seems to happen when I switch ammo types.
If I am full on normal ammo can I craft special ammo? Is it one pool? Do I have to shoot some rounds so I have room for special ammo? Or was I just full on special ammo because I never used it? Also I retook that outpost by stealth destroying the 3 alarms and going to town with a bow and arrow. I used every member of my roster I had with Hakuna Matata the Boar being the most useful. It was a whole mess of fun.

Spending more time trying to adjust my view than actually managing to get any shots on it.

Next time I load up the game, going to see if I can just call in air support to deal with it or just land and blow it up with a damn rocket.

That's just to craft special ammo. If you have some and want to use it you need to go into the weapon wheel and select it. Then you'll get a reload animation and you're ready to shoot through some helmets.

So I finally got around to finishing FC4. I had already finished all the optional missions before I quit playing last time, and there were only 3 or so story missions left.

    My impressions:
The ending sucked and I really wish there was a 'kill all 3 leaders' ending option because they're all terrible tyrants and shouldn't be allowed in leadership positions. I'm pretty disappointed that there doesn't seem to be a way to intern your mom if you kill Min, even though you can totally just go back there and even walk into the room where your sister's ashes are on display.

I wanted a bit more Far Cry action, because as bad as the games stories seem to reliably be, I find the gameplay loop of being a awful murderhobo therapeutic. It turns out that 5 was 60% off on uplay so I bought and started that. 5 is actually running smoother for me than 4, and it's also the first game I've played on my new monitor who's HDR actually impresses me. I didn't get very far before I had to get ready for work, but I manage to stealthily clear a tiny outpost and the gameplay felt pretty great.

So I finished John Seed's territory this weekend. I think I missed some story quests by progressing the zone too quickly. I know I missed the one for liberating the main town, but in the final story quest that started on its own, there's even a main character lady there I have never met.

That's not exactly great design for a game that encourages you to do side content and rewards zone progress for basically everything. I've done all the quests in the zone that I can find and I'm still missing 4 quests somehow.
