Also, WHY has nobody talked more about this? It looks amazing! My Lite is in for repairs at the moment (TEH HINGE CRACK D:) but I'm downloading this puppy as soon as it comes back!

OK, I'll bite. I gave the game a quick spin last night and came to the conclusion that this, more than anything else, deserves to be called Excitebike 2. It's the same kind of gameplay, with you shifting from lane to lane and adjusting the angle of your bike after you hit ramps. There's even an overheat gauge at the bottom of the screen that lets you kick your bike into turbo for a limited period of time, and when I say "turbo," I MEAN it! Overall, it seems like a pretty decent game. There's no reason on Earth this shouldn't have been made available as a commercial release.

Sweet! Thanks for the mini-review. My Lite came back today minus teh crack (but plus a stuck pixel, BOOOOOO), so I'll download it and give it a go.

What's the wi-fi finder, and how well does it work?
The wi-fi finder is just an app that searches for hotspots in the area. It tells you whether they are secured or not, their name, stuff like that. It has a much wider range than you can actually connect to them from-- I've spotted hotspots using it that were around a mile away.

Sorry, let me rephrase. What program in particular is this wi-fi finder?

I guess it sounds like there's a couple? Any comparisons? I don't think I need an FTP app, so if there's a bare bones wi-fi finder that work's well, that would be ace.

I think DS2Key has one built in, if I remember correctly.
Yeah, it does, because DS2Key is just a modified version of sgstair's wifi_lib_test app. The newer versions of that probably work better than DS2Key, though.

    http://akkit.org/dswifi/

Edit: DS2Key needs more love, by the way. Using a DS as a wireless gamepad is fantastic.

Wait, does DS2KEY use a slot1 or slot2 solution? Or does it somehow make use of the DS Download/Play thing? (Is that even possible, currently?)

DS2Key never needs to read from a cartridge (it's loaded entirely into the DS's RAM when it starts), so it can be booted with any homebrew method.

If you have a DS with FlashMe and a compatible wi-fi card (one with a certain Ralink chipset) in your computer, you can use DS Download Play, but the RSA verification prevents it from working on an unmodded DS.

Does anyone here have a success story about fixing a stuck pixel? I mean using homebrew, or voodoo magic, or I don't care what. I've tried a couple of "flash the screen real fast" homebrew programs and they haven't worked, but maybe I haven't found the right one.

I'll send it back to Nintendo AGAIN if I have to, but since this would be trip #3 for my poor Lite (2 cracks and now this) I really don't want to unless it's necessary.

I ran a screen-cycle app for a day and it did nothing. Shame. Luckily I'm not really bothered by it (blue pixel, bottom of screen). I am worried about that darned crack though. BTW, anyone tried those 3rd party shell replacements? How easy they are to install, how durable they are, risk of damage, etc?

I need a little help. I can connect to WFC (Mario Kart) no problem, but I can't seem to connect with any homebrew wifi apps (really I've only tried DSOrganize IRC and web browser so far, but I know those work - for other people).

All of my connection settings on the DS are manual. I'm spewing my bandwidth all over the place (broadcast SSID, no MAC filtering, no WEP or WPA, wide farking open). I know my connection settings work, as I can play Kart online. I know that tons of other people have the online apps in DSOrganize working with my same setup (R4DS). The only thing I can think of is that I just bought my DS. I have heard that newer DS units might be different in some way.

Have any of you guys had this problem? Did you fix it? How?

Do you have DNS servers set up correctly? Try connecting to an IP, rather than a domain name, see if it makes a difference.

I had one of my pixels get stuck blue a while back, I flicked it hard once and it fixed itself. Mine wasn't there when I got the thing though, it just turned up one day.

This method intrigues me. It really works with my typical repair routine, so I'm not sure why I haven't tried it yet.

I guess I would just feel bad about striking my DS. :(

Yeah a dead pixel doesn't light up but a stuck pixel is always lit at a certain colour blue or red for example. Stuck is more annoying than dead!

I hope you guys got some good use out of DS-Scene. They recently changed hosts and now it seems their account is suspended. Barring some kind of DNS mixup, I'm guessing this means the new host is not quite into the homebrew "scene".

I hope they come back up. They were a pretty good source for news and downloads.

EDIT: Nevermind, it seems that they got a small suspension for some overzealous scripts on their site. They're back up and running now.

Here's a quick update for anyone else having the same problem. It turns out that there is indeed a difference with newer DS Lites. Unfortunately the fix is to recompile stuff from the src, which is a little bit of effort for someone who hasn't already set things up for that. I guess this problem will go away on its own as more developers get the word and recompile their libdswifi.

So, after I got home from work today I set out to see what else I could do about my wifi conundrum. I went and got wifi_lib_test, because I wanted to see a bit more detail. Also, in desparation, I changed my router from channel 1 to channel 11.

    Magic happened.

Just got my R4 and I'm having a blast testing it out.

I just watched the Morales v. Pacquiao II fight on the DS and was pretty impressed with the quality. I used it as the basis of the test because of the high speed of the punches, quick camera angle switches, etc, and it was very very watchable and easy to follow.

I didn't see this is the original post, but MoonBooks is a fantastic site that has alot of classic literature and the ReadMore software. They also have an odd collection of older films available as well, but the main purpose of the site are the books. Unless there's some sort of violation, definitely check it out.

I really like the Comic Book Reader. The controls seem a little clumsy sometimes and it takes a little getting used to, but it's pretty much all you could ever need to read comics on your DS.

    Keep updating, I'm still downloading!

What's this "flicking stuck pixels" method about? I have a pixel which isn't entirely stuck, it's just the green component refuses to go totally black, meaning that on a black background there's the tiniest, darkest green dot in the bottom right of the screen. It's impossible to see unless you actually look for it, but fixing it would be nice.

That's what a stuck pixel is (ie, not visible on pure white, the stuck component(s) on black). If it's black then it's dead and you're boned.

I'm not really too well-versed in the mechanics of LCD screens, but when a pixel is always black, does it necessarily mean it's dead? Is it not possible for all three subpixels to just be stuck 'off'?

Though I guess that would be extremely unlikely.

I had a dead pixel on the top screen that developed one day several weeks after I bought my first DS Lite. It would vanish and reappear for what seemed to be no reason at all. I eventually discovered that the pixel flickered when I was using the Nintendo Wifi Connection online. Depending on whether it was stuck or un-stuck when I disconnected the wifi affected how it would be until I next went online with it. It bugged the hell out of me though, so I just replaced the console.

The Quake DS WiFi build prerelease has been posted. This means great things, for those who have someone to play with. According to DS Scene, it includes an onscreen keyboard and increased mod support, but may have worsened performance in the single player mode.

Finally got my R4 in, and I am impressed with the quality of the homebrew apps out there. DSOrganize is what I hoped it'd be. Comic Reader DS is so sleek and professional. SCUMMVM DS is astonishing, it's perfectly intuitive to use the stylus in the way you use a mouse, and these games benefit so well I may have to play through BaSS again.

Still a few things I haven't tried yet but so far this purchase has been well worth it. I'm getting all the functions out of my DS I ever hoped to.

Yes, an R4 will cover pretty much all NDS homebrew. Since it's a slot 1 solution you won't be able to do GBA homebrew. I got my R4 from that dealextreme link people were throwing around for $44. Took about a week and half to ship from Hong Kong, though. It came with a 1 GB microSD card for free basically and really sweet USB adapter for it (this one feels really well made and is metal, not like the green plastic one in the R4 review).

So after trying every homebrew stuck-pixel-fixer I could find without any success, I decided that I just didn't want to deal with it and called Nintendo for yet another repair order (this is #3 - #1 fixed a hinge crack but created a different crack and added the stuck pixel, #2 fixed the 2nd crack but left the stuck pixel) - I'm just hoping this time she'll come back pristine.

On a good note, though, the support guy was awesome - as they have been every time I've called - and upgraded my shipment from standard ground shipping to express shipping for free because of the hassle of multiple repairs I've gone through.

Nothing like that would work, sorry. There's no plug for the weird proprietary ipod control interface for the DS. The only thing you could use is the 3.5 jack, which should still work fairly nicely, but you won't have menu control.
