The new forums will be named Coin Return (based on the most recent vote)! You can check on the status and timeline of the transition to the new forums here.
The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
The current plan is to attempt to start the Holiday Forums on December 23rd sometime during the day. During this time, the Future State Planning Center will remain open. The Holiday Forum merge will last (if Vanilla cooperates) until January 3rd.

I love my roommate, she's a wonderful person, but she is consistently fucked over by art clients because she has literally never done any research into how to interact with someone when you're doing commissions

I've been trying to get her to show me what she makes people sign before they get her art for months. Today she finally did and oh my god it has nothing in it about reselling her art, or crediting her when distributing, or not altering it. Basically it's just - you're acknowledging your intention to pay me for this art I'm going to do.
She also does very little to ask the client what exactly they want, or to force them to elaborate on specifics, so she often winds up re-doing things and apparently it's never occurred to her that she should renegotiate price if somebody wants her to re-color something or to make a bunch more versions of it!

    There's nice and then there's dumb :/

I would really like to see nuclear rockets used for the next space missions. Under the max speed of an Orion drive, you could get to mars from the sun in something like 2-8 hours?

Well three months with with conventional rocketry is where we're at now.

It really depends on Orion's throughput. The full speed travel time looks like it works out to be something like 6.5 hours. Double that for deceleration at the worst case?

Mars has a relatively thin atmosphere, you could approach it with much greater speed?

During the Pascal-B nuclear test, a 900-kilogram (2,000 lb) steel plate cap (a piece of armor plate) was blasted off the top of a test shaft at a speed of more than 66 kilometres per second (41 mi/s). Before the test, experimental designer Dr. Brownlee had estimated that the nuclear explosion, combined with the specific design of the shaft, would accelerate the plate to approximately six times escape velocity.[9] The plate was never found, but Dr. Brownlee believes that the plate never left the atmosphere, as it may even have been vaporized by compression heating of the atmosphere due to its high speed. The calculated velocity was sufficiently interesting that the crew trained a high-speed camera on the plate, which unfortunately only appeared in one frame, but this nevertheless gave a very high lower bound for the speed. After the event, Dr. Robert R. Brownlee described the best estimate of the cover's speed from the photographic evidence as "going like a bat out of hell!"[9][10] The use of a subterranean shaft and nuclear device to propel an object to escape velocity has since been termed a "thunder well".

This incident was reputedly used as part of the technical justification for the Orion project for possible use of nuclear blasts for outer-space propulsion.

Yeah, I think there is something to be said about your friend just possibly being naive.

Most entrepreneurs tend to have a (or some) mentor(s) as they get started, to help with things like contract structure and what is currently standard practice in a specific market segment.

Also, that isn't to say that some people might just be more enlightened, or had some experiences where they're more inclined to make better contracts or not let people walk over them.
