Crazy video/subtitle files

I have an .avi file, that came with a seperate subtitle file. There seems to be 2 subtitle files for each avi, in the .ass extension (I know...). One of the .zips also contained a font file, which I placed into the windows font folder, and it said it installed.

VLC just brings up little squares (and the occasional letter) instead of subtitles, when I direct it to both the video and subtitle files. WMP Classic doesn't even give me subtitle options. I also tried a player i've never heard of, GOM, but that didnt seem to help either (it played the file as if it were a 4 second clip, and still showed up little squares.).

Anyone know more (i.e anything) about this stuff than me?
