The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
There's an npc cat in your house, chat with it and it'll let you open up the DLC menu, from there you can download special quests and items and stuff.
However
In addition the the DLC menu there is also a 'gift area' option, which takes you to the Nintendo E-shop where you can download a bunch of free starter items. (I assume the only reason this isn't in the actual DLC area is in case they want to implement eshop purchases later? idk).
I can't remember which of those two options gets you the super mushrooms, but it's one of them.
to get the super mushrooms, you have to go on the eshop, go to the MH4U page, download and apply the patch there, then talk to your cat housekeeper in your room, pick the "downloads" option or whatever it's called, and on the page that leads to there is a button at the bottom of the list that lets you acquire your item pack from the patch. You can only acquire this item pack one time per copy of MH4U.

The intro movie made it look kinda neat but then looking up the convoluted mechanics of it made me go nope. Look I just want to hit shit with big sharp things.
I've been messing with the insect glaive gradually. It's not super complicated. You just have the option to upgrade your insect for different characteristics. There's basically 4 end forms a bug can go and you just sorta tweak it to your preference.

holy god damn
it took someone explaining it to me to figure it out too yeah
and I guess they stopped offering the item pack? oh well. You didn't miss out on anything permanently, there will almost certainly be a regular downloadable quest in the future that has super mushrooms as one of the rewards, like how the first batch of downloadable quests had some that rewards items to make the master sword, hero's bow and hero's tunic items. Those downloadable quests are not on a timer or anything, they should be available for a few years at least.
From what I've read about upgrading the insects, you want to aim for the one with the effect extender ability that doubles how long the buffs your bug gives you last. There's one for both upgrade trees, the bugs with the star next to their name. All other bugs are inferior to those. But to reach those bugs you absolutely need a guide because using regular quality nectars with no plan will never get you there. It's pretty lame, because there's nothing wrong with the other bugs but the effect extender ones are Absolutely The Best Ones.
Also the clockwork one has a special bug and I'm not sure you can evolve it at all.
Stuff like sail or seer can be tricky because of the diphthongs
But like
Nin-ten-do
I don't think I've ever seen a transliterated japanese word that had dipthongs, actually
That's because in Japanese generally each character in a word represents a syllable which is why a lot of their poetry contructs like haiku (the thing that started this whole syllable conversation) use syllable counts instead of rhyming schemes.
Assuming I'm remembering what a diphthong is correctly Japanese does have them, it just doesn't always have them in situations that English would and that can be confusing when you'e learning it. Vowels don't automatically become diphthongs when adjacent in Japanese.
It really highlights how 3D Mario's design has gotten better, in some ways, as time progresses, so things can be super nuts and avoid the pitfall of feeling rote even while holding to a rigid structure
I'd kill to get a similar video about 3D Zelda dungeon/overworld design
Dual Strike then gave us Tag Powers, which basically gives you a turn with one CO's Super Power, and then a SECOND turn with the other CO's Super Power. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78QCb-XLcJw

Vowels don't automatically become diphthongs when adjacent in most dialects of English either. Of course on the flipside, some dialects of English actually have 'tripthongs' as opposed to diphthongs in a lot of words.

i'd almost argue that 3d land/world hold themselves a little too tightly to that structure
gradual ramp-ups are generally a good thing but eeeeevery now and then it's fun to just get thrown into the deep end

Yeah this is so cool and it's one of the things I appreciate most about Nintendo: they are nuts about adaptive soundtracks
Music is so important to the way I experience Mario and Zelda, oh man
The first time I did the ball-rolling in Mario Galaxy? That was actually the first time I was aware of a game changing its soundtrack to fit my actions rather than just my locaiton and it blew my mind
Galaxy had to do a lot of technical work to do that stuff too, since they were using a fully orchestrated soundtrack instead of something they could control programmatically like MIDI or chiptunes.
Skyward Sword actually had the same thing going for it! The Hyrule Symphony orchestra did a ton of that soundtrack, though I don't know exactly how much

Days of Ruin decided to cut back on the escalating powers, but it kept regular CO Powers and gave them this amazing theme:

I feel like if they looked at the best parts of 1 and 2 they could absolutely kill a third one.
I just mean a new objective-based Mario
MARIO SUNSHINE 2
