Exactly! We show you how your defenses could be improved and in exchange we take your wealth!
Yet, in the face of this affront to our nation, Edinburgh and Scotland remain resolute. We refuse to match this act of agression in kind. Edinburgh rejects military conscription.
In reality, we did not really need to create mandatory conscription. Swindon's actions led to a rush by the Scotish to defend the country. Voluntary enlistment in the Scottish National Army has soared, as is natural when a country is attacked by a foreign enemy. In addition, Edinburgh announced a new immigrant policy, granting immediate citizenship to any immigrant willing to voluntarily enlist. The results of both actions have led to a rapid growth in our military without needing to resort to conscription.
The Scottish people were once under the unlawful rule of the English before, and we are none too keen to return to that way now.

Swindon chose: Accept
Sheffield chose: Reject
Edinburgh chose: Reject
Birmingham chose: Accept
Trades this round: None.
Steals this round: Swindon steals one wealth from Edinburgh!
Cities which chose to accept military conscription signed their men and women into their local army, swelling the ranks against the coming tsunami and gaining a military point. However, this method does not sit well with some residents of the country and a morality point is lost at the idea of being forced to sign up, even if it is considered for the greater good.
Cities which chose to reject military conscription let their residents breathe a sigh of relief at not being made to sign up, gaining a morality point. This does have an impact on their military strength and preparations for the coming tsunami are slow and riddled with problems, losing a military point.
The people of Sheffield are roused by their Environment Minister's speech of investing in freedom of their youth and thus gain an education point, as the young people of Sheffield are made aware of the rights they do and do not have in this brave new world.
The residents of Birmingham are impressed by their Environment Minister's thorough plans to rotate those in the military, their evacuation of individuals and infrastructure plans. This inspires a new work ethic reassured by the productivity of their city leaders, and production soars, gaining a production point.
The people of Swindon rejoice in their strong military which is able to "help" Edinburgh and boost their own economy at the same time, their project GUNDUM testing their military might and gaining further knowledge, increasing their education by one point.
The residents of Edinburgh are dismayed to find their city's fiances diminished in some sort of military training exercise with Swindon...? They're not really sure. But what is known is that their open arms and hearts not only brings those voluntarily into their military and city, but attracts health and aid workers, gaining one health point.

Its Japan you hear about first - they’re used to natural disasters, floods, earthquakes, tsunamis and take it in their stride. Some things are a little more unexpected and difficult to be calm about though. All over the world reports flood in like the seas at once. Panic, fear and confusion as mass attacks take place capturing people unaware and defenseless.
Great pearl coloured pods a meter across appear on the beaches, their stingers dragging their paralysed victims into the sea. They cannot move, they cannot fight, nothing can be done. They are part of something, something larger, and something rising from the depths...
Below the thunders of the upper deep;
Far far beneath in the abysmal sea,
His ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep
The Kraken sleepeth: faintest sunlights flee
About his shadowy sides; above him swell
Huge sponges of millennial growth and height;
And far away into the sickly light,
From many a wondrous grot and secret cell
Unnumber'd and enormous polypi
Winnow with giant arms the slumbering green.
There hath he lain for ages, and will lie
Battening upon huge seaworms in his sleep,
Until the latter fire shall heat the deep;
Then once by man and angels to be seen,
In roaring he shall rise and on the surface die.
It is total war. A strong city needs wealth, morality and military.
In Edinburgh things do not go well, their incredibly low finances (perhaps not through their own fault) are their downfall. While their morals are strong and their military middling it is not enough, they cannot afford to hold up their own army and people against the invasive spawn and collapse, heading south with only a few resolute few staying - the people of Edinburgh are strong and trustworthy, the cities which they flee to are grateful to have these honest Scots to help them.
In Birmingham they do a little better, after all their wealth is vast and this makes up for their mid military.. for a while. The people of Birmingham are jaded, too long has their city and Environment Minister created situations which do not sit well with the residents, and this creates cracks. As the kraken invade all order breaks and the people flee, seeking refuge in more honest lands, but holding onto the idea that one day they will return and bring back their city to it former glory.
In Sheffield the brave hearts and relentless workers do what they do best to fend off the encroaching menace, while their military is not the most efficient it is the everyday citizen who take to the line of defense and it works. There are causalities, these everyday people do not have the training needed or weapons available, but they have something more, they have courage and kindness. People move to this accepting city after the chaos, hoping to make a new life there. For now, they are safe.
Nothing can be done to save those on the coasts who are not protected under the gaze of a city, as citizens flee to their last remaining bastion of hope, the one city strong enough to hold onto the future and save them from what climbs forth from the oceans....
Swindon is the last line of defense and chosen as the Environment Minister. The kraken spawn are met with impenetrable force of the Swindon Army, a might which has not been seen since the days of old, they are strong, they are ruthless and they are efficient. The spawn are fully eliminated and did not stand a chance. There are few concerns after the first wave of attacks are over. When the next round comes, they may struggle to afford to defend their people from it, their wealth and the public morality somewhat fading, but it should be enough with their powerful army... hopefully. While the future of Swindon certainly ensures its people's safety, it is unknown how else it will fare....
The Kraken Awakes.
Karen Wake.
Well that was very cool! Enjoyed the game a lot! Congratulations to Swindon

THESE HANDS OF OURS ARE BURNING RED.
THEIR LOUD ROAR TELL US TO GRASP VICTORY!
I'm interested to see how much we as players took over the game with our in-character narrations. It feels obvious from a base level that there might have been more of an effect than originally planned, but one of the signs of a good game is a willingness to change some things on the fly to accommodate the players.
The ending came out of nowhere which was really fun, but maybe a bit irksome because it seemed to favor just the one stat (military). Which I guess is a problem since we'd spent the other days trying to up other stats only to have military really be the only stat that mattered, but that's more just a personal nitpick than anything.
Like I said, it was really fun to play. Edinburgh chat was thinking of ways to secede from like day 1.

At that point I had loads of fun. My favorite parts (obviously) were crafting the campaign speeches and getting rewarded points for them. I just wish I wasn't so sick so I could have spent more time on them. If I could have, I would have had paragraphs.
If there was a next time you'd all be attacked by plants.
- I way underestimated how much of a narrative role people would take, and if I'd realised I would have made the results more 'responsive' like I tried to do in the last two rounds. I can also get how that must have been frustrating to not have had that responded to.
- I should have also made clearer what the end goal stats were, I hoped it'd be clear via hints but I think I dropped the ball there.
- I underestimated how time consuming this would be.
- There could have done with an overall goal that needed teamwork from the beginning, but I didn't think I could manage that too.
- I also wish I could have stimulated more trades and steals from the beginning.
Hindsight eh!
You think you can pay off a kraken? They got no use for your money. This ain't no Loch Ness Monster
