[Elite: Dangerous] Get a ship, get a crew and keep flying. Now with ALIENS.

From the Empire,
CMDR Salomé, formerly the disgraced Senator Kahina Tijani Loren, is wanted by the Empire.
She is accused of terrorism and is a convicted criminal, found guilty of the attempted assassination of Fleet Admiral Denton Patreus.
Her co-conspirators; CMDRs Raan Corsen, Tsu Singh and Yuri Nakamura are also wanted for aiding and abetting her in her plans to destabilise the galaxy.
So far they have evaded justice and remain at large. Intelligence reports indicate that they will be attempting to reach an unconfirmed destination in the heart of the core worlds (the bubble) for reasons unknown aided by disaffected factions and other malcontents.
A bounty of 5 Million credits is offered for Salomé’s death. 2 Million credits is offered, apiece, on receipt of similar proof of her conspirators’ demise.
Consider all of them armed and extremely dangerous.
They, and those helping them, have been sighted in and around the Col 70 Sector, in the vicinity of the 46 Eridani system.
Do not engage in communications. Show no mercy. Kill them all on sight.
I'll probably multicrew it up to check it out.
Here's hoping they get to reveal the big conspiracy. Even if they don't there are contingencies so players can still reveal the truth.

If one of you is established enough to have a multiperson ship, then the other can join in right away. But if you're both in starting sidewinders you'll just have to wing up together instead. This isn't a bad thing, really, since flying is integral to everything you do in Elite.
Yeah, to multicrew your ship has to have an extra seat. But not to worry, because the first ship to have that is the Adder and it's only about 87k. Also, you will need turreted weapons if you want your buddy to be able to be a gunner for you. From what I've seen everyone say, Elite is the best VR game out there. So you should have great fun regardless.
Oh, this page has a chart with multicrew capable ships (scroll down a bit)
edit- Oh and the cliff notes version of the big conspiracy is this;
Feds and Imps (and Alliance no doubt) are aware of the impending alien threat. Both sides have been more or less faking the Cold War so no one would question why they were building up their militaries.
They also launched a backup plan to scout and locate earth-like worlds far, far away from the bubble to be used in an emergency. Most everyone involved was killed to keep the secret.
Worth noting that Feds & Imps fought and defeated the Thargoids a couple hundred years earlier by using a virus that nearly wiped out the Thargoid species if not for the Alliance's aid. However much of that war has been purposely censored and forgotten to the point that as far as the vast majority of humanity is concerned the Thargoids are a fairy tale..

So I finally seem to be getting the most basics of basics down. I realized the resource extraction zone I was in was way to high level for the noob ship and a noob pilot. Found a lower level resource point in the same system, tagged a kill (by hopping on when the security forces wrecked a wanted ship). Then I managed to jump to a gateway station, dock and all that. I still don;t have a good feel for certain things...
Like you can lock a location to for super cruise, but there doesn't seem to be a control to re-highlight it if you scan a ship or something. Its still locked in the computer but you lose the speed/distance guide reading on the left? Is there command to quickly pull up the nav targets.
I'm also having issue figuring out when to dump speed to drop out of frame shift. I keep reading to drop speed when you have 7 seconds left but I seem to be missing it. Eventually you need to drop the remaing speed to get slow enough to drop out and it that last part I'm missing?
Also I was going to start hopping to the system everyone's in but the range on the noob ship is terrible bad. Do I need to just upgrade to a better ship first or should I plan on making a zillion hops? Do I need a fuel scoop or are there enough stations to get there?

You probably want a fuel scoop. Making sure every system on the way to your destination has a station in it is a pretty big task, and I'm super lazy so I wouldn't bother. As for whether you should upgrade or do a bunch of small hops, it's up to you. I did a lot of small hops when I first started and it honestly wasn't such a bad way to do things. Kinda time consuming, yeah, dropping into and then out of warp, scooping fuel, then making another jump, but once I got to where I was going (some community event thing) I ended up making a LOT more money than I would have if I'd stayed where I originally was. You could perhaps see about upgrading your FSD to increase your jump range if you don't want to make as many small hops, but also don't want to wait to save up enough for an entirely new ship. Maybe drop or change some other of your ship's innards to lighten the load so you can jump farther as well.
First you want a fuel scoop and the knowledge to look for KGB-FOAM stars when your fuel tank starts getting low. Refueling at stations is a HUGE waste of your time when you're traveling from point A to point B
Once you have a few hundred thousand to 1.3 million credits you want a hyperspace taxi because manually re-positioning most combat oriented vessels is a pain.
The cheapest is an unarmed/unshielded D-rated Hauler outfitted with the best possible FSD, either a D or A rated powerplant, and the largest fuel scoop that you can afford. You can reach 30+ LY jumps on a budget easy with this. Eventually the Diamondback Explorerer will outperform it.
^That build's a functional hyperspace taxi with a 32.4 LY jump range on a budget of 256k credits.
Upgrade priority would be an A rated powerplant for improved heat efficiency when fuelscooping, and then either a 3A fuelscoop for the faster scooping times or an advanced discovery scanner to siphon some cash from your trips by honking the scanner while your FSD spins up.
The 7 second thing you keep reading about is the "Zenoglide" approach to approaching stations. Basically you toy with your throttle until it hits the 7 second ETA mark and then keep adjusting it up and down so that it's always 7 seconds until you arrive. It works but it's far from the fastest way to approach a station. You can arrive at stations much faster if you cut your throttle back at the last few moments and then performing some rolls to position yourself on an approach vector that skims close to the host planet to suddenly gravity brake yourself to safe drop speeds right in front of the mailslot.
I had a lot of fun bounty hunting in the cobra. I haven't really flown it much since I got Horizons. Face tanking a clipper edge on and turning 90 degrees so their hardpoints can't hit you is always satisfying.
So I bought this waaaaay back in the day (two years ago?) and haven't really done anything past the first twenty minutes where I couldn't find anything to do. I just picked up the expansion because all this crazy stuff going on looks super fun (and I'm reading the Culture series right now so everything sci-fi is interesting). What should I do to get started in this?

I love the Cobra but I find it impossible not to do this while flying it.
So quickly looking on the net, Salome was killed by a PVP group SDC that participated as her defense then turned on her.
Commander: Harry Potter. Bagged the kill.
Yeah from what I understand that group are out and proud trolls of the highest order. So the whole thing ended up being very The Scorpion and the Frog.
Still though I did expect her to die, just kind of 'ugh' on the how. At any rate the message got out and who knows what will happen next.
Heh, knowing the conspiracy now I'm kind of leaning more towards, "Eh, probably not a bad idea actually".
A Capellan's favorite sheath for any blade is your back.
Calling the Smiling Dog Crew a PvP group is really stretching it, they are known exploit users (yes, I've seen this myself) and possible cheaters and the fact that Drew Wagar or whatever his name is willingly associated himself and his story with that bunch of misfits makes me want to have nothing to do with it. As for cmdr Harry Potter, I always make it a point to chain-interdict him on the rare occasion our paths cross, so at least he can provide some amusement :P
Anyway, it seems that this little happening has brought out a lot of anger and drama in the E:D community. I've never played Eve, but from what I've read about the intrigues and underhanded stuff that takes place there, it kinda reminds me a bit of that game. Thankfully, the galaxy in the E:D is large enough that you don't have to take part in those kinds of things unless you want to.
I actually think that plot twist is pretty interesting. The idea of two giant superpowers faking a cold war when they're really working together against an alien threat is something I've never seen before.
Yeah, the actual story may be pretty interesting I suppose... if it's true! After all, would you trust a known terrorist such as the late senator? :P
It's kinda interesting watching how much interest this event got from the the community though. For better or worse, it seems lots of players are interested in large scale coordinated events/fleets. To bad the game is ill equiped to handle that kind of thing, both due to the lack of tools to manage groups and things of that matter, and due to the technical nature of a purely peer-to-peer network architecture. Even though many people seem to wish otherwise, E:D is a multiplayer game, not a true MMO.
I read Reclaimation and still couldn't bring myself to care about Salome, one way or the other. So I can sit here and be bemused that anyone was fool enough to trust SDC.
The real question for me is whether to fly in MobiusPVE or Axen Moon.
So I bought this waaaaay back in the day (two years ago?) and haven't really done anything past the first twenty minutes where I couldn't find anything to do. Just remember there's no set story or campaign. Elite is about doing your own thing in your own spaceship.
Tips for new pilots!
Do the training missions.
Don't worry too much about the Advanced Combat one, it's hard.
Then do some of the challenge scenarios.
These are a fantastic resource, as they let you try things out with no risk.
For example: Docking and Travel Training. Feel free to fly around the station before leaving. You have 5 minutes before the station revokes your right to be there. Check the place out! Maybe run the timer all the way out, to see what happens?
When you do get to the next system, fly right into the star! Learn how to deal with it now, when there's nothing on the line.
Yeah, the whole Salome thing got pretty ridiculous. I didn't directly take part because of the drama. I'm a part of the EDF, which is somewhat well known as one of the more established Fed groups. The people taking control of this event (PAC), made some serious mistakes. First, they edged us out (like, banning our leadership from discord when we started making PvP defense wings and such). Second, they pissed off independent pilots by trying to make them follow their "rules" and "try out" to be part of the event. Third, they trusted SDC. But, and here's some armchair psychology for you- they came at it from the wrong direction. Knowing them a bit, they were scared to fight SDC. So they thought they'd try to cloak and dagger their way out of it by making SDC an ally.
Classic mistake when dealing with people. Always have what they want at the forefront of your mind. SDC wants to be infamous (Harry especially) and cause people to get upset. They aren't going to fall for anything that's counter to that desire. They are actually fairly decent guys roleplaying terrorists in the game, and many of them are pretty sharp.
Anyway, so instead of Adles Armada (most established Fed PvP Faction that can hang with SDC) having full control of PvP protection, PAC tried this goofy mess. Predictable results.
EDF protected our charge (Raan Corsen) and the other VIPs made it through, so the plot will move forward. Overall, I'm happy. Silk (leader of Adles Armada) really should have told his people to kill Harry when they were several jumps out from the last dock. But Silk isn't the double crossing type.
So going into the mapping file o noticed the xml is pretty different on the generated one then the ones I can download
I spent some time converting it over and I think I have things working. It also didn't like the device being named ds4 instead of gamepad
I got it working but some stuff feels off so I'll probably customize. I think I'd like pitch and roll on the right and yaw on the left. Probably add thruster axis to the same stick as yaw and free up the shoulders for customization once I get playing. Also need inverted
So is there an auto docking procedure or is it something I'll get better at? In VR it was a blast because it was all do immersive but for actual game play it seems like it'd get old to struggle to dock after a bit.
But man kudos on the look contextual menu panels. Even just requesting docking access felt awesome in VR.
I dunno how into the game I can get cause VR exhausts me pretty quick but she fat pretty dames fun

You'll get better at it in time.
Also you can get a docking computer that'll do the whole thing for you. Though it takes up an optional internal slot.
I use it cause it gives me a nice break to grab a snack or something to drink.

who has two thumbs and turned in probably 25 million in bounties over 3 days before he actually signed up for the community goal
Played some more. My buddy is getting a bit frustrated and while I see where he's coming from its gotta be the best vr experience out there so I'm willing to ignore the learning curve.
Anyone have some combat tips? Like I am a complete rookie when it comes to flight and space sims. I'm usually a decent fps player but I doubt that translates. I'm not even sure what I should be doing to get behind enemies. Or to shake them.
The advanced tutorial is kicking my butt. I can't help it think some of it is controller mapping and not having am everything easily available to me. Like I have throttle on left stick which feels good but I think is hindering me in combat.
Would I want to use thrusters when I turn? What's the quickest way to turn and related what's the quickest way to do a 180? Can I do a 180 and shoot backwards while maintaining speed? I know nothing about flying in these games
The tutorials actually put up far more of a challenge than 90% of the game. You're never going to see any stealthing missions like the one in the tutorials either. Once you're familiar with the basic controls, then head on into the main game.
Your throttle has a section highlighted in blue. Mobility is highest when your throttle is within that band.
The quickest way to turn around would be to disable flight assist, use a boost to speed up your turn, and then re-enable flight assist. That will let you do starbuck style flip where you finish the maneuver flying backwards. For that matter, if you have an advantage in firepower and shields, you can defeat a lot of the AI by just forgetting about flying forwards and just flying backwards while maintaining guns on target.

Yeah, I was reading about this mess today (Ars Technica has a great article about it) and this is 100% PAC's fault. Every single thing they did was as stupid as possible and inviting SDC in is easily the most moronic thing I've ever heard of. The whole thing reads like the idiotic version of the GHSC raid on Ubiqua Seraph.
I played Eve for six years and the community relations and OpSec on this was just offensively bad.
More and more glad I never see other players, reading about things like this. No tolerance for people who play to make others angry, "roleplaying" as an excuse or not.
Seems most likely to me that the whole thing was staged as a publicity stunt for the book if you ask me... there are rumours going around that Frontier themselves tried to convince Wagar not to go through with it after the bad behaviour of PAC and company, and the resulting negative feelings of the rest of playerbase interested in taking part. If I was in charge at Frontier, I think I'd distance myself and the story-line of the game from this whole mess. On the other hand, all PR is good PR right? Here is the article TOGsolid mentioned:
@dporowski to be fair, the vast majority of player interactions in open are not like this at all. Even at CGs and other hotspots most cmdrs are civil enough.
Yeah, I'm sure it's unfair of me. Even back when I checked out EVE, which is... EVE, you'd see decent normal people. I just don't want anything to do with anything even adjacent to it. I don't consider "just a game" or "roleplaying" an excuse to be a goose to someone who hasn't explicitly opted into that kind of roleplay, and if the only way I can affect that is not to play with them? Well, then they can hear a bunch of "I don't want to play with you."
@Disrupter
Pip management is also crucial. 4 pips in engines, you'll turn faster. 4 pips in systems, your shields are tougher. 4 pips in weapons, your guns can fire longer.
Skip the Advanced Combat for now. If you're not having fun, do something else.
Don't fall into the trap of thinking you have to be doing one specific thing. It's a chill game to relax in and follow your nose.
Played some more. My buddy is getting a bit frustrated and while I see where he's coming from its gotta be the best vr experience out there so I'm willing to ignore the learning curve.

I think Vindicator Jones has a good primer on general combat:
He has several short videos on the subject that are worth checking out. About the advanced tutorial- don't sweat that one. It's meant to be a hard mode challenge for experienced pilots to use for training. Feel free to skip it. I don't think I've ever done it, and I'm primarily a combat pilot.
Typically when fighting, you want to keep your speed in the "blue zone". With flight assist: ON, you just set your thruster there 90% of the time and you should be good to go. There's a lot of moving parts in this game, so a general tutorial for everything is a bit hard. So far as your question, Flight Assist: ON (FA:ON) will generally mimick an airplane. You can fly backwards though, just at half speed. FA:OFF is a different beast. The ship will no longer attempt to fly like an airplane. It's a full 6 degrees of freedom and you're free (and encouraged) to fly in one direction with your nose pointing in a different vector. The easiest application of this is the boost turn described above, and in general it's pretty good for strafe runs.
If you're really interested in mastering FA: OFF, I can dig up the tutorial videos I used to learn. But I would say at this point to just master FA: ON.
Yeah, I'm sure it's unfair of me. Even back when I checked out EVE, which is... EVE, you'd see decent normal people. I just don't want anything to do with anything even adjacent to it. Haha, I don't think anyone needs to make excuses for playing the game any way they find most enjoyable, the solo and group modes are there to be used if that's your thing. My point was that even in open, gankers and drama is only a very small part of the overall experience, even though they get lots of attention. The E:D galaxy/bubble is large enough that it is easy to avoid it completely. I fully agree with you that acting like a dick in game raises some serious red flags about what kind of person you are in real life as well, although everyone would do well to remember that it is just a game after all...
Reading this thread on the forum, and doing a bit of snooping on reddit and elsewhere, it seems to me that this publicity stunt has backfired in a way Frontier can't be very happy with... oh well, it's interesting to watch it from an outside perspective at least!

Gamepad options all still had keyboard bindings got the tutorial and downloaded bindings seemed to leave everything unbound according to my game
I'm a flight and Space sim complete novice so I have zero idea what the controls even mean let alone how they should be mapped

But at least I have a starting point now
But man kudos on the look contextual menu panels. Even just requesting docking access felt awesome in VR.
I dunno how into the game I can get cause VR exhausts me pretty quick but she fat pretty dames fun
Also you can get a docking computer that'll do the whole thing for you. Though it takes up an optional internal slot.
I use it cause it gives me a nice break to grab a snack or something to drink.

Oh man.
Still, 25 million is 25 million.

@dporowski to be fair, the vast majority of player interactions in open are not like this at all. Even at CGs and other hotspots most cmdrs are civil enough.
