    Well moppets are homicidal so.

It's what I took to calling the up-jumped dishwashers we were calling cooks because of how bad the hiring situation got.

Basically old bitch was so crazy that she had driven off almost every decent cook in town, and they warned anyone else off. So at the end of it we were hiring people who had recently been sandwich "artisans" and having me try to drill the principals of being a cook into them as fast as possible.

It worked about as well as you could imagine. I can teach people a lot of things about a kitchen, but I can't teach them passion and work ethic.

Hey, could chat help me with something before I bed? I'm looking at this to help me better understand the math for ANN backpropagation. It has been a LONG TIME since I took calculus, so I forget how exactly to apply the chain rule, but have been relearning (I think I'm going to have to implement an automatic differentiator to do some of this, but anyway). About halfway down the page, after
This says that the derivative of g(x) is simply the output of g(x) times 1 - the output of g(x)

    Much simpler right?

Okay, so now let's differentiate our cost function. We have to use the chain rule

is some math. I am having trouble following the bottom. It goes from 2u to u*u' without explanation (the 2 is canceled by the term outside of the sum). Am I correct in my belief that the author just forgot the u' in the first bit, and it should read 2u*u'? That makes sense to me, as it starts as f(g(x)) where f is squaring and g(x) is u, so chain rule application should be f'(u) = 2u and u' = u', so we get 2u*u', but I am not a hundred percent confident and want to be sure I'm grasping this right.

To put in perspective how much talent she drove off, the second chef we had there (before my time, but I had met the guy several times) has earned a Michelin star in the south of France.

Most of the rest either own their own places or are the chefs of successful places all over town and outside of it.

So realistically putting me in the position was basically tasking me with keeping the place from sliding to complete shit before it changed hands. I really can't stress how happy I am to be out from under that.

this is hard to follow as written i think. could you restate the term you're meant to differentiate? is it just 2u? differentiating 2u doesn't require the chain rule.

Some of this shit I used to be scared to post because technically if she found out I'd be fired.

And no, I'm not joking. If she had enough evidence to even tangentially find out I was related to this account and one of you had strolled in with a print-out of even some of the tamer things I had said, I would not have a job. Not because I shared anything important with you, because fuck if I did, but because I made her look bad in any fashion, even to people she may never meet in her life.

u, here, is h(x) - y. The thing we're differentiating is (h(x) -y)2. As written, the page is (taking out all the extraneous terms) saying that we can substitute u for h(x)-y. Then, our initial function is u2, which we are differentiating. u is a function of x, and our broader thing we're taking the derivative of is a function of u (since we have to square it), right? So the derivative should be 2u*u'?
