I was under the impression that Nintendo is still very, very safe
It's not about to collapse or anything, but they've been leaning heavily on favorable currency transfers which isn't a good thing. When you pass the company on to a successor you want to know that the company is in a good place and will be in equally good hands.
Iwata, however, died in the middle of one of their biggest hardware flops since the virtual boy without knowing if the NX would set things back on course. And that kinda sucks! I mean, dying always sucks but it's nice to at least die knowing your successor isn't inheriting a big mess.
It's in transition, but I feel like Iwata has probably already laid... had already... has done the groundwork already. Partnerships with mobile DNA. Amiibo established and integrated, at least as a foothold in most games and markets if not all an overwhelming phenomenon like NA. Who knows what the NX is yet but they've been talking about it for at least half a year at this point which probably means it's been in dev for like two years. So long as the next director isn't a wrecker I think Nintendo's future - while not assured by any means - is at least charted for a while.

RIP Satoru Iwata.
It still sucks to die without seeing if it worked. Without getting to see your plans come to life.
I thought it would be kind of sad to play Splatoon tonight, in the wake of the news of Iwata's death, but seeing all of the messages celebrating his achievements and the general atmosphere of the game actually made it kind of nice. It was really another show of how his influence has shined through to so many people.
Oof. Without him, I feel as if Nintendo might have gone third party after the GameCube.
No kidding. Say what you will about the Wii, it was one of Nintendo's greatest success stories. And that's not even getting into the DS, which had a popularity and library rivaling that of the PS2.
God, I hope his successor carries his passion and heart.

Granted it's one of those super-vague maudlin pop songs that can be about anything you want it to be, but I've listened to this like ten times since I heard the news.
This really knocked me down. Having grown up without many friends, suffering from depression and anxiety, and using video games for escape I can honestly hold iwata responsible for helping me through those times. Looking at a list of games he helped with or was responsible for getting made I can remember exactly where I was in life. I can define my timeline based on what was being played - and he was there every step of the way.
What a terrific man. I may be less of a nintendo fanboy than I used to be - but he is going to be part of my life and memories forever.
It's like losing a family member. RIP iwata.

“I am surprised at this sudden news and overcome with sadness. The entire development team at Nintendo will remain committed to our development policy which Mr. Iwata and we have been constructing together and to yield the development results which Mr. Iwata would appreciate.
I'm really sad to hear the news of this. Mr Iwata really seemed to know what he wanted to do with the company and take it in fun directions. I'll always remember seeing him smiling whenever I saw a picture of him. Rest in peace, Mr. Iwata.
What's that, you weren't already sad enough? Then read this message by Shigesato Itoi:
“No matter the farewell, I think the most appropriate thing to say is “we”ll meet again.” We are friends so we”ll see each other again. There is nothing strange about saying it. Yeah. We’ll meet again.
Even if you didn’t have the chance to put into words how sudden it was going to be, how far you’d be traveling, or how you went much earlier than expected, I know you went wearing your best.
You always put yourself second to others no matter what, helping anyone who needed it whenever they needed it. You were that kind of friend. Although you may have been a little selfish for the first time ever by taking this journey.
The truth is though that I still don’t believe any of it. I feel like I am going to receive a message from you inviting me out to eat at any moment. I wouldn’t mind if you were to ask me like always if I had some free time. If you did, I’d ask you as well.
Still, “we’ll meet again.” It would be great to hear from you whenever and wherever; I’ll being calling to you too. I’ll call if I have something to discuss or I want to tell you a great new idea I’ve had.
We’ll meet again.
Then again, you’re here with me now.”

Miyamoto and Takeda are apparently going to be running the company in the interim until a permanent replacement is named.
I wouldn't worry too much about this causing problems for Nintendo in the short term. I mean, obviously there is a ripple effect any time you lose a high-level executive but the culture of Japanese corporations being what it is and knowing Iwata had had health problems for a couple of years at least I am sure there was a plan to maintain stability and name a successor in place.
I knew he'd been sick and had treatment, but was under the impression he had much improved. This feels like it was out of nowhere, and it fucking sucks. RIP Mr. Iwata, you will be missed.

As a person who owns Nintendo stock, it should be quite interesting to see if investors get spooked and start a sell-off.
On another note, I, like others, have fired up some Balloon Fight. I was doing fairly well (for me) in balloon trip and then...that damn fish.

Don't really have anything else to say. Never do. Just that I feel this is a pretty big loss for gaming.
Fifty-five is just too young.
Iwata got robbed.
Guess that's it. It was a fool's hope that it was a mistranslation or a mistake... but maybe that's the only way I could cope.
Apparently, someone from the Pokemon team had met him recently and said he looked healthy. This is just so sudden.
May he rest in peace.

If one of your first thoughts is "Shouldn't Link be offering a fairy?" then you failed.
it's one of his hearts though, surely that's even more meaningful
What a wonderful and memorable final public display of his fun, good natured personality.
This day sucks.
