Fate also had nearly 0 cards for standard. The only ones I can remember are that green one drop, the red siege, and Brimaz

Fate had Tasigur, Ugin, Valorous Stance, Arashin Cleric, Silumgar, Crux, Heelcutter, Kolaghan, Mastery of the Unseen, Monastery Mentor/Soulfire, Temur Battle Rage, Wild Slash, Whisperwood... it definitely made its impact on Standard
drafting it was hot garbage though, especially after triple Khans
Whoops, I dun got mixed up.
Fate sucked though, yeah.

Hopefully the shop we're going to won't mind if I'm just hanging around watching.
EDIT: Oh, wait. This format looks very simple. Maybe I will play after all.

"Disappointing" is the nicest word I have on hand at the moment.

He is a shit piece
the mechanical representation of an earworm-song
your creatures are all
"...hey, I just met you... and this is cray-zy..."
Shouldn't it be an ETB effect instead of on cast?
I was debating this, and I mostly thought... well, I mostly thought "fuck counterspells", but also that investing four specific colored mana on an enchantment is a pretty big deal in anything but commander, so you should get some value out of it even if it gets countered. And also to just sidestep any flicker abuse for infinite +1/+0 anthems.
No way in hell that costs RRWW

I'm late to the party, but:
When fucking Theros is less bland, uninspired and not interesting, you really fucked up. I understand the need for lower-power sets, but BFZ is also boring. That's unacceptable, and is 100% the fault of design. Also, this WOTC idea of writing characters with focus groups is awful.
I mean, as a theme, "adventure into the ever-shifting unknown wilds" is good, and you can tell good stories from that. But then they had the bright idea of the fucking Eldrazi.

eldrazi zendikar is a complete nothing of a setting
Steam | Twitter
but I liked the distilled, general idea I get of the plane that first time around just thumbin through cards. I liked the eldrazi turn, too, until it was everywhere, though it sucks that it was at the expense of a cool plane people liked
Instead of trying to cram in some sort of universe ending threat that can be only be dealt with by the planeswalking power rangers.
it just has the misfortune of being linked so closely to the wet fart that was battle for zendikar

I'm not going to say they should never do it, because that would be silly
but it should be very rare, so that when it does happen it carries enormous weight
also I am sad about Mirrodin, it was the plane of my childhood, along with Kamigawa
and now it is not there anymore
at least Kamigawa is safe
since they're never going back there
B-b-b-but Disney! Marvel! The Avengers! Money!
This is pretty much the biggest issue.
They want to print Planeswalker cards since they're super popular and always mythic, which means they need to find an excuse for at least five planeswalkers to be involved in a story line in every block.
Especially....I mean shit, they're going into a block that they want to keep low power. Why not tell a story that is some regional conflict that is interesting and is more low stakes.
Going "okay guys, we need to low ball the power in this set. Let's see what we can come up with" and then ending up with "tons of eldrazi, wide reaching end of the world events, cats and dogs etc etc" seems totally backwards.
Go back to Jamuraa, then you have a great mix of nations, nomadic tribes, wizards and a great setting that can match what you're looking to do at the right power level. Get some real characters in there that you can print as legendary cards. Skip planeswalkers in the first set and then have them arrive in second, or someone become a planeswalker.
They need to hire some writers that can produce an interesting story and not be shackled by the need to stick a bunch of planeswalkers in everything.
Going to a two set block format seems to have exacerbated the problem.
Edit: They could never do justice to Mirage block art though.
But I hate what they have done to the story and the effect that has on what other cards can appear in a set.
when you don't actually have to tell a story, big threats like the eldrazi and the phyrexians can be these cool abstract horrors that exist as something thematic, as a pulse in the background
when you have to actually narrate what's going on with them? you have the stories where superman fights doomsday. so you've got this character who is pretty one-note and simple like doomsday, and because he is so one-note and simple, all the story you tell with superman is "superman punches him" which is the opposite of good superman storytelling. the eldrazi are a story that magic both wanted to wrap up because you can't do much with it, but ALSO it's the worst possible story to debut their new character-focused storytelling with, because you have very little character work that can happen
but over the past few years they've also made a conscious effort to make a lot more smaller planeswalker villains, which is good because you can use people like Vraska or Ob Nixilis to tell much smaller-scale stories with actual character development, so on one hand i'm optimistic for the future
on the other hand? there's a very real chance we run into scale problems again when we return to the phyrexian story.
the eldrazi titans were basically kaiju
