I've been playing Shogun 2, more specifically with the Sekigahara mod, and while it's always been FOTS which is my favorite, it's making me appreciate Warhammer more. Sekigahara is close to vanilla.
I've said it before but the switch from the sync kills back to individual animations was probably one of the best decisions they made. It looks so WEIRD when you have people run away from a charge and a line of troops stand in place because the system decided "These are affected by the charge" rather than poor bastards that were slower than their friends.
I'm missing the comparison numbers that the stats give and being able to click on a unit to have their stat bloc stay up instead of keeping my mouse on them.
I like how warhammer units are smart enough not to friendly fire at the back of another unit.
I like how warhammer ranged units fire all at once, although I actually liked how in FOTS stretching your linemen out was how you got efficient firing.
I kind of miss the formations from S2 though.
I'm kind of seeing people's complaints with unit variety now. Like, basically once you build a samurai dojo, you've gone through the entire tier of infantry. I do like how the different units are more differentiable in their roles than just a model swap though. Not that Warhammer has that problem, though I don't reallt know why spearmen withour shields exist. Maybe those should be replaced with Tilean style pikemen.
Them getting rid of the dumb nebulous aptitude system or whatever it was was also a great idea. I had a general idea what the Medieval 2 system did. What the hell is "Cunning"? The new straight forward system is much better.
I'm glad that your dudes can earn more traits in Warhammer, and the 6 retainers are much better than a random selection of 3. Equipment is also rad, though it's also based on a tabletop wargame so "Sword of Smiting" makes sense for Warhammer in a way that giving your general "Katana of the Minamoto" wouldn't be.
I still miss visible upgrades to armor and weapons from Medieval 2. I wouldn't need that neat mod that makes Empire soldiers more armored if I could have a blacksmith give my naked handgunners or swordsmen more armor.
The point is, with the improvements Warhammer made (though I still prefer the old region system with separate roads, farms, resource buildings, docks, and the growth system), and the current speculation that the new Historical Total War is a tossup between Mongols Total War with Ghengis or Victoria Total War (The former more likely), I'm very excited. I would love to go back to Asia or even have the map stretch from Asia to Europe. China Total War might not be possible though I would love that too.
Kind of hard to draw comparisons considering that the Vortex is in the middle of Ulthuan (which in turn is in the middle of the great ocean, but the atlantic has no central atlantic landmass even comparable to Ulthuan. I mean. Ulthuan is the size of the Empire itself.
Ulthuan is Atlantis, isn't it? It doesn't seem even slightly subtle to me.
The most interesting comment to me was the one about "dividing the world into three parts".
Calling it right now; the second big expansion is going to focus on the east, with Chaos Dwarves, Ogre Kingdoms, Kingdoms of Ind and Great Empire of Cathay as the major factions. Sure, all those factions are less defined than those already present, but I'm pretty sure the devs have the money to hire a few concept artists to flesh out their armies. Bring on the elefant cavalry, serpentine dragons, tiger-men and jade lions!
I'd be surprised that they'd hinge the third game on three factions that don't have much of a presence in the board game itself (as cool as that'd be).
I appreciate theres quite a bit of lore but only ogre kingdoms is an actual army.
I'm thinking of game three being all about chaos daemons?
What we know about game 3 is essentially that it will have four factions, they want every major faction playable in some fashion with the three games, and (possibly outdated) data mining suggested it would be chaos themed. It should also add more to the overall world.
It seems they're going to run out of fully fledged tabletop factions almost immediately if they use the same amount of factions as dlc.
I wonder if they'll use more the alternative faction leaders/sub factions as the dlc.

Even if we can't get to the east, it would be rad if Nippon, Ind, and Cathay had competing colonies in either or the Southlands, Lustria, and Naggaroth.
I think we'll probably see Araby in game 2 though, because according to the Lore they've got a decent presence as corsairs and merchants in the Southlands. Cathay and Araby also warred for Southlands spice trade so that would be a cool angle for CA to take to introduce an eastern kingdom.
Although if they are going to mention them at one point, I wish they would change the names of Nippon and Araby to something not so close to their real counterparts. Brettonia and Cathay kind of skate by being too close to their historical influences, although Brettonia being a mix of Medieval England, France, and having the root of its name be close to Brittany, where the King Arthur stories spread from England, is neat. Cathay is fine because it's the older name for China and I get it's fantasy China.
Nippon is what Japanese people actually call their country though, and Araby breaks down for me when you called its people "Arabians". They should be differentiated more from their real world name. It would be like if you're reading ASOIAF and Valeria was literally named "Rome". Takes you out of it.
Maybe they could be renamed "Wāppon" and "Aliad", Aliad after an old city a tomb king destroyed.

Ahh, I guess I'm just unsure how they would integrate Tomb Kings with the others in their Race for the Vortex. But I mentally put the Vortex in the Golf of Mexico, when I guess its more placed in the middle of the Atlantic?
Mappe.
edit - uglier mappe because hotlinking bad
Uluthan's the goofy donut continent, the Vortex is right in the middle of the circular sea.
Southlands are a fairly hefty region even if you cut out Araby and the Deadlands, so those regions might be saved for later. The 2nd game would be covering a huge amount of territory compared to the first, I wonder if it'll be abstracted somewhat. Or if there's just lots more undeveloped regions.
It will probably be abstracted more, sort of like how the mini-campaigns magnify areas that are fairly small on the Grand Campaign into huge and varied areas.
Good to hear that it's just a rat. I was worried it would be Skaven
Now I'm torn between my desire to see the skaven and my desire to see the internet shitfest that would result if it turns out that Skaven are a day 1 DLC or not even available at all.
Skaven are my favorite race....but the shitfest would be of epic proportions. Apocalyptic proportions. Grimdark proportions.
"Meanwhile a fourth, secretive race stirs, their motives obscured by sinister plots and machinations. The time for revelation is nigh… Introducing Armies of Tzeentch!"
I would still be pleased. Alternatively if it was just Tomb Kings I would still probably be pleased and hope they might decide to do Undead Legion as a pre-order bonus type thing. Really I just want an excuse to have a big stompy Nagash rampaging through enemies and slinging spells.
I wonder what the Dark Elves want with the Vortex. They're not Chaos worshipers right?
They have a bunch of dealings with Slaneesh, so I think they are in the classic camp of "I'll use these demons for my own ends, there's no way this could backfire".

Plus Malkieth thinks he's totally a badass enough mage to remake the Vortex once he's done with all his evil plans for it. Nevermind the guy who made it in the first place is forever stuck in the middle of it.

I thought it was more a matter of he was doing it because his Mom told him to.
And she wants it for Eternal youth and unlimited power I'm guessing.

I think it's more likely we'll see Kislev or Dogs of War
Currently it looks like
TWW1:
Empire
Dwarfs
Greenskins
Vampire Counts
TWW1 DLC:
Warriors of Chaos
Beastmen
Wood Elves
Bretonnia
TWW2:
High Elves
Dark Elves
Lizardmen
Skaven
TWW2 DLC:
Tomb Kings???
TWW3:
Daemons of Chaos
Ogre Kingdoms
Chaos Dwarfs
???

Do they know that Karl Franz is not real?
