2015. A better year for movies than some, but as always, some disappointments do happen. Tomorrowland was another paragraph in the argument that Brad Bird is a closet Objectivist. Jurassic World was a loud, ugly, misogynist bit of crap. Age of Ultron was a jumbled, overlong bit of fluff that did some damage to characters we liked, but Ant-Man was a delight and a surprise, as was Mission: Impossible 5. But I think we all know who really won the summer; just ask the National Board of Review, who just named it the Best Film of 2015:

    Oh good new thread.

I finally got around to watching Scott Pilgrim vs The World yesterday. What a well put together movie! I'm not so familiar with the source material, but as far as a gamer/music nerd mashup goes, I was well pleased. The only bit that I found off putting was:
the tickling of the back of the knee to vanquish the lady ex. Just seemed like a weak way of disarming a female character.

Is that straight from the source or did they make it up for the movie?

I also watched 47 Ronin last night. Love me some Keanu. I'll be watching John Wick finally soon. I'm pretty excited about that.

The movie is super compressed compared to the comic book. Roxy takes up one of six volumes of the story
Their first encounter in the film is pretty much a re-creation of the scene in the comic. But then there's an encounter where Scott and Ramona run from Roxy before Ramona fights her for a while, then there's a big fight between Roxy and Knives' dad (who isn't even in the film) and then finally Scott and Roxy have a samurai showdown where Scott pulls out his heartsword and they do the "rush at each other and long slash, before one person falls over" kind of thing.

In-between all these encounters is plenty of character building and whatnot.

    In the book
she explodes into bunnies instead of coins.
It's still a little patronizing but it's much gentler in the book. I agree that part of the movie is pretty dumb.

How much money has the US government spent to get Matt Damon back? (movie wise)
He was lost in Saving Private Ryan, lost in the Bourne series, Lost in Interstellar, lost in The Martian......

Also I watched Breaker Morant for the first time. A lot to unpack there. Of course there's the basic story, but the way it's put together is just brilliant as layers keep getting peeled back to reveal the truth. It's like Rashomon without all that frustrating ambiguity.

And then the bit at the end where
the two men walk to their deaths hand in hand, refuse the blindfolds, and Morant tells the soldiers "shoot straight you bastards, don't make a mess of it!"
    . Tears in my eyes.

47 Ronin was fun, though no where near as interesting to me as John Wick. The visuals were pretty great in both, though.

I realized how much I enjoyed Mad Max: Fury Road after i kept thinking about watching it after I had checked it out of a movie box. So I recently ordered it and it's on its way. Along with Outlander, AKA Beowulf but with Space Jesus.

I'm very wary of pronouncing a movie to be empty, and yet... Am I missing something with The Departed I haven't discovered after three viewings?

Like, as a story it certainly has emotion and tension and entertainment value; but it doesn't seem like it says anything beyond "fuck rats" or maybe "fuck Boston".

Yeah but at least most of those have the traditional rise and fall structure that at least says "Don't get greedy and do bad shit because crime doesn't pay". In The Departed they don't really have much of a rise, and the fall hits good and bad alike. There's not the usual playing up of the sweet-but-morally-costly life, the way there is in Goodfellas or Wolf of Wall Street or whatever.

Most gangster movies say, "This is an alluring but hollow existence", but Departed is just hollow.

The Departed basically gave a message that you're not safe (everyone), and you aren't special (Leo/Damon being either side of the coin). It's goal was also to show how fluid everything between the two sides are. The only seemingly good guy in the movie was The Illusive Man, and then he gets tossed off a building (maybe someone with enough paragon or renegade points convinced him to jump).

It's definitely not the movie Marty Score should have won the oscar for, someone will make a time machine and give Goodfellas it's proper due. I'm guessing he got sick of losing all the time and quietly started a rumor around Hollywood he had severe butt rot and that would be his last movie.

"Organized crime, and the way we try to fight it, will fuck over everybody in the end."

But mostly, it's not a huge message movie or a sprawling epic so much as a personal movie where things end badly.

I doubt you're missing anything, it's just not really your bag.

My takeaway was that everybody loses. Some Ecclesiastes shit.
