Undertale (and also MSPA): Notorious T.E.M.

it feels niche because it speaks to people that the videogame industry largely ignores, but are more numerous that it realizes
And while this isn't mutually exclusive, there's also a lot of stuff in the game that either references or subverts expectations you have from playing games, so if you are really conversant in gaming it also has that appeal.
Undertale is a game that speaks to a certain demographic of the internet that Tumblr - a social media/content sharing/blog site - is popular with. This demographic tends to be some combination of young, artistic/creative, female, queer, or just anyone who enjoys consuming positive, heartfelt media.
It's a group that is relatively poorly represented in traditional circles, but engage one another through sites like Tumblr and Twitter, and by creating fan content and headcanons (personal interpretations of the game's world and characters) build a community that generates regular word of mouth and longevity.
I guess if that Undertale sales trends graph from last thread remains accurate, Undertale interest will never die off. It will remain a subject of moderate discussion forever.
You could say that every day from the start of Homestuck, up until it ends.

Unfortunately, in a tragic coincidence, the day that Homestuck ends and Andrew Hussie is finally free just happens to be the day that Frisk resets the timeline.

I wanna see one of the later incarnations of the timeline where Hussie's gotten the whole thing worked out for maximum efficiency and can release the entirety of Homestuck in less time than it took for all of Problem Sleuth. And he's become a world-class piano player, despite only taking one lesson each go-around.
I'm looking to get a shirt screenprinted with a picture of Flowey (not for sale, for myself). The company has asked me if it is my own art work. It isn't, it's pixel art from the game, and I am sure that such a thing has been given permission. Toby has said that one off fan-art commissions are ok and I am assuming that getting a shirt screenprinted falls into the same exception. What's the best way to explain that, as I am feeling like my current attempts to give an answer sound fannish and the company probably would prefer a professional answer.
I have emailed Toby since being able to show the company a clear 'yes' directly from the creator would be best but who knows if I will get an answer.

I'm surprised they care for a single shirt, they must be a very artist's rights-conscious sort of t shirt company or there's been more enforcement of bootleg t shirt designs recently. Or else they wanted to know if they could license the design from you. Or the question was just a formality and they'll just take you at your word. I wouldn't be too worried about sounding professional, a place that does single custom t-shirt orders can't be all that big and formal can it?
E: or is this just an online form? If it is you can ignore it and say you own it, that's just their due dilligence so they aren't as liable if someone uses them to print and sell copyrighted material, so they have it on paper that the customer explicitly claimed to them it was not infringing. And if you are just printing one shirt and by some miracle you get sued for it you're only liable for the cost of one shirt so who cares.
I have no idea what their reason is for asking is as their email was literally just the question. I am assuming they are wanting to cover their butt/possibly sell extra copies.
I'd start by just emailing back that you're not the artist but you have the artist's permission for a single shirt, and that you can provide more details if they want.

It's not a bad game.
It just seems so... niche.

It's tumblr as fuck.
It's weird how the video game industry has become kind of a lumbering dinosaur.
But, that's why the Indie market is doing so well.
As it turns out, when you make a good game that caters to demographics that don't get much attention, people open their wallets.
And while this isn't mutually exclusive, there's also a lot of stuff in the game that either references or subverts expectations you have from playing games, so if you are really conversant in gaming it also has that appeal.

NCH, who does great Monster Hunter vids, is on this too now.
The person who did this is a sadistic genius and I LOVE IT.
Now we wait until Undertale starts to become old and Homestuck finally updates, and everything flip flops.
and we will forever be closer to the end of homestuck than we ever have been.

Reload and say you do own it
Might be longer than a few days for a reply!
