Moving to Memphis (or somewhere nearby)

So, with the, uh, situation detailed in my last H/A thread resolved, I'm left to figure out where I want to live. I'm currently staying with my mother and aunt a little ways into Mississippi, maybe 40 miles south of Memphis. The plan is for me to find a place to move to by September 1st, and I'm thinking Memphis is my best bet. I prefer living in a city (especially since I don't drive), I lived in Memphis for ~5 years growing up, it's dirt cheap for a city and I seriously need some savings, etc.

So I guess I just need opinions on the normal 'moving to X' stuff. Neighborhoods, Uber vs. public transit vs. cabs, credit unions, etc. I'm tentatively leaning towards something in the Overton Park to Cooper Young region based on initial research, but I trust opinions here more than on random sites. I work online so living in or even near Memphis isn't necessary, if anyone has alternative suggestions.

Memphis isn't much of a city in terms of public transportation. I suppose if you don't have to commute to any work, you can live pretty much anywhere. Rent fluctuates massively. Both areas you picked can have expensive living places, but not far from them there will be much cheaper living, along with much higher crime rates.

What is this I don't even.

If you're looking to live in midtown - you should check out the Gilmore. It's cheap loft style in a secured building with an Italian grocery store on the first floor - and within walking distance to fun things, food things, and bus stops

I have a friend who can't drive due to seizures - so she relies on taking the Marta. Her only issue has been that it isn't always on time.

(When I say loft I don't mean fancy - it's more like a giant dorm room for one person. One room, bathroom, and a small kitchen)
