Hooking a surround sound subwoofer to your home stereo

Hello everyone. I have a newbie question about my surround sound. It's a Sony STR-DH70 and needs a powered sub which the one I have has gone bad. Would it be possible to use my Sony home stereo's Auxillary port to feed the sub thru my stereo until I can purchase a new powered sub? Good bad or idea?
