Not really, did it on my first game.

Yeah not too bad once you get used to it. I just wish you could save.

I finally managed to unlock the arcade mode! It just took persistence and a (heh) slight adjustment in difficulty. Too bad it's not quite as fun as the standard mode. I wish they gave you a bonus for spelling out specific words like they do in Bookworm... that would have given the arcade mode more purpose.

This is one of the things I'm most eager to try out. The video of it in action just looks so intuitive.

With basic calender abilities with DSOrganize, Comic Reader, web browsers, movie/music player, and of course amazing games, the DS has become my ultimate portable anything. Hell I could do without lugging my laptop around if I just want to find a wi-fi spot for quick e-mail check.

Comic Book DS is as slick as it looks. I was quite impressed. Just don't hit select if you don't have a DS Lite. It kills the backlight and you have to restart the system to get it back on. (It's supposed to adjust DSL brightness.) I only wish I had something to read on it. :(

On the subject of e-Book readers, I downloaded an app called DS Book, but to be honest, I don't think I've even tested it yet. (Still too busy trying to get other things running.)

    Got my R4 finally!

All I want is a functional FTP server for my DS so I can actually mess with it without disassembling it. DSFTP runs but the configuration instructions are awful, and when I try to follow them it doesn't work. I can set up enterprise-level servers and networks but this thing is defeating me :(

Can someone with DSFTP working please show me what your flash card directory structure looks like? When I start the app it says it can't find the .conf file, but I've put it in /data/settings like I'm supposed to.

ftp.conf goes in your /data/settings/ in your root, I think the nds goes in the root too.

Also, it hates all forms of wireless security, so you'll have to disable WEP :(

Yeah I've turned off WEP already. I can sort of connect to the server once it starts but it complains that it can't find my config file. The NDS file is at h:\ and the config is at h:\data\settings\ftp.conf so I think I'm doing it right.

I was reading through the thread again, and I guess I'm a bit unsure on the necessity of Moonshell. Do you need an app like this to load up homebrew stuff, or is it just something to make tings easier? I was under the impression DSOrganize can essentially work that way too, or did I misunderstand?

I've got a Supercard, and the browser's built right in... there's no need for extra software. Moonshell is just nice to have as an added bonus. It offers support for all kinds of file formats, and can even play music and movies; something which Supercard alone can't do.

MoonShell is better than any of the built-in file browsers, by far. And some devices (GBAMP CF/SD, and some really obscure ones) don't have any sort of boot menu built-in, so you need to use MoonShell or something similar if you want a file browser.

DSOrganize works as a file browser as well, but personally I think MoonShell does everything they can both do better. DSOrganize is just so slow.

I heard that you can make something automatically start up on the R4 or M3 Simply by renaming it "default.nds", but I don't have one so I can't test it.

Moonshell is the built-in file browser on many cards. I know my card (EZ-Flash V) has it built right in. It's got a few extra bits added to the Moonshell core (like the code to load stuff onto the Expansion Pack) but it's still Moonshell, if maybe a couple of versions behind (I believe it's based off of 1.51).

To be honest, I thought that this was much more common. Is EZFlash the only company doing this?

MoonShell is built into the M3 Slot-2 devices, but it's separate from the main menu. The M3 Simply and R4 use a variation of MoonShell too, I think.

I still hate them, though. Vanilla MoonShell is still a thousand times better.

I have the R4 on order. What's the difference with the Moonshell packaged with that and the one you can download? I'm turned on to DSOrganize with it's PDA-esque abilities. Moonshell doesn't have that does it?

Just getting some ideas. I suppose playing with various things to see how each works is the best idea.

Does anyone know of any non-Nintendo USB Wifi dongles one might purchase to set up FTP between a DS and PC? It would probably make life easier if I didn't have to swap the microSD card around everywhere when I wanted to switch files around. At the same time, I don't necessarily want the restriction of using only the DS with the dongle.

I feel like I should hop in here and report that I had an opportunity to test out FlashMe's failsafe recovery last week. I don't know how many people still worry about Flashing since Slot-1 cards are so popular, but the good news is: it works.

A friend of mine and his not-quite-fiancee-who's-lived-with-him-for-years both have DS's, and he's got an M3-SD, but no PassMe device since he used mine long ago to flash his DS. He wanted to flash hers as well, so they could both use the M3 without having to invest in a Passcard. So I took my Passcard over and we got to work.

So anyhow, about 15% of the way through flashing, screen goes black. Power off. Tries to power back on, nothing. We're figuring it's bricked, he's flipping out trying to find his EB receipt and warranty. But it's all okay - the secret, it turns out, is to take out the Passcard, then boot it up while holding select and start. Sure enough, it boots to the GBA slot and you can resume flashing.

So as long as you can hold the thing steady enough to not short it out in the first 3 or 4 seconds of flashing, it's pretty much foolproof even if it shorts before getting to 100%. :^:

EDIT: Apparently FlashMe v8 includes failsafe booting from Slot-1 as well as Slot-2? Disregard most of the above then - we were using FlashMe v7.

not nearly enough homebrew software talk going on in here, so i'll start posting what i've come across lately. this one's a gba title that merits your attention:
Motocross Challenge loses publisher, passes savings onto you

Developer DHG Games poured its heart into completing Motocross Challenge. The small studio built the GBA title from the ground up, hoping to one day see the game on store shelves. Despite months of negotiation, however, Motocross Challenge's planned publisher backed out of the project, citing declining GBA software sales. After having invested three years into creating Motocross Challenge, DHG found itself with a finished game and no way to commercially release it.

Not wanting to see its hard work go to waste, DHG has made Motocross Challenge available to the public, offering the GBA ROM for FREE to anyone who will play it. We've already put a couple of hours into the racing game, and it plays a lot like an updated Excite Bike or Motocross Maniacs. There's a slight learning curve with figuring out how to land, managing your boosts, and memorizing the tracks, but it's all worth it when you start hitting ramps at full speed and racking up points with mid-air stunts.

The fact that Motocross Challenge's publisher dropped the game says nothing about its quality. If you are a fan of motocross titles and want to support independent developers who slave over a project for the sake of making a great game, it won't cost you anything but a few minutes to try this one out.

It's very good, but for some reason the EZFlash V+expansion isn't holding its save file properly. It has this problem with a little bit of GBA homebrew, but it's rare. Supposedly a firmware patch is in the works.

Still, damn good game. Basically what Excitebike would have been if they made a SNES/GBA sequel.

How does the EZ-V compare to the R4? In terms of cost, as well as features/quality?

I'm looking into getting my girlfriend a DS sometime in the future and I was considering some homebrew to go along with it. If the EZ-V + 3-in-1 Expansion aren't too expensive, maybe I'll upgrade and pass the R4 along. If it's radically more expensive for not a lot of extra, I'll probably cheap out and get another R4 and hope some other slot-2 solution comes along later.

It's a bit more expensive, and it is slightly less compatable with some homebrew. Like, I can run everything just fine, but I can't (for instance) open .nds programs inside DSOrganize's browser.

Also, it has Moonshell built in, which is nice. Dunno if the R4 has the same.

The thing is, DealExtreme is throwing a microSD card in with the R4 for practically free. But if you need a slot-2 option, the EZFV is probably the cheapest and easiest way to go.

Or you could get an R4 now and get just the expansion pack from the EZFV later if you want. That also works. Needs some extra software to write to the expansion from the R4, but I've heard it works fine.

The wi-fi finder is just an app that searches for hotspots in the area. It tells you whether they are secured or not, their name, stuff like that. It has a much wider range than you can actually connect to them from-- I've spotted hotspots using it that were around a mile away.

Yeah, my wife couldn't figure out why I was so excited about this whole "run stuff on my DS" option and why I wanted to spend money on an M3. Then I showed her that I could convert episodes of the Daily Show and Firefly, make them portable, and watch them wherever the DS is. She thinks it's pretty okay now. ;-)

OK, I'll bite. I gave the game a quick spin last night and came to the conclusion that this, more than anything else, deserves to be called Excitebike 2. It's the same kind of gameplay, with you shifting from lane to lane and adjusting the angle of your bike after you hit ramps. There's even an overheat gauge at the bottom of the screen that lets you kick your bike into turbo for a limited period of time, and when I say "turbo," I MEAN it! Overall, it seems like a pretty decent game. There's no reason on Earth this shouldn't have been made available as a commercial release.

Programming is hard. I've really never been able to go any further than drawing up designs on paper because compilers and things scare me. Maybe I'll curl up with my Visual C++ book tonight and cry.
