    Hoooooly shit...

So, my shrink recently told me that, in order to stave off the urge to off myself or others, I should listen to dance music at the beginning of my day, whilst preparing to get swole.

Yes, my shrink is in fact what the kids call a bad bitch.

Anyway, I built a Prince/Timberlake/Pharrel station on Pandora. Because I'm real old-like, see? There's a strangely large amount of oldschool hip-hop on this station.

I just got my face rocked off by Eric B. & Rakim. Where's this shit been all my life?

But it was kinda super stupid on his part as well

Oh, I agree - I know there are times when I've watched his videos and made faces

But I think that tends to happen when you have a deeper understanding of a specific zone of history than he can cover in a twelve minute crash course video on the subject? I've always watched them with the thought in the back of my mind that this is a neat way to get people engaging with ideas and history, not necessarily the most accurate way of understanding any given period

The civil war battle episode seemed mostly like he was just being openly snarky to people who get mad about how little the series focuses on wars and battles instead of their broader context

Honestly I haven't even been doing bodyweight, just jogging and biking.

But when I start uni in the autumn I get to use their gym which'll be bitchin'

Yeah form is always something I am concerned with

I need to do a session with the gym people that'll go over their gear and such, maybe I'll just ask if they can give me a form tutorial for the main exercises I'll be wanting to do (probably not SS)

well they went out of their way to make the episode bad because they didn't want to do one on the battles

even a map showing a colored indicator (for the victor) as he went over the timeline would have added some context to the information dump

why even bother giving in to doing a battles episode if they're going to put no effort whatsoever into it

I agree. But we gotta keep on keeping on. In my case, I have a friend who has been to WAY too many funerals to let her outlive me. I mean I want her to live a long and healthy life, but, she needs a funeral break. I don't ever want her going to mine.

But I agree otherwise. Life is a fucking piece of shit and I can't go into any further details because I don't want to get banned.

Because winning and losing the battles in the ACW isn't as important as most people think. Lee won a lot of battles. But in the process he lost a larger percentage of his forces then the generals he faced did. You can win lots of those battles but they generally lose you the war. Honestly, if you have interest in the battles at the tactical level then great but if I were teaching a survey course on American History, I'd look at the campaigns. Even if I was teaching a survey course on say American Military History I'd still be looking at the campaigns.

It seems like a shitty thing for him to do but generally there isn't a great reason to go into super depth about the battles.

I loved when Pete doused himself in white powder and became a war boy. Really a satisfying way to end his whole character arc.

Some people do crazy things when their hair falls out. If Pete needs to huff spray paint and go on killing sprees in the desert to cope with it, then who are we to judge?

Well I mean the trial bits were shot from the jury box. I think the intent was for us to do exactly that. Or perhaps it's a statement about the inability of the viewing audience to be impartial.

I think John Green's crash course videos would annoy me 99% less if he just spent an extra 15 seconds of the video pointing out that actually this is mostly talking about a couple of interesting intepretations. Like, "Hey, this historian had this novel interpretation of such-and-such issue!" Poof, no real problem.

But instead he keeps presenting pop history writers' works as like, the definitive account, and then I just get annoyed at how not-true that is, even though I've got nothing against the idea itself.

Are you talking about Crash Course History Season 2? Cause what you describe it explicitly the point of that series and it's made rather clear. Every time he brings up such and such interpretation of events he talks very clearly about who said it.
