[Marvel Heroics] Young Avengers: The Rising Tide (GAME ON!)

For weeks, we couldn't turn on a TV or look at a webpage without seeing them.

The Avengers.

The Mighty Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Tony Stark "A.k.a Ironman", Captain America, the archer guy and Agent Romanova. They filled our screens, became the talk of the news, morning, afternoon, evenings, and late night. They were called "The Heroes of New York City" during the battle.

But what did they save us from? Aliens, sure. But while everyone worshiped this heroes high in their tower, the world below suffered.

SHIELD tried to collect all the alien tech that fell from the skies during the battle, but there was so much. You could see it everywhere, on the black market, in people's houses, two people robbed banks with one of the Chitauri Guns. I think one of the car companies tried to make a car with the engines from the alien ships. But you have to get it to SHIELD... they did keep the bad guys hiding...

Except they were the bad guys. They where Hydra, some Nazi offspring, bent on ruling the world. The very stuff we've been telling the public for years. But with Big Brother gone, the other bad guys came out in full force to profit from their destruction. People don't want to believe it. But the internet doesn't lie well. There are too many reports, too many cameras, too few liars to cover up the truth. The Avengers were a distraction. A light to blind us from the waters of Chaos that rise around us. They aren't heroes. They were the little boy with their finger in the dike. But the cracks are growing. The water is rushing in. And soon we will all drought in the Rising Tide. Who will save us then?

-Excerpt from the Rising Tide website

Welcome to the Young Avengers game, using the Marvel Heroic Roleplaying System. This game takes place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, after the events of The Avengers and Captain America: The Winter Soldier and during the same time period as Agents of SHIELD, Daredevil, and Avengers: Age of Ultron. However, you don't need to be caught up on those films to be able to play this game.

After the Battle of New York and SHIELD's secrets being leaked to the internet during their fall, the world has become a dangerous place. From mega corporations and backyard scientist trying to recreate Chitauri tech and genetic alterations, to terrorist groups operating more openly with SHIELD being disbanded, and the news still reporting on possible the possible returning of the Chitauri, the threat of the Asgardians, and other things to boost ratings, it's a wonder people don't believe the world is on fire. But there is a small panic in the air, and it wouldn't take long for some hotshot or escaped lab rat to stir the pot until it explodes. The world needs heroes. And inspired by the Avengers, the youth are more than glad to take up the tights and capes and step up. But will their lack of experience kill them? And what of their lives outside of being a hero? That's what this game is about.

To play, I'd like you to create a teenage superhero, which can be an existing hero (except those already established in the MCU) turned teenage or a brand new hero you want to play. Character Creation rules (sort of) are in the Civil War event but they do a random character generator thing that has you rolling dice on tables and it's pretty crazy. Anyone who wants to do that, I have the book and can walk you through it. Otherwise, we can do a thing where you come up with a character and we'll see about fitting their powers with the system.

Your characters are teenagers so that means that they will also have to deal with things outside of being a hero, so think about doing a non-combat powerset or specialties when creating your characters. You won't need much, as you will be going against the Doom Pool when rolling social (NPCs will just have SFXs for social stuff). When writing their backstory, include some of their friends, family, problems. They could be important as this game goes on.

The story will take place in New York City, 3 years after the Battle of New York, or "the Incident" as the locals are calling it. Most of the city looks like a large construction zone, with buildings being fixed or rebuilt. Many police officers lost their lives in the battle, which has left them severely undermanned since. Crime is not only getting larger, it's becoming more chaotic, with new weapons falling into criminals and the desperate. Most don't go out at night, even more so now then ever before. It's a dark time for New York City.

I'm going to keep sign ups open as long as people want in. We'll start maybe a week from now (depending on how this goes).

I was thinking maybe Victor Mancha, but I don't know if that fits your vision (pun intended) if Ultron hasn't been dealt with yet.

Damn, and I love Victor too.

The time frame is debatable. I can go a few months ahead of AoU if that helps. Maybe another Hydra project who got data from a partly destroyed Ultron bot?

I'm in. I haven't played the system before but I'd like to try an original character.

So these are my favorite two concepts right now, I could go either way. Actually I have a few others too, but those were the ones I really liked.

Displaced martial arts warrior from one of the Seven Capital Cities of Heaven. Good for the "fish out of water" type character. I was thinking same city as Bride of 9 Spiders, obviously he wouldn't be that cities' Immortal Weapon. Would just have to figure out why he's on Earth.

A Darkforce user somewhat haunted by his powers. Good outsider character full of teen angst.

Hmm. I'm thinking Zoe Carter, daughter of Dr. Jack Carter, SHIELD medical researcher. In New York the day of the Chitauri attack, one of their speeders crashed a couple feet from her, and after the pilot stumbled out, she grabbed a piece of the debris to shield herself. The shots kinda penetrated, but not really, and when he/it stopped she tried to whack him with the chunk of alien metal. She lost her grip almost immediately, and ended up just punching the thing, which oddly enough sent it to the ground, twitching.

So I'm thinking she's got a mental-condition ray melded to her arms, works better when she's touching the target, and a boosted physical stat or two, plus a Rebellious Teen powerset for some non-extraordinary powers. No secret identity, since I'm not interested in doing that stuff, but she does have to deal with her dad, which produces a . . . special relationship with SHIELD.

  • Ken OKen O Registered User regular
    Adding to the first idea.

When the Hydra files were leaked the remaining loyal SHIELD agents discovered a 16 year old boy that had been listed in their research lab for the past year. Known only as The Majestic Orb Spider claims he is from one of the 7 Capital Cities of Heaven and was training to become their champion. Research into Hydra's extra-dimensional experiments lead SHIELD agents to believe the young man's claims.

Majestic Orb Spider was given the identity of Li Wei Smith and placed with a SHIELD family. Until he was able to be returned home they began trying to integrate him into society as best as possible. Majestic Orb Spider is an incredible martial artist showing strength, speed, and stamina that match or exceed the best human SHIELD agents. He also possesses a chain whip of a metal that matches no earthly elements. The whip seems bonded to him and seems to stretch at his command.

So high fighting level. Low level strength, reflexes, and stamina. Magical chain weapon. If Cap is good with it, we could even work out Dr. Carter being the foster family.

Eh, Jack has his hands full with his job and raising a teenage daughter by himself. I figure SHIELD agents' children all go to one school, though, so Zoe could know Li through that. Maybe he was with her in New York.

Would Jack still be a SHIELD Agent after SHIELD fell? Or would he now be working elsewhere?

So for Majestic Orb Spider, we can start with Iron Fist's datafile as a starting reference.

    Issue 0
I figure Li would just be starting school when the game starts. Maybe first or second week there if that works. The story that he has come from a small village in Nepal.

    Supporting characters
Foster Parents: Thomas and Jillian Kane
Original teacher: Master Chen, the Earth Spider

A bit of background. Spoiled because it is probably too long and rambling. Sorry.

Thomas and Jillian met on the job. They seemed an odd paring; one worked in Shield’s computer network security and the other was an armed to the teeth field agent. Thomas had been recruited before he even graduated MIT while Jillian had spent 6 years active duty before getting the call. The two met early in their Shield careers and were married weeks before the Battle of New York. When Shield fell, it was a blow to everything the two of them knew. Thomas bounced back quickly, his skillset was always in demand and it wasn’t long before he found a well paid position in the CIA. Jillian remained working with a small cell of Shield agents, they still believed in the cause.

One of the leaked Hydra documents listed the capture of a 15 year old male. Jillian’s team tracked down where the operation had moved and assaulted the makeshift base. Once the Hydra agents had been captured or disposed of they found the prisoner. He had been sitting on the floor of a 5 by 5 cell in meditation when the group came in. The sounds of gunfire and combat didn’t seem to faze the boy. Back at the cell’s base of operations they quickly learned the boy’s story.

He was named the Majestic Orb Spider and was from a mystical city called the Kingdom of Spiders. Hydra had somehow managed to pull him from the Kingdom of Spiders to their research center. It would be years before the Kingdom would be accessible through a portal that appears in Nepal’s Valley of Gates. It was all very hard to believe, but Jillian had fought aliens at the base of the Empire State building and seen the Norse God of thunder in action. But Jillian didn’t see an alien or a god in front of her, she saw a 16 year old boy who was trying his best to not look confused and scared by his situation.

Thomas had been a hard sell. Convincing him that they should foster an other-worldly warrior monk in their own home wasn’t an easy task. They spent nights debating it with some of the arguments becoming heated. When Thomas finally met the newly named Li Wei Smith his resolve quickly faded. The boy was moved into the house and quickly fell into a new routine. Li spent his mornings meditating, his afternoons starting a backyard garden, and his nights training. After a month the Kane’s realized if Li was going to be living in New York they were going to have to enroll him in school.

Your Uncommon Powers are Animal Control, Shapeshifting, and Size-Changing all at d8. Sounds like a Druid-like character...

Ok, so you have two SFXs and Two Limits for your first Powerset and one SFX and one Limit on your second. Denada, you have two SFXs and Two Limits on your Powerset.

Here are Core SFX and Core Limits. While the Power Traits define the power, the SFXs and Limits give it flavor, so think about the Power Traits and how you might use your SFX. Like with Plant Control and Animal Control, the SFX Area Attack would work well as you can call up plants and animals to swarm your enemies. Limits are ways that you and your foes can shutdown your powers. Exhausted could work for both of you guys with your similar power types. Shutting down your own powers gives you Plot Points which can be used to boost other actions.

Once you decide on your SFXs and Limits, we'll move on to Specialties.

    Looks good so far.

For Specialties, you can roll a 1d10 to see how many you have. Being that you have Uncommon Powers, you may also take Cosmic Expert d8 for free (should your character know about his Shrull origin.)

    I'll take the Cosmic Expert.

Geth, roll 1d10 to determine my specialties.

    to determine my specialties.:

You get three Expert (d8) Specialties. Specialties are like DnD skills.

Now, you could roll to see what they are (which would be 3d16) or pick 3 from the following list:

Acrobatic, Business, Covert, Crime, Law, Media, Medical, Menace, Military, Politics, Psych, Science, Streets, Tech, Vehicle, Wilderness.

The ones in bold are ones I've found online and thought "What the hell, let's throw them in for shits and giggles."

We'll keep going random. I wouldn't mind Combat as a specialty, but we get what we get.

    Geth, roll 3d16 for specialties.

    specialties:
    3d16 28 [3d16=15, 12, 1]

I'm seeing Science, Vehicle and Acrobatics.

That's going to be fun to work into a back story for a half-skrull animal-shifter.

So non-human with plant control, teleport, and mimic ... are there fairies in marvel? Hmm or maybe some kind of Asgardian?

Edit: Yeah GG I've got the generator PDF.
