I'm kinda surprised we don't have a thread pertaining to the media and the Virginia Tech incident yet, particularly such inaccurate portrayal of videogames as we're used to seeing.
I'm rather surprised shy people are being portrayed as psychopaths now.

"Played Counterstrike: Half-Life [...] Even to the point of dressing up as the hero of the game."
Yeah, the "heroes" being terrorists and counter-terrorists, respectively. Even better is that he refers to them as heroes, despite his firm stance against video game - err, Killing Simulators.
Honestly I couldn't care less if a few people blame the worst school shooting in American history on videogames. I mean, really, this case brings up a lot of questions about our society and gun control and human psychology, and videogames play such an insignificant part in it all that they don't even deserve mention.
It's software.
This goes for everyone, Chris Matthews and G&T included.
"The only limit to my freedom is the inevitable closure of the universe, as inevitable as your own last breath. And yet, there remains time to create, to create, and escape.
I'm rather surprised shy people are being portrayed as psychopaths now.
They're always portrayed as psychopaths.
To this extent though? Chris Matthews practically spelled out "Shy/quiet = Murdering psychopath".
All I've ever heard was the possibility that someone who's shy can be a psychopath in disguise.

The problem is that people will want a scapegoat. Rather than addressing the real problems that contributed to this incident, they will shout "It was videogames! Ban them!".
This is bad for gamers, and it is bad for American society as a whole, because the real problems won't be addressed.
It takes guts to take a stand against the gun lobby. Video games are an easier target, and one that threatens media giants like Universal, Fox, Disney, and Viacom. With this in mind, it's no surprise that a coward like Chris Matthews would pin the blame for the shootings on video games.

Well you know back in Chris Matthews' days they hanged black people for fun so we shouldn't consult him about tolerance.
i don't know what I'm saying but what I'm trying to get at is that he hates blacks people and may have participated in the hanging of some of them earlier in his life.
I'm rather surprised shy people are being portrayed as psychopaths now.
No, psychopaths are being portrayed (and generally actually are) as generally shy people. Not the other way around. There's a difference.
"most bullies chew bubblegum" != "most people that chew bubblegum are bullies".
Just because X -> Y does not mean Y -> X. Way to fall for the same logical fallacy that most of the journalists we talk about in threads like these do.
Oh, I know lots of shy people. Rarely, if ever, have I heard of them being talked about in such a way. Even then, only after they did something particularly strange and worth of mention.

Uh, you're preaching to the choir here...

It seems like even the news media is getting sick of jumping on the video game blame bandwagon. A lot of the coverage focuses on the warning signs that indicated he was going to do harm to himself and others.
Do we actually need this thread, or is everyone just saying stuff we all already know and/or making stupid jokes?
I'm asking this question seriously. It doesn't sound like there's actually any mass media attack on video games as a cause of this tragedy right now, and there's other subforums with VT shooting threads that are more appropriate for general discussion of this topic (D&D, SE++). Does G&T really need a thread on this?

Does anyone have any objections to the statement that some people are idiots that will claim that all violent acts are connected to videogames regardless of the actual evidence? If not, then no.
Are we talking about the same Chris Matthews that ripped Jack Thompson a new asshole on his show today? He stood as a bulwark against conclusion jumping bullshit.
Oh, and everyone should go read this editorial on MSNBC. I'll be clutching it tightly as the media blame machine gets rolling over this situation.

I've seen very very little on games being attacked for this, and that was simply hearsay. If you leave this thread be, I doubt it'll be on topic for long. There's not much to talk about beyond things turning into a Jack Thompson discussion.
These threads never go anywhere because it's just preaching to the choir.
Exploring the other side, sometimes I have to wonder if mentally unstable people should be allowed to play violent video games and watch violent movies. That type of media may have a different effect on someone who is teetering on the edge of sanity. There is something about American culture that contributes to these kinds of events although it is too complex of an issue to start placing blame on any one aspect.
As far as Chris Matthews being a dick... well, that's not a G&T topic either. Feel free to make a thread on that topic in either chat forum, if that discussion is also desired.

Also they also might say he was nice and friendly. I share a lot of those qualities but I'm not motivated enough to got out and kill people.

Yeah, he goes so far as to stop Jack Thompson at every turn.
That just shows us how much he hates video games.
I'm going to go play some CS.
Uh, you're preaching to the choir here...
Nah, just not really that funny of a joke, to be honest. You kinda need to work on your delivery.

Shouldn't we blame Starcraft or Ragnarok online?
I'll fear them if Virginia Tech ever starts building Pylons or requires more Vespene Gas.

I hate how any respect or sadness for these tragedies immediately gets buried in a shit storm of people pointing fingers.
