No water entering my washing machine

legallytiredlegallytired Registered User regular
I've got a brand new washing machine.
The water valves are old as hell but water does come out of the tubes when I unplug them and turn on the valves.
But when I start the washing machine whether it's cold or hot water it just spins by itself and no water comes in.

Seems rather straightforward so I'm wondering if I'm missing something?

Could be something faulty on the machine's timer not opening a solenoid valve to let the water in or the valve itself.

Edit: Or maybe a water level sensor of some sort sending a bad signal.

yeah outside of a washing machine glitch i can't think of what it would be

like maybe air in the line or something (I don't know) but i don't think that would matter very much

did your washing machine come with a manual

    does it suggest anything

No error message displays on the machine which seems weird. Guess I'll get the repairman to look at it at the same time as the oven that gives an error message (also brand new). The appliances from hell.

It's the first time I plug one in and was wondering if I made a rookie mistake or something. Thanks guys!

Is there anything blocking the water at the connection point on the washing machine itself? Maybe a plug or something that's there during shipping to prevent crap from getting in?

Probably a dumb question, but did you remember to open the valves again after you hooked it up?

Not related to your problem, but I can think of one rookie mistake I feel I should warn you about.

Drain hoses. I've seen some that are flared on one end and are basically friction fit into the drain hole. Don't use those...I've had one spontaneously pop loose and flood the wash room and kitchen. Ideally you want one that has a plastic piece at the end of the hose that forms a "U" so it can't flop around, and zip tie that to one of the supply hoses.

Is there a plug in the intake of the washing machine? I believe my machine had some kind of plug inside where the hose connected that needed to be removed.

Edit: As a side note, I'd recommend getting metal hoses. The rubber ones wear out quickly and the worst thing that can happen is to come home to a flooded house.

Turns out it's an electrical issue with the machine.
We're using metal hoses. Will make sure to check for any leaks on the first wash to avoid drowning my downstairs neighbor.
