It also sounds like the game is more than a little buggy, but keep in mind this guy is playing it before the day 1 patch hits the servers so anything could change, even his "exploit" could just be a shortcut the devs had in the game for themselves
What I know is that video of him running around a planet looked super fun and I would love to play a game where I do that a bunch and just go down the tech tree
I for one am outraged that they didn't individually craft each of the 18 quintillion planets with unique life forms
How hard is it to do your job game developers really
well, if you're in the game for the exploration and discovery and you can pick up the pattern after a handful of planets, I think that'd be kind of a letdown

15 animals seems like a very very low number for a game specifically about the wonder of exploration
it must be hard to be a developer who makes a space game, because your audience is insane
I can't stop looking at the subreddit and I really really should
There are some people that are really really handling it poorly that their 3 year long fantasy has turned out to be a regular pretty cool video game with techincal limitations and design flaws
For nearly a decade she found it hard to get genuinely excited about video games because of it
Stardew Valley thankfully turned it around for her, now she talks about it incessantly but honestly I enjoy hearing all the enthusiasm after hearing her be such a downer for such a long time

Considering animals, like everything else, are procedurally generated, I could see there being 15 unique "base forms" with literally millions of significantly unique permutations. You know, like Avian, Ungulate, Insectoid, Reptillian, Amphibious, Primate, etc.

That is the case
The 15 is stuff like "walks around on 4 legs" or "flies around" or "is a fish"
And we've seen the base of quadruped vary from something that resembles a goat to stuff that looks more like a turtle, so it can be pretty different
One of the other things the guy who beat the game said is that he never once had a feeling of "oh, this again" when he landed on a new planet, everywhere he went felt different and new
Polygon has been putting up articles summarizing the leaks, intending to deflate the game's hype and talking like the guy didn't like the game (not the case, he just has issues with it, but that's besides the point)
My Collector's Editor of Spore is basically a reminder I have on my shelf to not get too overhyped about games.
I should make myself a "temper expectations" shelf, with Spore, Warhammer Online, Brink and Master of Orion 3 on it.
The free play up to level 12 and lack of any expansions killed WAR. You could either roll free characters for constant lvl 12 pvp or grind flipping end game cities, but up to then man I loved that game.

All of this still sounds rad rad rad

My Steam
Star Citizen is the one that broke the seal
Now all space games are controlled by an audience of absolute madmen

Incidentally, this is why I've cooled significantly on JRPGs as I've gotten older
And I just want to take those people aside and have a cautionary word
I can't stop looking at the subreddit and I really really should

Yeah that game already came out and was called "Spore"
Only for the creature creator

Looks like it's all just based on time, number of things scanned, collected, etc. Not very surprising considering how vast the game is.
Early versions of that game looked SO GOOD!
And then when it came out everything was super bare bones and the only in depth stage, space, was a boring, micro-management filled mess.
These are also almost identical to the game's in-game medal system, so it'll be really easy to track how close you are to getting the trophies
I assume the Steam achievements will be the same
it is a nice box tho

I mean I guess they could still do it this week, but still

I can't even think of 15 super distinct animal frames to build stuff on in real life!
I get to about 2 and then think "omg spider" and have to stop before I crap myself
Anything with less than 0 legs is real, but non-corporeal.
EDIT: To be clear: wings, fins, arms, etc, don't count as legs. So birds and humans are the same thing. Fish and worms are the same thing.
I'm a scientist and that all adds up
Regardless look at this Metal Slug Snail
I know this!
they have one foot
Like, is a circle a polygon with one side? Or infinite sides?
The snail is the circle of the animal world.

And then they just put up this weird-ass video inflating it back up again
It's a strange tone from them now
DSP was the one to get the leak? That's pretty impressive.
Also has this been confirmed to run at 60FPS on PS4? I swear Google/Reddit is a fucking mess for this game right now.
I hope it's a good videogame
