Isn't that announcement basically "Be sure to drink your Ovaltine"?
In other news I finally hit level 25 so I have a Lucky Egg now and 50+ Pidgeys saved up. Hopefully there is an actual holiday event with extra experience that I can take advantage of.
The new tracker helped me get a Wartortle. I was just sitting at my desk, bored as hell when I launched the game. Lo and behold a Wartortle was at the park near my work.
Unfortunately he was like 400CP so not entirely worth the trip over, but I'll take the 4 Squirtle candies.
So that is how they solve rural america. There is a sprint store, starbucks, corprate something in almost every town in america. I bet McDonalds is close to follow.
Rumors elsewhere say that sound files for Gen 2 pokemon have been added too.
The total kilometers a buddy has walked has been added to the information screen of each Pokemon that has ever been your buddy.
This makes me happy.
3. AVATAR CUSTOMIZATION!
Finally, avatar customization is being expanded! Nothing is visible in the game currently, but under the surface, functionality has been added that will allow travelers to customize their avatars in the following categories:
HAIR
SHIRT
PANTS
HAT
SHOES
EYES
BACKPACK
Code for both in-app purchases and unlockable avatar items is referenced. We believe both may be a possibility soon! Avatar customization items have the following attributes:
NEW
SALE
PURCHASABLE
UNLOCKABLE
It will be interesting to see how to 'unlock' customization items!
The starbucks promotion? Your avitar can dress like a star bucks barista.
Now you can spend a buttload of Dust powering it up and then evolve it into to the worst possible moveset like the rest of us!
Almost the sad truth. Never use dust on something until you know it is worth it. As it doesn't matter when you power up, I never do till after evolution.

How much does this solve tho? I guess they can maybe get pokeballs easier now. Doesn't fix the low spawn density (though cell phone stores do tend to spawn more due to the high cell activity). But I mean, do people really want to hang out at their Sprint store catching Pokemon? I feel like this change doesn't really do anything overall.

Yea but after you leave work you could drive by one. Plus most malls have a Sprint so at least then you could walk the mall and catch Pokémon.
To be honest, at least in my area, spawn levels have gone way up! Which is good .... except for the fact that there are still no pokestops (literally one within walking distance, which is still over a mile), and the ones I can drive to are all on the road ....
It can only be to get more money from people.
Which I guess is a sound decision, save for the fact that people can just quit instead of paying more
Well I mean Pokéstops are user submitted. The problem is that people were submitting bullshit stops so they had to stop the application.
Most of the stops now are from Ingress. I'm lucky that in my area it seems Ingress was pretty popular. Worked out for me.
However this doesn't really absolve them. They are rolling in the money right now and can afford to hire a Pokéstop team and reopen the applications so active rural players can start submitting again to increase their enjoyment.
For what it's worth: there are two stops within walking distance of my house (~1 mi) but I rarely go to them. I drive to parks and walk around to get my stops.
I think I did a bad problem explaining. Xaquin says spawns are up, but there are no pokestops.
You say who wants to go to a sprint store to farm pokemon, is that any better or worse than that one stop 5 miles down a trail in a spider infested forest? That stop was put there most likely because someone in ingress wanted there guardian badge. They put the stop in the worst spot to make it hard to get to.
I think it is total corprate America, but the idea of adding stops to starbucks, McDonalds, Stores that are in a lot of malls, that makes these stops in public places, guranteed. They can make deals with these companies to make money. These companies probably can make promotions off the idea.
Do I think it is ok? Yes, why because it will give a lot of pokestops at guranteed public places were people won't get hurt. I get that people in rural area might not think they are getting anything, but you have to step back and ask. Are they trying? I would say yes, because if you open up just submissions, your going to get a pokestop at that apartment complex so someone can catch pikachu in there underware.
Finally caught a decent growlithe (14/14/15). Evolve to Arcanine, and Firefang/Fireblast! Nearly died. Gyms around me are dominated by Lapras, finally have my counter.
This is a good thing for everyone. I'm still unsure why people are making a big deal about it.
In related news: I woke up this morning and saw a Lapras at the stop near me (~1mi). I threw on some pants and flew over there in my car and caught him. Disrupted my morning routine but totally worth it. He was 2k or so with Frost Breath/Blizzard. Woo!
Yeah, I'll admit turning the pokestop into an ad is cheesy, but it's hard to complain about new pokestops.
just need to do the same for Gas Stations / Convenience Stores

I'm still baffled that McDonald's, which was datamined in like the first patch, still hasn't done this (except I think in Japan of all places). Seems like there are even more McDonald's than Starbucks... Would have made sense

I was curious so I looked it up:
As of May 2014, the United States, with 11,563 locations, had the largest number of Starbucks stores in the world by far.
Of these, there are 14,339 McDonald's restaurants in the U.S.
That's actually a lot closer than I thought.

I figured US numbers would be close but I suspect in international numbers McDonald's absolutely eclipses Starbucks. Starbucks feels like a very US focused thing

In 2014, there were 21,366 Starbucks stores around the world
Worldwide McDonald's stores: 36,525
Still not nearly as many as I thought.

Yeah that's a lot closer than I would have thought. Especially given Starbucks is relatively new while McDonald's has been around forever. You'd think that would have given them more time to establish themselves.
Saw a pidgy and went ahead and decided to try and catch it (hadn't really been catching them lately after going through a spurt of being low on pokeballs), and after I caught it it turned into a ditto.

Edit:
So that's what it was...
Well it could still be the Holiday event. The Halloween event had a TON more Pokemon spawn.
That's pretty cool. I hope that it helps out a lot of the rural players.
In other news I finally hit level 25 so I have a Lucky Egg now and 50+ Pidgeys saved up. Hopefully there is an actual holiday event with extra experience that I can take advantage of.

For whatever reason it's in the patch notes but not in the game. Long press on any pokemon.
