OK, I'm pulling the trigger so I can get this preloaded on my laptop. What's the right way of going about the purchase? If I buy the digital version from Amazon, can I redeem the key from the Windows store or something - or do I need to do it in the Xbox app?

I'm still stuck on that first Ferrari challenge, no matter how good I drive he somehow gets a head start boost and is faster than me and it's impossible to catch up to him. I'm starting to get sick of that one song.
You should be (very slightly) faster than him in the Lambo, also should be able to get off the line faster if you're holding down the accelerator during the pre-race cut scene. Do you have Sim damage on? That can mess things up from what I've heard. Also, if you have an Elite controller, make sure you don't have the trigger blocks in. Otherwise, you can always crank the difficulty down in the pause menu before the race (I think, not sure where that defaults).
Heads up to those having VIP issues (mainly on PC from what I understand), supposedly they have gotten that sorted for a good % of people, so give it another check. Also for PC people, a Turn10 guy on Twitch chat did say that they are aware of all the performance issues and are working on fixes for their first update, though no ETA.
Hopefully the performance issue stuff gets worked out on PC because it's a wonderfully beautiful and fun game. When it recommends settings for me it's basically ultra everything, with 4x MSAA and I still drop into the high 40s in places-yet, when I drop it down to 2x MSAA and "High" on some settings instead of "Ultra" I actually get worse framerate.

Sucks so many of you are having performance issues Makes me wonder what's special about my machine that I'm not. The only real difference I see is that I have a top end video card, but my CPU isn't much better than most of you are running. Maybe because I only have SSD's in my system? Really tough to say.

I have a GTX 1080, 4790k i-7, 16gb ram and running it off an SSD. And at recommended settings I can't keep 60fps and actually lost fps by dropping settings like I said. It's real strange, so I don't entirely know what the issue is. I'm enjoying myself and it's not that huge of a deal because it's still performing well enough, just not what I feel it should be. I'm sure it'll all be ironed out considering it's technically still not out so I'm not worrying too much really.

Yeah, after turning off GameDVR, I'm sustaining a steady 50-60fps (1080p, everything Ultra, 4xMSAA). i7-4770k, GTX 1080, 32gb RAM, game running off a WD Black drive.

Maybe I won't be playing this on my pc. I figured since I built my PC after I got my xbone it would be good enough. Even when running low or medium settings it says I'm getting good frame rates but there are weird stuttering issues. I turned off GameDVR without much effect.
Does this seem particularly weak? i5-4670 3.4ghz, Geforce GTX 760, 16gb ram, not running on SSD

Moreso the graphics card than the SSD, but you're two generations behind on graphics cards and that wasn't even the highest one of it's generation. The SSD is just great for loading and other quality of life stuff.

Agreed. You could have the best SSD on the market, you'd still have your framerate issues.
I didn't think the SSD would matter, but I thought I would mention it. Looking at the Xbone specs and my PC specs, to me, it seems pretty comparable. Maybe there is something to that whole "coding to specifically made hardware" thing.
I'm fine playing this on my Xbone, I just thought it would be nice if I could play it on my PC.

So, I've tried using Shadowplay's "Allow desktop capture"...and the only way it'll actually record FH3 is if I'm in windowed mode. Fullscreen/borderless window and it refuses to record. That is......a bit annoying.

This but with the Meyers Manx. I still don't want to drive anything other than that stupid little thing. Even if it isn't the fastest (I have a One:One for Speedtrap hunting). Or the most stable in jumps (see the following video of a lap of a race at the Lumbermill, especially the very end). https://youtu.be/bPw3diRXk1k

I think I've decided I don't like driving this game with a wheel. It's just way, way too floaty. The steering response near the center is clearly tuned for controllers not wheels. It's like driving around in a Formula 1 car with no front wing, 100% of the time. Cars don't want to turn in, and when you over-correct to cause the car to rotate, the rear end catches and causes massive oversteer. I think it's just the way they've tuned the model to be very rear end heavy so you can drift and slide all over, which is a ton of fun...but doesn't feel good with a wheel to me.
I guess I could get in to tuning the cars and giving them a lot more front grip via ride height, spring and tire pressure changes...but at some level I feel I'm fighting upstream, against the physics model they've implemented. I may have a gander at some of the settings again as well to see if I can tighten up the steering response near the center.

Ahh...that'd be why I didn't understand the statement. Aside from the whole GameDVR hitching (most likely due to recording at too high a setting) and not being able to Shadowplay, it's been smooth sailing for me.

I don't believe for a second that it's a garbage fire for most people. The internet takes every possible negativity and turns the dial to 11, completely blurring whether a problem is really wide spread or just a set of vocal yellers. Experience tells us it tends to be the latter far more than the former.
Also, our definitions of garbage fire must be different. Batman: Arkham Knight was a garbage fire. Mortal Kombat XL was a garbage fire. This is, at worst, a small grease fire at the diner.

I'd say the problem is wide spread considering it's on a multitude of systems and the best solution seems to be "well, set it to frame lock at 30fps I guess?" That doesn't make it much better than the X-Box One version, really.
I mean, you can call it what you want-but seeing as how a large base of pre-release buyers seem to be experiencing SOME issues is concerning enough. I don't think there's a blurring here, it's a very real problem that even they have acknowledged. Yeah...that's a problem.
I actually had a better frame rate in Arkham Knight on PC than I do on this. So, anecdotally, it's a much bigger problem to me currently.
Seeing as how I have a system with a "top end gpu" as you described, and I'm having major problems...yeah, I'd say that's a garbage fire seeing as how I'm operating on a pretty high end PC and getting pretty garbage end results with it on PC. Now, the One version is fine and I'm actually preferring playing that as of late. Which is real sad considering my rig is a little over 4 times the cost of a One.

If worst case scenario is running it at 30fps so it looks better than but has the same framerate as the XboxOne version, how is that a garbage fire? Sounds more like "can play the xb1 game on my PC" to me, which was the base objective. It might not be the amazing miracle that everyone running ultra at 120+ fps would have been, but having to run at 30-45 fps or sub ultra settings doesn't say flop to me.
---
Update from me, only got to play about 15 minutes with my new GTX 1060 (had company) but on High it held 60 fps no problem (60hz monitor V synced). Looks amazing. Once or twice it felt like there was a momentary syrupy lag feeling very briefly but not enough to be certain it happened until I play more. The upgrade menus did have some noteworthy hesitation as mentioned by others, but I'm impressed by how quickly you can go from tuning to painting to back in the world.
Can't wait to play all day tomorrow >:D

Hyperbole doesn't change the fact that people can't hold a steady 60 with a high end pc. It's fine that you don't think that, but enough people do to warrant an official response from the dev.

I'm just going to toss this out there: there are a bunch of games where I can't hold a steady 60fps on max settings. That doesn't mean that those other games are a dumpster fire. It's a possibility (in the case of Arkham Knight), but it's not a certainty. To be honest, I'm a bit surprised at the response. I mean, they aimed for scalability (who wants to play a XB1 game at XB1 graphical settings on a high-end PC?), and that's what happened. If you have an absolute beast of a system, crank the game's settings. If you don't, tone down the settings until things run sufficiently well per your demands.
In this case, it's sounding like people are more running into the issue that when T10 listed their "minimum" specs, they really were the minimum specs as opposed to being "okay, yeah...this isn't really the minimum...but we're covering our asses here if you run into performance problems."

Hmm...most common issues I've heard are:
Game won't install/I don't have Win10 Anniversary
Game has poor performance in spite of my system that can run other games at high/max settings
Are there other issues that are outside the scope of those two? If there are, I just haven't seen them yet.
